Conclusion We found that starting the vacation period for preparation prior to the period for treatment reduced the number of patients waiting to begin treatment after the period ended compared to when the two vacation periods coincided. Another benefit was that a sufficient number of patients had completed preparations late in the vacation period and could utilize the linacs to full capacity during the first ordinary week. In addition to acknowledging existing staff policies, a simulation model of the RT workflow can assist in making fact-based decisions about how to optimally use available resources during vacation periods.
