Dr. Laurie Elit honoured with the GOC Presidential Medal BY DR. PAUL HOSKINS

Dr. Walter H. Gotlieb is Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Oncology, and the Director of Gynecologic Oncology and Surgical Oncology at McGill University. Dr. Gotlieb recently completed an executive course in health care management and delivery at the Harvard Business School. Dr. Gotlieb obtained his medical degree summa cum laude at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, in his native Belgium, where he went on to obtain board certification in Ob-Gyn. Following two years at the National Institutes of Health, where he obtained the National Cancer Institute Award for Outstanding Performance, he performed a three-year fellowship in gynecologic oncology at UCLA. Dr. Gotlieb was then recruited by Tel Aviv University, Tel Hashomer Hospital, where he co-founded and established the Department of Gynaecologic-Oncology from 1994 to 2003. In 2003, he was recruited by McGill University and GOC welcomes its 19 th President, Dr. Walter Gotlieb

The President of The Society of Gynecologic Oncology of Canada has a multitude of roles but none is more humbling than the selection of the recipient of a GOC Presidential Medal. Choosing the recipient is always challenging as we have so many outstanding candidates within GOC, truly the best and brightest in the field of gynecologic oncology. Dr. Elit receives the Presidential Medal this year because she exemplifies the very kind of physician we all aspire to be. Dr. Elit has dedicated her career to improving the care of women with gynaecologic cancer. And in our profession, to truly achieve this goal, one must excel on many fronts: teaching, research, advocacy, policy implementation, and treatment change, as well as the often under- appreciated role of mentoring. In my opinion, it is

only through effective mentoring that ongoing and future success in health care can be guaranteed. Therefore, selecting Dr. Elit to be the 2016 GOC Presidential Medal recipient was an easy task, a no-brainer. She ticks all of the requisite boxes,

especially in the fields of policy implementation and changing the patterns of practice, and even more so in the arena of international teaching and mentoring.

Dr. Elit’s propensity for international mentoring began early in her career.

A word fromGOC’s 19 th President – Dr. Walter Gotlieb It is with deep appreciation, dedication, and humility that I write you these fewwords as the new President of GOC. Taking a 30,000 foot overview, we have evolved from intuitive medicine, where doctors made decisions based on their experience and intuition, to evidence-based medicine where large randomized phase III trials established gold standards, into the era of precision medicine CONTINUED ON PAGE 2
