SELECT THE RIGHT PAINT COLOUR FOR YOUR HOME Much like many other areas in life, the abundance of choices when it comes to paint colours is enough to make your head spin. Even if you have a good idea of what colours you want in your home, choosing a specific shade from a specific brand can be completely overwhelming. That being said, it’s helpful to remember that paint is completely subjective and there are no wrong choices. Certainly, if you’re painting before selling your home you may want to steer clear of anything too bold or bright. Sticking within the rather large category of neutral is a safe bet, and experts say really any of the neutrals – white, beige, grey, even soft blues and greens – work well when you list. However, if you’re painting for yourself, that’s where the real fun begins. Don’t be afraid to experiment – especially in smaller spaces like powder rooms or in kids’ rooms where colour is expected. If you’re starting a room from scratch, decide if you want to select a paint colour and then purchase furniture and accessories to match or the other way around. If you already own decor items or know which ones you’re going to buy, choose a complimentary colour. Do you want bright yellow walls with neutral furnishings? Soft blue walls with a bold patterned sofa? Or do you love colour and graphics on every surface? If so, go for it! Don’t forget the role a paint colour plays in setting a room’s mood. Spend time in the space before picking up the roller and ask yourself how you want the room to feel. Calm? Go for lighter blues and greens. Energized? Bright red or orange. Dramatic? Deep purple or even black. Just remember that paint isn’t permanent and it can always be swapped out for a different colour entirely. After all, there are about a million colours out there! A DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN INTERIOR DESIGNER Interior designer may seem like a glamorous profession. Who wouldn’t want to shop for beautiful furniture and accessories all day? In actuality, an interior designer’s workday has its ups and downs just like any job. Sure there are occasional extended shopping trips and long lunches with wonderful clients, but there are also days spent chasing down a fabric sample or calming clients upset over construction woes. There can also be a lot of driving, albeit that depends on whether the designer works with clients mostly online or in person. And aside from client meetings, designers work daily with other professionals such as architects, project managers, manufacturers and sales representatives. Still, most designers find the creative aspect and the ability to connect with others to be absolutely worth the occasional chaos.

FRUIT SPRING ROLLS INGREDIENTS: 2 c. canned coconut milk 1 c. uncooked white rice 2 to 3 tbsp. sweetener of choice (optional) 8 rice paper wrappers Sliced fruit Sesame seeds (optional) Warm water 1/2 c. chocolate chips ¼ c. milk of choice 3 tbsp. olive oil or melted unsalted butter

DIRECTIONS: COCONUT RICE 1. In a small pot, combine the coconut milk, rice, and sweetener. Mix well and bring to a boil. 2. Reduce to a simmer and cook for about 20 minutes, stirring frequently. The rice should be sticky but not wet. SPRING ROLLS 1. Fill a pie pan with warm water. Briefly dip a rice paper wrapper in the water and place on a clean, dry surface. Let sit for a few seconds. The rice paper will become translucent and pliable. 2. Sprinkle sesame seeds on rice paper and place 3 to 4 slices of fruit in the center. 3. Add 3 to 4 tablespoons of coconut rice. Make sure the filling is about 1 1/2 to 2 inches from the edges. Fold each side of the wrapper inward, much like you would with a burrito. 4. Fold up the bottom half of the wrapper, tuck under the fillings, and roll shut. Set aside to dry slightly. Repeat. CHOCOLATE DIPPING SAUCE 1. Before starting, create a double boiler. Simply fill 1/3 of a small pot with water. Lay a slightly larger heat safe bowl on top of the pot, making sure that the bottom does not touch the water. 2. In the bowl, combine half the chocolate chips and half the oil. Slowly heat the water so that it is steaming. 3. Once the chocolate has liquefied, add the remaining chips and oil. Mix until melted and smooth. 4. While the melted chocolate is still warm, stir in the milk until thoroughly combined. Pour into a small bowl.
