FAQ’S Do door closers affect the choice of hinge? YES - When a door closer is fitted you should use hinges with minimum friction appropriate to the door mass after calculating the increased loading. Two • On light internal or cabinet doors not liable to warping Three • On all fire resisting doors tested to BS 476-22:1987 or BS EN 1634-1:2000 • If a door is liable to warping - equally spaced • If door mass is a consideration - two spaced 200mm apart at the top • On all other doors unless the door is over 2m high or 1m wide Four • If a heavy door is liable to warping • If the door is over 2m high or 1m wide • If the door mass is a consideration - two hinges 200mm apart at the top, two 200mm apart at the bottom CHOOSING „„ A HINGE Selecting the correct hinges for the appropriate door use is essential to ensuring a long lifetime and is an important element in a door hardware package. Excessive wear, hinge failure and even door damage can be expected if you don’t consider all the facts when choosing a hinge. If the appropriate hinge is not chosen, it can affect the perfomance of the rest of the hardware on the door. For instance; a door closer may fail to close the door correctly, a lock may not engage into the keep, and even more serious, fire and smoke seals may become ineffective. The door itself could become a physical risk to the occupant/s.

Does it matter what the hinges are made of? YES - Fire doors require hinges made entirely of non- combustible material with a melting point of at least 800°C. The approximate melting points of component metals are • Aluminium - 650°C • Phosphor Bronze - 900/910°C • Brass - 900/920°C • Stainless Steel and Mild Steel - 1371°C Do hinges need lubrication? YES - Hinges are usually supplied dry as fitters do not want to transfer oily marks to finished surfaces of doors/windows. Oiling immediately after installation and periodically after is essential unless stated otherwise in the manufacturers installation instructions. Certain hinges do not require lubrication. Exceptions to this would be in very dusty locations or where the area is washed down regularly with detergent. A mixture of oil and grit can act as a grinding paste and detergent can dissolve oil. This will accelerate wear and a dry film lubricant should be used instead.
