The USO Athletic Academic Support program is designed to promote the academic development of student-athletes. The primary objective is to offer the necessary resources for the academic success of student-athletes as they work to earn their degree.Academic Support services are designed to enhance the student-athlete's overall col legiate experience and encourage development and attainment of academic and career goals. The University of San Diego'sAcademic Support efforts are led by Shaney Fink who begins her third year as USD'sAcademic Support Coordinator. Fink was a standout volleybal l player in the 90's, and in 1999 she was on the Volleyball coach ing staff as an assistant, helping the Toreros to a 23-6 record and a second round finish in the NCAA Tournament.Priorto USO she gained coaching experience at the high school,college and international levels for five years. She capped off a stellar colleg iate career (1990-93} at Cal Berkeley and won selection to the All-PAC Ten Decade Team. Fink completed her B.A. , graduating in Social Science from Berkeley in 1994. All USO student athletes have access to advising, tutori ng and mentori ng services.The mentoring program,Access,was developed in 1999 and teams a graduate student inthe Counseling program with an athletewho would like to enhance study skills, learn about campus resou rces and receive guidance on goal development and attain– ment. Student-athletes also have access to a quiet area where they can study or work in the computercenter. Inaddition,student-athletesare encouraged to utilize the campus learning centers including the Writing, Math and Logic Centers as we ll as to take advantage of the resources available to them in the Career Center,Counseling Center and Computer Labs. USO is a member of the NCAACHAMPS/LIFE SKILLS program. This program was created to enhance the total development of student athletes on NCAA Division 1 campuses. The NCAAChamps/Life Skills Mission is: To maintain intercollegiate athletics as an integral part of the campus educational program and the athlete as an integral part of the student body. With this in mind, the CHAMPS Life Skills program was created to support the student development initiatives of its member institutions and to enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience within the university setting.
