Federal Update

Thanks to the many locals who braved the rain to come to my recent Mobile Office at the ‘two little bakers’ cafe in Mudgeeraba (above). With an electorate that stretches out to the Lockyer Valley and takes in Boonah, Beaudesert and some of the Gold Coast Hinterland, I’m very conscious of the need to take my office on the road - to meet directly with residents and stay in touch with what is happening in our communities. I was pleased to announce recent Federal funding for the Vietnam Veterans Social Golf Club Project, to install new plaques on the Vietnam Veterans Social Golf Club Memorial in Mudgeeraba. This is part of our ongoing Saluting their Service commemorations programme, which ensures we remember our servicemen and women well beyond this Anzac Centenary. With the Federal Budget set to be delivered this month, I do encourage anyone who has questions about any aspect of the Budget to give my office a call. I also welcome your feedback at any time. Low official cash rates mean a wealth of opportunity for first home buyers, people who are currently renting and property investors, says First National Real Estate Mudgeeraba. "The Reserve Bank of Australia's official cash rate has a range of effects across the economy, and it definitely lifts the average buyers’ property prospects," said Murray Duthie, Principal, First National Mudgeeraba. In February the RBA cut the official cash rate by 25 basis points, bringing it down to 2.25 per cent. CoreLogic RP Data's head of research Tim Lawless said that this took the interest rates to their lowest point since 1968. "This means near-unprecedented opportunities for Australians to buy real estate at great value and demand appears to have been re- energised by less expensive debt," Murray said. Even though prices across Australia have been generally rising for property, the cash rate situation can actually make it easier for people to buy a home, despite higher prices. And in Queensland, first homebuyers may qualify for 'no stamp duty' which also helps boost the affordability of their first home. “But in Mudgeeraba and the surrounding areas we are seeing an acute shortage of property on the market and more stock is needed to replace those sold,”Murray said. So, if you’re thinking of selling, why not call in and have a chat with Murray and the team at First National Mudgeeraba - you’ll be dealing with people who genuinely care and will do their very best for you! Now is the time to get onto the property ladder

have a cold. Although viruses cause both conditions, the flu virus causes symptoms that are usually more severe and often appear suddenly. Always check with your pharmacist if you are unsure. They will provide you with the most appropriate information and know when to refer you for further medical review. To relieve the symptoms of a cold try to rest, drink plenty of water and non-alcoholic fluids, avoid cigarette smoke and use steam inhalations to help relieve a blocked nose (check with a doctor or pharmacist before using with children). To soothe a sore throat and cough, try gargling with warm salty water, anti-inflammatory, anaesthetic or antiseptic gargles (avoid in young children), sucking on an ice cube or a throat lozenge (avoid in young children) and drinking hot water with honey and lemon. Your local pharmacy is your health destination and the pharmacist and pharmacy staff can provide a range of products, medicines, services and advice about the best treatment for your coughs and colds. The recent cold snap may have you thinking about winter, and coughs and colds that often accompany the change in seasons. Coughing helps to clear the airway. It is caused by an irritation of the lining of the throat and lungs and may be due to an infection such as a common cold or influenza (flu), an allergy, changes in temperature, something in the throat, an irritant (e.g. cigarette smoke) or inflammation (swelling). Coughs are usually classed as either dry (non-productive) or chesty (productive). However, coughing may be a symptom of a serious illness or a side effect of a medicine. Cough treatments will not cure a cough, but they may help relieve the cough symptoms. Treatment depends on the symptoms and the type of cough. If you have a dry, non-productive cough, a treatment that sooths the throat and/or suppresses the cough may help. If the cough is chesty and productive, a cough treatment that will help break up the mucus making it easier to cough may provide relief. Medicine that suppresses a cough is not suitable for a chesty cough. Colds are caused by viruses. There are no medicines that can cure a cold. Some medicines such as cough suppressants, expectorants and mucolytics, antihistamines, pain relievers and decongestants may ease the symptoms of colds and flu. Antibiotics do not work against viral infections and so are not useful for treating colds. Often it may be difficult to tell the difference between the common cold and influenza (the flu). You may think you have the flu when you Treating coughs and colds good health

Draft City Plan 2015 - what it means to your area What the City Plan 2015 will mean for Division 9, covering Advancetown, Austinville, Bonogin, Gilston, Highland Park, Lower Beechmont, Mudgeeraba, Natural Bridge, Neranwood, Numinbah Valley, Springbrook, Tallai and Worongary. The new draft City Plan 2015 offers a fresh approach to managing our city’s long term growth, while maintaining our enviable lifestyle. Thousands of submissions from residents and interest groups have been taken into consideration, and after more than 20 months of preparation, the Council has now handed the plan to the State Government for approval. The City Plan will be the city’s biggest economic lever. It’s a plan for growth and a stronger, more diverse economy, giving confidence to business and certainty to residents about the future of the city. Key aims of the plan include facilitating new housing, providing catalysts for jobs and key infrastructure connections. Over the next 20 years, the Gold Coast’s population is expected to increase by up to 320,000 people, and the city will need around 130,000 new dwellings and 150,000 new jobs to support this increase. Under the plan, local centres will become vibrant, mixed use community hubs, homes to major concentrations of business and residents, and will support the majority of creative, lifestyle and cultural activities in the city. The plan will also encourage diverse housing options that are affordable, attractive and have convenient access to transport, employment, community, recreation and other services. Below are some of the specific changes within the City Plan envisaged for the future of Division 9: • The lifestyle and amenity aspirations of residents in bushland and semi-rural environments are reinforced outcomes in the draft plan. • In Rural zone areas at Austinville, Neranwood and Mudgeeraba, a range of small scale commercial, tourism and recreation activities are envisaged where they do not compromise the landscape character, rural amenity and the long-term rural production potential of the site or adjoining land. • In the plan, further efforts are made to protect the city’s iconic natural landscape, scenic amenity and biodiversity values through the introduction of a new Landscape and Environment precinct within the Rural and Rural residential zones. This will discourage unsuitable development and ensure lots are suitably sized. • Although Local Area Plans (LAPs) have been removed, a Mudgeeraba Village character overlay code continues the aim of ensuring Mudgeeraba’s historical urban form and character is maintained.

• A number of investigation areas have been nominated in the plan. Subject to detailed investigations, these areas will be investigated for land use opportunities and constraints. In Division 9 this includes some of the Rural residential areas in Mudgeeraba north of Mudgeeraba Village and a new area on Bonogin Road. • As a result of submissions to the draft plan public consultation, the proposed Mudgeeraba/Worongary/ Tallai investigation area has been removed from the plan. • In response to submissions to the draft plan, changes have been made to the Rural (landscape and environment) precinct to better align with on-site environment and landscape values. The City has committed to a further review of land in this precinct. • Rural residential minimum lot sizes, except those areas in the landscape and environment precinct , have been amended to reflect lot sizes in the 2003 Planning Scheme. delivers a real sense of place to the area and emphasises the cenotaph to drivers travelling along Railway Street. I’m really proud of the way the RSL worked so closely with contractors and my office to design and build the improved features, and attract funding from multiple levels of government. Karen Andrews MP

ANZAC Day is one of my favourite community days of the year. Regardless of our political persuasion, or what we think about the environment, sport or even government, it is a day when we tend to put aside topics we differ on, so we can focus on the sacrifice of individuals, families and remember the collective community loss due to war, and the freedom and community spirit gained. Far from wanting to make any sort of contentious statement about war or conflicts past, I was encouraged at services I attended that the focus was on ‘community spirit’ among the speakers I heard address the crowds. In Beechmont, the local school was heavily involved in the service, which was delightful, and in the weeks preceding the ceremony members of the community had completed a project that saw over a thousand knitted and crocheted poppies. Older members of the community taught younger members to sew, crochet and knit and had worked together on what was a lovely art installation. It was excellent to meet and chat with Cr Virginia West of Scenic Rim Council, and Scott Buchholz MP who had been to several services that morning with his wife throughout his vast electorate. In Springbrook, I dropped in to the community hall between services and had a quick chat to Mrs Beasley, who was tidying up happily after a busy but successful gunfire breakfast. I also had a chance to lay a wreath with a few of the Springbrook State School students who were involved in the early service and breakfast activities. I’m told that at the later service the Springbrook organising committee invited former Councillor, Ted Shepherd, who spoke about the project to have the Springbrook Cenotaph installed. It’s great when communities work collaboratively to deliver projects that everyone can appreciate. In Mudgeeraba, the Mudgeeraba-Robina Sub-Branch of the RSL organised beautiful ceremonies at dawn and dusk, and managed to optimise the renovated park to its best use. Many commented on how the enhanced park entry now

made a contribution, as well as the RSL itself, and Council covered the remaining cost. Ros Bates MP influence in the state government streamlined some of the state approvals necessary for the project to progress on time. “Stage Two” is in planning phase now, with the RSL offering named commemorative pavers for sale to the community to help with the cost of a community pathway. Pavers start from $50 and please contact my office or the RSL if you’d like to get involved in this part of the project. The next community events of interest include the Mudgeeraba Skatepark expansion open day on 23 May, the QLD State Age Netball Carnival from 6-8 June and the Redbacks (Rugby League) Annual Mudgee Day and Moo Poo Raffle on 13 June. Coming into winter you’ll see Firth Park busy most weekends as the rugby league, netball and baseball thrives down on the fields. I hope you take time to drop in and watch our local sporting teams compete. The families down there are all very friendly and I’m sure they’ll make you feel a part of their family (as long as you’re cheering for the right team!). As always, please contact my office on 5581 1883 if you have any Council queries, drop in to our Swan Lane office with open sessions on a Tuesday morning, or follow me on Facebook or Twitter to keep up-to-date on local events and issues.

esses Local Free breast screening at Robina Community Centre now BreastScreen Queensland’s mobile service, which provides free breast screening to thousands of Gold Coast women each year, is currently visiting Robina Community Centre until July 9. BreastScreen Queensland Gold Coast Service Health Promotion Officer Julia Foreman understands that many women put off having their regular breastscreen simply because it can be difficult to find the time to attend, even though the appointment itself only takes around 15 minutes. “Providing free screening in such a handy location as this is one way BreastScreen Queensland is making it easier for busy women to attend this potentially life saving health check,” Julia said. “Conveniently located right next door to Robina Town Centre, it’s a perfect chance for women to have their breastscreen done, before treating themselves to some retail therapy or grabbing the groceries, all in one handy trip,” she said. “Ladies may also choose to encourage a friend to book their breast screening at the same time, and then catch up for some refreshments afterwards as a reward for taking care of their health.” A breastscreen is recommended every two years for women aged between 50 and 74, as this is the age group where the benefits of screening are most evident. All women, without breast cancer symptoms, are eligible to access this free service from the age of 40. Services are also permanently located at Helensvale, Southport andWest Burleigh. To arrange an appointment at your nearest service phone 13 20 50.

Being prepared for little accidents is an important part of caring for your dog. Just as with ourselves, having a well- stocked first aid kit at the ready will help you deal with an emergency. We recommend keeping a Dog First Aid Kit handy. Make sure that everyone in the family knows where it is. This kit should be clearly labelled and easy to carry. Items to consider keeping in or near your pack include: • The phone number of your veterinary and the number of your local Emergency Afterhours hospital (If you are unsure if there is a Afterhours vet in your area just ask your vet). If your dog has an accident, you don't want to waste precious minutes looking for the phone number. • Photocopies of your pets medical records and a copy of their microchip/ identification paperwork. • If your dog needs to takemedicationwe suggest to keep supply of their medication in the kit (Remember, medications need to be rotated out of your First Aid kit - otherwise they may go bad or become useless). • Muzzle that fits your dog - an injured and frightened animal may bite • Blunt-ended scissors • Tweezers • Bandages (2.5cm and 5cmwide) - you can ask your vet for these as products designed for dogs are more suitable than human products. • Gauze rolls and pads • Adhesive tape. • Sterile eye wash and eye lubricant (available at your vet clinic) • Saline water to wash out any wounds • Sterile water-based lubricant (such as KY® Jelly) - helps hold fur away from wound • An old towel or blanket It can also be a good idea to have a supplementary kit to keep in your car. Although being prepared is a great idea, remember that if your dog has any illness or injury you must first consult your vet. Article courtesy of Purina

Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) are a time efficient and convenient way to access your money any time of the day or night. I think it’s fair to say that we have all used them at one time or another. Unfortunately, due to the very nature of these machines, they ca n be targeted by offenders as a means to get their hands on some easy cash. These offenders may stand a little too close to you while you’re at the ATM. If this occurs, and you start to feel a little uneasy about their possible intentions, cancel the transaction and walk away. You can obtain cash withdrawals by entering the bank and dealing with a teller, or these days you can go to one of the major grocery stores and withdraw cash without having to purchase any goods. In the event you do complete a transaction at an ATM and are approached by an individual advising you that your transaction has malfunctioned and that you need to re-enter your card, please disregard their request and immediately contact your bank. Make a note of your location and the time of your transaction so you can follow up with your bank. Unfortunately, this method has recently been utilised by offenders who managed to steal a sum of money from an elderly person. The victim was tricked into re-inserting their bank card into the ATM, unbeknownst to them the offenders had installed a skimming device between transactions. When using ATMs please remember the following: • Use one located in public view • Check the machine for evidence of tampering • Be discreet when entering your personal identification number (PIN) • Count & secure your money discreetly • If in doubt, cancel the transaction and walk away

all that matters. Poorly fitted dentures can become irritating and it’s important at the first signs of pain you contact Denture Professional. A Denture reline can eliminate irritations and pain as we reline your denture so it fits your mouth perfectly. This consists of adding a new base material to the tissue side of the denture (fitting area) so that it fits properly. An impression is taken inside your existing denture, and in most cases the reline is completed on the same day the impression is taken. Relining affects only the fit of your denture, and will not change the appearance. Relines are required when tissue changes occur due to resorption (shrinking). 2. Australian Farming Families Deb Hunt ‘This is a book about the human aspects of life on the land - the stories of success and failure, life and love, of hardship and celebration - and the passion and gritty determination that characterised every family I interviewed.’ Author Deb Hunt sets out to discover what makes what makes Australian farming families tick. She travels tens of thousands of kilometres to properties at either end of the country, from a vast, dusty cattle run in outback Queensland to the wheat belt of Western Australia and dairy and sheep farms in Tasmania. She introduces us to eight families who survive, even thrive, on the land despite fires, floods, personal hardship and uncertain economic times. We

water directly onto soil and not the foliage - fungal diseases thrive in wet conditions and if the foliage is wet during the night, this creates ideal conditions for fungal growth. It is commonly thought that plants don't need fertilising in winter, but this is not true. Plants will flourish with the right winter fertilising. What is more important is the type of fertilisers used. High nitrogen fertilisers are more suited for spring through to autumn, but not really for winter. However, fertilisers containing high amounts of Potash (Potassium) are excellent for developing deep green leaves and promoting plant strength and vigour through winter. The three major plant nutrients are phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen, but the amount required can vary according to the season. As a rule of thumb, you’ll want to reduce the frequency of fertilising by half during winter when plants are resting and growing more slowly, or you’ll be wasting fertiliser and money, and possibly polluting the storm water system. For plants that are still actively growing in winter such as bulbs and winter vegetables, it’s important to maintain the feed but swap from a high to a low nitrogen fertiliser, as nitrogen promotes active sappy growth which can be a disadvantage to some plants in winter. Also overfeeding with nitrogen during winter can make the foliage softer and more susceptible to disease. For truly dormant plants such as shrubs and deciduous trees there is really no need to fertilise at all during winter. Mudgeeraba Landscape Centre
