San Diego senior Melissa Glazebrook set a new standard at USO as she passed out 120 assists en route to becoming the school's al l-time career assist leader. Junior guard Kerri Nakamoto was automatic from three-point range , completing a stellar junior season ranked fifth na– tionally in three-point shooting accuracy. Forward Erin Malich enjoyed a breakout year as a junior, leading the Toreros in scoring with 14.7 points per game and ranking among the league's best in several key categories , including rebounding and blocked shots.

The San Diego faithful and the Jenny Craig Pavilion wel comed the team's homecoming after the season began with a four-game road trip
that took USO to New York State after games with nationally ran ked Colorado and the University of Denver. The Toreros responded to the warm reception with excell ent play through– out the month of December. Playing seven of eight games in the JCP duri ng the month , USO would reel off seven con– secu tive victories, including a 79-51 drubbing of UCLA. Kerri Nakamoto led a Torero attack that buried a season-hi gh 12 three-poi nters during the rout. On December 30th , the Toreros put their seven game wi n– ning streak on the line against unbeaten and No. 4 Iowa State in the championship game of San Diego's holiday Surf-n– Slam Tournament. USO would play exceptionally well, tak– ing the Cyclones into overtime , before Iowa State won a thri ller 69-67. Seniors Melissa Glazebrook and Robyn Fortney led the way for the Toreros, with Fortney tallying a career– high 20 points. The USO Toreros , who battled team injuries throughout the season , finished with an overa ll record of 13-15 and 4-10 in very competitive West Coast Conference . With the return of frontcourt standouts Erin Malich and Marta Menuez, along with backcourt starter Kerri Nakamoto, the Toreros are opti– mistic they will enjoy success for the 2002-03 campaign .
