Scholarship Awards Dinner

In lieu of past Honors Day ceremonies, Roanoke Catholic began a new tradition on May 22, 2019, when more than 200 people gathered in the Gillespie Family Gymnasium to recognize our student scholarship winners and celebrate the generous supporters who make these scholarships possible.

Dr. Robert L.A. Keeley Scholarships Mary Gillespie Hardie Scholarships

Carmen Kuehler, 11th, (pictured left), Alex Zaragoza, 3rd, and Abby Algeier ’19 (University of Mary Washington) each received a $1,000. Dr. Robert L.A. Keeley Scholarship for their strong work ethic and scholastic performance to the best of their indicated ability. A 1938 graduate of Roanoke Catholic School, Dr. Keeley lived a life of commitment to helping others through his dedication and compassion; he demonstrated his gratitude for God’s gifts and believed in the dignity of all people. An avid supporter of the arts and firm believer in Catholic education, Dr. Keeley maintained that the strength of a community’s future is built upon the legacy of previous generations. Dr. Keeley and his wife of 65 years, Nina, instilled in their 15 children a love of learning and the satisfaction that comes from doing one’s best. All Keeley children graduated RCS. Scholarship recipients recognize the value of an engaged citizen whose membership in the school community enriches it. These students are selfless, unassuming people, worthy of the admiration and respect of their peers.

The 2019 Mary Gillespie Hardie Scholarships were presented to Zoe Classey, 3rd, and El Amin Shareef, 11th, for exemplifying the qualities of Mary Gillespie Hardie: intelligence and passion for learning, dignity and humility, great warmth and charity of spirit, and love of God. A graduate of Our Lady of Nazareth and a St. Andrews and Roanoke Catholic High parent, Mrs. Hardie believed that every child deserved a first‐rate education, and instilled in her own children a love of learning and the satisfaction that comes from doing one’s best. Roanoke Catholic School thanks Robert Hardie '83 and Molly Hardie for their generous support of these scholarships that fund full tuition, books, uniforms, and cafeteria charges for a lower school and upper school student.
