At the time of writing this in mid 2021 we are hopefully beginning to see the end of 18 months that no-one could have possibly envisioned – except perhaps a Hollywood blockbuster director. As we went to press with the last issue of Yachting Pages in February 2020, the Mediterranean was just

beginning to go into lockdown to try to stop the spread of COVID-19 and, like everyone else, we were unsure how the year was going to play out. We had just sent 20,000 copies of YP to print at our Italian printers and we had no idea whether they would even be able to remain open in order to print

8

them, and even if they did, what would the virus do to our ability to distribute those copies? Fast forward two months to May 2020 and our distribution team were, incredibly, only 2 weeks behind our original pre-COVID schedule. Our first day in Monaco on 4th May coincided with the initial ‘de-confinement phase’ and we were able to start our distribution. Monday 11th May saw us move into France, the first day of their initial de-confinement process, and in the two and a half weeks that followed we distributed to 500 yachts and over 200 businesses. A total of 2,500 copies of our new Yachting Pages Mediterranean Edition 2020/21, printed on fully recycled stock and with biodegradable laminates, were out and about and making it into the hands of captains and crew. The situation was initially a little fragile – many businesses were still closed when we started, and the yachts barely active. However, as each day passed, the rate of ‘return to a new normal’ followed a growth curve greater than that of the COVID-19 initial infection rate. By the last day of the distribution in France, roads were busy, businesses were open again with social-distancing measures in place, and most importantly, the yacht

crews were cautiously active and the shipyards were genuine hubs of energy and activity. We moved on from France to Italy, which was widely accepted to have been one of the hardest hit countries by this pandemic in the early stages. Yet spending time there, working our way from Ventimiglia to as far as Porto Azzurro on Elba, the anticipation of getting things ‘back on track’ was evident. As in France, I have never seen all of the shipyards so full. This was partly because of the backlog of work built up when the severest confinement restrictions were in place, and also the continued arrival of pre-planned works on new arrivals. One of the few reasons that yachts could move during the darkest weeks of confinement was in order to move into a shipyard for pre-booked works. The marinas were in most cases at their average capacity for this time of year, although admittedly they were less busy than the shipyards. The number of new builds coming off the production lines was staggering. At the end of this phase of distribution our team had completed the following deliveries from Marseille to Elba;

9

• 1,000 yachts directly by hand • 500+ business addresses in France & Italy by hand, including ALL of the superyacht-compatible shipyards and marinas from Marseille to Isola d’Elba Our Mailing House had dispatched to;

deck/quayside before taking it. We had produced a simple sticker which we used to seal each pack, which reassured recipients of the extreme safety measures we were taking. We had also begun to distribute our own branded facemasks for that all- important extra protection. By July we had completed our initial hand distribution around most of the Med and were beginning to re-stock our key distribution outlets (capitaneries, marinas, shipyards and certain key outlets such as busy chandlers) and, as ever, deliver directly on board 500 superyachts with every outing.

• 37 countries, 300 addresses by mail/courier • This accounted fora total of 6,500 directories Whilst most of the world was not managing to operate as usual, Yachting Pages had managed to pivot its plans and find ways to safely move between France, Italy, Spain and Mallorca and

all the usual shipyards. We were taking carefully thought-out measures to respect the current global situation, protect our staff, contractors and all recipients of our directories and Yachting Pages Delivers (YPD) packs. The delivery packs were being prepared by one individual who was regularly tested. They then spent a minimum of 72 hours sealed, either in transit or simply sitting in a warehouse. Our Field Operations Manager was testing for COVID-19 on an almost daily basis – necessary to be able to travel across international borders. During the yacht deliveries, he was actively socially distancing – asking the crew to wait until he had placed the pack on the passerelle/

The number of larger yachts present along the northern Mediterranean shores of Italy at this time was considerably higher than previous July trips. This was due to a combination of the national/ international lockdowns in March/April creating a delay in the progression of works within the yards (this obviously had a knock-on effect for all planned works moving forwards too) and the normal summer season activity (both charter and owner). Yachts that would normally be further afield, generally south, had not yet started their cruises. This was great news for the marinas and ports in these northern areas – they were busier than

10

average for this time of year. The economic impact of COVID-19 on shipyards seemed negligible. They were simply busier further into the summer months than usual, but the net volume of work remained essentially unchanged. November saw us return to France again. This was the first distribution trip in Europe of our brand new 2020/21 editions of YP Refit Guide , YP US & Caribbean, and YP Pacific & Australasia. Within 14 days of leaving the printers in Italy we had already delivered to 235 superyachts, and 22 marinas in Florida. 769 copies of the US & Caribbean edition were out in circulation in Florida, 235 are already on board the superyachts and several thousand copies were in mail bags making their way around the globe. A significant proportion had already been delivered. As with the publication of our 2020/21 Mediterranean directory, this initial distribution phase of the new editions coincided with another peak in COVID-19 infections and the subsequent plethora of restrictions and lockdowns. These did not stop us realising our pre-COVID distribution targets within two weeks of schedule for our Mediterranean Edition, and they were not stopping us now. We checked off France, Italy, Spain and Mallorca again and we actually remained ahead of schedule. Postal dispatches to over 91 countries

went out one week earlier than anticipated. In France, the approach to the second wave was considerably more pragmatic than in April. More businesses had adapted and continued to trade albeit in new or altered formats. The refit season in yachting seemed to have been the least affected segment. The second peak of infections coincided with the start of the refit season in Europe but yachts still needed to respect their Lloyds surveys, still required annual and non-routine maintenance, and the UHNWI’s are the least affected by any economic instability, hence the continuation with scheduled non-essential refits. In the nine months from May 2020 to January 2021, by the time our distribution team returned home, they had completed delivery to: • 4,735 yachts directly by hand • 1,800+ business addresses by hand, including ALL of the superyacht-compatible shipyards and marinas from Naples to Cartagena, including Palma de Mallorca • 988 Shipyards • Driven 25,000km • Driven through five countries in person with 91 receiving directories in total • Reacged 1,500 addresses by mail/courier • 40,078 directories in total If that wasn’t enough, we also decided to launch

11

a new and improved Yachting Pages website. As the pandemic struck and gave us all time to reflect, we recognised it was the perfect opportunity to innovate and improve across the business. Wanting to come out of 2020 considerably stronger than we were heading into it, we put months of work into developing a new platform worthy of hosting the superyacht industry’s leading captain and crew resource. Launched in late September, the new YP website is equipped with exciting new features and enhancements, all designed to better serve our clients and our users. The best has to keep striving for more, right? We are not going to lie and say this has been an easy year. It has taken a considerable amount of time, effort and planning to stay ahead of the pandemic and stay in control of our plans. Our sincere thanks and respect go out to our collaborators, all recipients, our clients, marinas, shipyards and yacht crew plus a special mention of thanks to Captain Sébastien from MY Spice Of Life, instagram @yacht_spiceoflife, for his help this year. Recent times have been tough. Without the incredible reception and co-operation from all we meet and work with none of this would have been possible, so our deepest and sincerest thanks go out to everyone who helped us get our directories and the Refit Guide on the bridge and in the hands of those who need and use them daily. Our pre-COVID distribution targets and objectives have all been achieved. Even in the cases of our YPD Yacht Show Distribution we managed to create alternative distribution routes when shows were cancelled. This included the use of privately chartered tenders to access the yachts in the Mediterranean and pre-arranged exclusive access into individual marinas in Florida. You cannot say that YACHTING PAGES doesn’t go the extra mile for our clients and the last 18 months will have been the greatest testament to that. If you are already a client, thank you for joining us and we are glad we got you out there this year by hook or by crook and if you aren’t yet a client... what are you waiting for? Give us a call today!

ASK THE EXPERT CREWING UP AND TRAINING DURING REFIT

How do I get my crew up to speed with training and competency and a uniformly high standard in a cost and time effective manner during refit? Long Refits are always tricky times for senior crew and management as they seek to keep up levels of safety and competence whilst working with reduced numbers, and then bring on new members when the re- launch date draws near. Training of new crew often gets put back and sometimes becomes on the job training as the vessel sets sail, which is not an ideal situation. Obviously the Covid crisis has made this more difficult but we at Clear Blue Sky as part of the Superyacht Training Group have several approaches to help with this.

1. Crew cannot always get to the boat immediately so we provide on-line video instruction in conjunction with Superyacht Operating Services so that crew can remotely view procedures on board and go through several yacht specific topics. 2. The most common procedure is the Crew Familiarization, which although still physically necessary on board, can be greatly enhanced by a video or VR walk though of the vessel, courtesy of Anchor VR . Our video/VR modules have a series of questions which have to be answered correctly before the crew member can progress to boarding status. 3. Incorporating successful on board training and classroom crew mess sessions delivered by STG these training modules can also include; Firefighting, Casualty Evacuation, Working Aloft., Heli Ops, Security, Interior, Command & Control, Tender Launch, Alcohol and Drugs Policy and more.

“I recommend Ted highly; the content he provides is always very useful and well received by crew and guests alike.” CAPTAIN C.A M.Y. 80M, 82M & 83M

4. Bearing in mind that the majority of new crew joining the boat will not be senior and are therefore less experienced, this recognised on line approach is also relevant to them so that they can become familiar with the layout of the NEW yacht, and not fall back to old practices from previous employment. Crew Profiling using Nasa based technology for successful team building is also part of the discussion here. 5. This approach helps prepare the ground for new and existing crew during a refit and cuts down on training time on board, but also goes hand in hand with on-site on-board training using our STG team prior to launch to put into practice what has already been learned. So, when the owner and the yard are pushing to get the boat out to sea and operating, the ‘Blended Learning’ approach with video, VR/AR, and hands-on training experience can help train new and existing crew in a cost effective and timely

fashion so that the yacht can go to sea in safe manner. In an industry that constantly demands maximum standards, and will pay for them, is there any reason why minimum requirements are applied to safety? ‘Because everyone wants to know that they are in safe hands”.

“ Obviously today, video is the best way to get across the safety message. CBS produced for us a safety video resource that the guests, owner and crew appreciate watching and is commensurate with the high levels of service, safety and professionalism we all aim to achieve in this business. ” CAPTAIN D.M M.Y. 90M

ASK THE EXPERT GALLEY REFIT & SERVICE

Why should you invest in a new galley refit? The galley is the heart and soul of a yacht. It takes a dedicated and motivated crew, as well as professional kitchen equipment, to satisfy the expectations of a discerning owner and their guests. We firmly believe the galley is one of the most important workspaces on a yacht. Unfortunately, in our experience, we have seen too many ill-equipped and ill-designed galleys, meaning chefs and stewards are having to work in difficult conditions leading to an unhappy work environment. In our long- standing experience of planning and fitting superyacht galleys, we work together with the chefs and the crew to improve the quality and efficiency of a yacht. A new galley featuring an effective workspace not only increases the motivation of its crew, but it also increases the yacht’s value.

A complete refit or a partial exchange? We will create the right solution! We have gained experience across almost 30 years of service on countless superyachts and mega yachts, making us the most experienced fitter in the industry. This knowhow allows us to set new standards. If you desire the exchange of a single device, we will do our best to incorporate the newest technology. For example, an upgrade to a new induction stove, a combi-steamer or a new range hood usually leads to improper mounting dimensions, which makes expensive modifications to the galley’s furniture necessary. In most cases a complete galley refit with state-of-the-art technology is the best solution. Generally, galleys on mega yachts are individually planned and fitted on board.

YOUR GLOBAL SERVICE PARTNER Our skilled staff offers the complete service package. “ We make the impossible become reality “

Planning – where do you start? Working together with the head chef and stewards, the basics for equipment and arrangement of devices – as well as design and workflow – are determined. Following this we include the captain and engineers to determine whether it’s technically feasible and within budget. It is always our goal to create the best possible workspace within a given room. And of course, we adhere to the highest standards when it comes to hygiene. For years we have been working with the leading manufacturers, ensuring we will be able to meet our client’s lofty expectations.

What happens after the refitting? Our task is not complete with the planning and refitting of your galley. Post-project we take care of our client’s needs in any way we possibly can. Our team provides maintenance services and supplies spare parts 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, no matter where you are in the world. Professionalism, commitment and incredible flexibility makes Axel Selgrath an indispensable partner for shipyards, yacht agents, architects and the marine industry when it comes to refitting, furnishing or maintenance services for your luxury yacht’s galley.

ASK THE EXPERT GENERATORS

Marine Generators: The Benefits of Paralleling and more. When stepping onto a superyacht, maintaining access to everyday comforts and the conveniences of our plugged-in society is an expectation. Whirlpools, televisions, microwave ovens, stereos and other advanced entertainment and communication systems make life on the water much more enjoyable, but they also require a lot of power. So, investing in hard working and dependable marine generators in now more important than ever. What should I look for in a marine generator? The best generators are purposefully- engineered to produce very little sound and minimal vibration. Leading

manufacturers are now integrating a variety of features, like enhanced sound shields with separate engine and alternator compartments as well as improved air management systems to significantly reduce sound levels. Advancements in how engines are mounted within the unit have also cut vibration drastically. So, marine generators have come a long way in recent years. Of course, you will also want to select a marine generator backed by a rock-solid warranty and a global support network, so you can rest easy knowing you are covered should any issues arise. Another feature to seek out is a generator that offers fully-integrated paralleling capability. Some digital controllers make it possible to parallel two or more marine generators with a single communication wire. These controllers have a space- saving design that eliminates the need for

power loads between the engines or by running only one smaller generator when loads are low, the engines will run in their optimal state – above wet stacking load – and further from their maximum output. This can significantly extend engine life while also improving a vessel’s general performance. oversized switchgear and have built-in load management software that removes over-fueling issues and the need for exhaust treatment systems. Why is paralleling such an advantage? Paralleling makes it possible to use multiple smaller-sized generators rather than a single large generator. So, the units will fit better in an engine room where space is often tight – providing generator technicians with more room to work. Using multiple smaller generators can also enable better weight distribution for balance and trim, which can save on fuel. Plus, this approach is often quieter and produces less vibration for a better overall experience for both passengers and crew. As a final benefit, paralleling can benefit a yacht’s primary engines. We have 5 main divisions in our company which cover the whole of our field: Thrusters - supply, installation, overhaul and fault find. We are the European Service agents for Wesmar Thrusters.

Deck Equipment - we work with all manufacturers equipment including; Passerelles, deck cranes, winches, shell doors, side accommodation stairs etc. Anything from 5 year service to annual testing. Hydraulic System design - we have the facility to design custom hydraulic systems to suit the clients needs. We can fabricate cylinders, Hydraulic Power Units and build the control system to fit any consumer. General Hydraulic Engineering - this includes, hydraulic system flushing, system diagnostics, hose and pipe fabrication and much more. Our Head office is based in Mallorca, local to all major shipyards and ports. Over the past 5/6 years we have found that over 60% of our refit works have been carried out abroad. Although we are set up to travel globally, we mainly cover the whole of Europe, the Middle East and parts of Asia. In the last 6 months alone, we have worked in Holland, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Germany, UK and Saudi Arabia.

• Certified Load Testing • Hydraulic System Flushing • Full Hydraulic Diagnostics • Particle Analysis

Mallorca is our home but we have maybe neglected our position here due to our works off the island. We are currently building a team that will be island based to offer full attention to our clients in Mallorca. What makes LM different? We always pride ourselves in being an independent company but having close relationships with all major equipment manufacturers meaning we don’t not compete with them but work along side them. This allows us to offer the best possible service with the clients best interests in mind. We offer the same warranty as OEM where possible, which is global, and we are available 24/7. We are able to complete all works in-house meaning we do not have to rely on other companies for machining, fabrication etc, so we can control all work quality and time frames. We have found that it is important to stick to an area of expertise and build upon it rather than expanding into areas we are not so familiar with like many other companies.

We are always looking to expand our team of experienced engineers

so if you think you have what it takes to join our team then

please get in touch via info@lmhydraulics.com

ASK THE EXPERT SEATS & BRIDGE FURNITURE

What is an ergonomic seat anyway? The applied science of ergonomics is concerned with designing products, systems or processes to take proper account of the interaction between them and the people who use them while maximising comfort, efficiency of use and safety. STIDD brought its expertise in the biomechanical human factors field and introduced it to the marine industry 26 years ago when it designed and manufactured seating for the USCG 47-foot Heavy Weather Patrol & Rescue Motor Life Boat (MLB). Designed to operate in extreme conditions to save lives, today’s fleet of 47MLBs and Response Boat Medium (RB-M) continue to rely on STIDD seating. Today mariners of all types worldwide have come to realise the importance of ergonomics and that the crew’s comfort ultimately improves performance, alertness and safety – and no one does that better than STIDD.

Is the STIDD seat a converted car seat? No, STIDD seats are built and designed from the ground up to be marine seats – they are not converted truck or auto-motive seats. STIDD seats are corrosion resistant (CRES), built to Navy standards using CNC manufacturing techniques and proprietary materials. What types of seats are available from STIDD? STIDD offers a complete line of ergonomic marine seating – low back, high back, double seats, shock- mitigating seats, box mounts, motorized seats and more, for boats of all sizes. All STIDD seats offer easy-to-operate multi-functional adjustments available in baked-on powder coat or deluxe finishes with a myriad of upholstery options.

ERGONOMIC MARINE SEATING FOR THE PILOT HOUSE & FLYBRIDGE • YACHT • COMMERCIAL • SPORT • MILITARY

Our unyielding commitment to our customers is the main reason for our success. Ask around the dock - at STIDD - the ONLY product we sell is Total Customer Satisfaction. Where can I buy a STIDD Seat? We sell factory direct and ship worldwide. Call our staff of seating experts to begin your journey to total comfort. We say “there are two types of boats – boats that have STIDD seats and boats that eventually will have them”. Visit us at the Ft. Lauderdale International Boat Show • Bahia Mar
