Herbert Hoover was the president of the United States when the Great Depression started.

The Great Depression started when the stock market crashed. People lost a lot of money! That day is called Black Tuesday. It happened on October 29, 1929.

A lot of people were poor during the Great Depression. They did not have enough money to pay their bills.

People quit buying things. The stores quit buying things from factories. Many stores and factories closed. They went out of business.

The workers lost their jobs. Workers were unemployed. People were worried. People were poor.

Many unemployed workers did not have a place to live. They had to live in shanties. Shanties were houses made of cardboard and junk.

Some unemployed workers were called hobos. They jumped on trains without paying. They left town to find work.

Many unemployed workers were poor and hungry. They got free food from soup kitchens.

The Depression ended when World War ll started. Factories started to make tanks and supplies for the war. The factories hired workers. People had jobs again.
