Chemical Regulations & Labelling

ADR & LQ European A greement concerning the international carriage of D angerous goods by R oad (ADR). If a substance is classified as hazardous for transport it will be assigned a UN number, this dictates the regulations which have to be applied when the substance is transported. Each UN number is assigned a “ Limited Quantity ” ( LQ ) which indicates the maximum pack size of a substance that can be transported without special restrictions. If the LQ is zero, or the pack size exceeds the LQ, then the substance is classed as full ADR and must be transported by a specially trained and licensed courier. LQ pack sizes still require secondary containment i.e. bagged and the box requires an LQ label - see on the opposite page. ADR Chemicals are clearly marked 16 if ADR is applicable. Where possible we supply LQ quantities, but for some chemicals e.g Potassium Metal there are no LQ quantities (PG-1) and are therefore classified as full ADR and must be packed in a box on their own and transported by a licensed courier. The cost to us is around £25.00. We no longer apply a surcharge for this service. Our next day delivery service is not available when shipping ADR chemcials. What’s New? From January 2023 all suppliers of ADR chemicals are required by law to have a Dangerous Goods Safety Advisor. We are fully compliant in this respect. What does this mean? As of 1st December 2010 all substances supplied within the UK are classified and labelled in accordance with the new regulations. The old orange hazard symbols were replaced with the GHS Pictograms 4 shown opposite. Risk and Safety phrases were also replaced, with Hazard and Precautionary statements, 8 as shown on the following pages. Permits/EUDs (E nd U ser D eclarations ) A permit is required by law to purchase certain chemicals. Denatured Alcohol (IDA) aka Methylated Spirit is one such chemical. You only require a permit if purchasing more than 5 litres per annum. However as part of our licencing complaince we require an EUD confirming no more than 5L will be purchased. EUDs are also required for Drug Precursor Chemicals. These are clearly marked 16 if an EUD or PERMIT is needed. We will contact you if required. CLP On 20th January 2009 the CLP element of REACH, European Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 came into force concerning C lassification, L abelling and P ackaging (CLP) of chemical substances. It is based upon the UN G lobally H armonized S ystem of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) and ensures worldwide uniformity. • High quality bottles, if possible UN approved • Safety first - bagged in case of carrier damage • MSDS automatically emailed & available online • Clear & compliant labelling MSDS M aterial S afety D ata S heets (MSDS) provide information on chemicals that help the users of those chemicals to make a risk assessment. They describe the hazards the chemical presents, and give information on handling, storage and emergency measures in case of accident. Chemical suppliers are required by law to provide MSDS at the point of despatch, which our automated system does via email. They are also available on our website, but this alone is not legally compliant. If the chemical has a more severe hazard, the label includes the signal word ‘Danger’; in case of less severe hazards, the signal word is ‘Warning’ Signal Word 12 Is the identification code given to the substance in Part 3 of Annex VI of the Classification, Labelling and Packaging of Substances and Mixtures (CLP) Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008

Catalogue No. 13

The first 3 number(s) of our Catalogue Code references the UN Class. This indicates the overarching product hazard simply from our code. eg. HCl S8001450/2.5L UN Class = 8 i.e. Corrosive.

Grade 14

2 potential ‘Grades’ are available, own own brand and AR. An indication of the quality difference is indicated by the Assay 15 We have also greatly expanded our Analytical Grade range (AR), these are usually an even higher Assay and perfect for experiments where precision is key, such as exams.

Assay 15

The Assay is the quality or purity of a product. This is often linked to the type of the chemical (above).

Info 16 ADR is highlighted but there are NO ADR surcharges

If an EUD is required it is clearly marked If a permit is required it is clearly marked
