1 PSU BASE JACOB’S LADDER The Jacob’s ladder is a high voltage ‘climbing arc’ and consists of a pair of long metal electrode wires, connected to a transformer. The electrodes are protected within a transparent polycarbonate tube, with the transformer enclosed in a plastic casing at the base. The apparatus has an on/off switch to start the formation of the arc and comes complete with a 5 V DC power supply and NiMH rechargeable batteries. When the power is switched on, the transformer steps up the voltage high enough to create a potential difference between the electrodes. This, in turn, creates a spark, which heats up and ionizes the surrounding air, forming a plasma. This superheated plasma causes the spark to move or climb up the ‘ladder’ (the spark is carried up with the rising hot air). As it moves up towards the top of the electrodes the spark becomes less stable, as the separation between the electrodes increases, until it finally breaks and dies when the gap is too wide. The next spark then forms near the base and again starts to rise up the ladder. Cat No. Description Price Per ECT-500-100 Jacob’s Ladder 69.30 ea. ELA-100-100 Mains Plug With USB Socket 6.58 ea. 2 ELECTROSTATIC STRIPS A pack of 20 plastic electrostatic strips, 10 made of clear Polycarbonate and 10 made of white Polystyrene. The Polycarbonate strips can be positively charged and the Polystyrene strips can negatively charged. Simply rub with a yellow duster and let the students work it out! By using the brass holders, the charged strips can be suspended from the string supplied and thus they are insulated/isolated from any earth. Cat No. Description Price Per ECT-230-100 Electrostatic Strips 24.83 20pk ECT-230-150 Electrostatic Strip Holders 17.07 10pk
