BS EN1935 Hinge Classifications

To ensure you comply with the latest UK Construction Products Directive for hardware used on fire doors, select hinges that are CE marked. Where applicable we have marked hinges with the CE logo to aid you in this choice. BS EN1935 Classification Use the BS EN hinge classification shown opposite coupled with the hinge duty rating to ensure you select a hinge that is fit for the project. Unsuitable hinge selection will result in door failure, and can have fatal consequences for the occupants of the building in the event of a fire.

It is critical that you take into account the calculated door weight when considering the correct hinges and closers for a door. We offer this simple guide to help you make the correct selection.

Add 20% to start for fitting a closer and ironmongery or add 100% if your selected closer needs a backcheck function

= Corrected Door Weight Example 50kg fire door blank, fitted with a backcheck door closer in a busy office corridor = 115kg corrected door weight

Start with your actual door weight

Add 15% for heavy use doors i.e. corridors

Reduce by 10% for light use doors i.e. a storeroom
