We've spent most of the summer getting rid of 40 years of "Ron Stuff" and boy was there a lot of it, more than 6,000 fishing baits and 120 rod/reel combos + tools for every skilled trade in the US and some unskilled ones too. We still have a ways to go, but at least we can find the bottom of the tackle box now. Getting ready to sell the lifelong home is proving to be quite a time consuming endeavour. A special thanks to Sheila Nixon, Dale and Colleen Hall, Scott and Michelle Goemmel and everyone who've done so much to help us through this daunting task. We're selling the house this fall and so the hope is that next year we'll be wandering gypsies living aboard the Bearhooks for a while in the summer. We'll have much more time to spend at the Club and will have a chance to be with all of you and attend the weekend festivities. One of our favorite parts of the Club is the handicap bathroom. The Club is the only place we go to where Jeri can be safe and comfortable in the bathroom. Cudo's to whoever designed it and made the shower the way it is, so much better than any hotel we go to with the wet room concept. This year's almost in the bag, but as they say, "there's always next year" and you'll see much more of us.

Wow, what a jam-packed calendar of excitement since the last Beacon!!! We not only dressed in as much green as possible as we were entertained by The Codgers during the Irish Pub Party. The next weekend was kicked off with Captain Fantastic -- who made us feel like the real Elton was in the house -- followed by a day of cruising around the lake collecting the best poker hand one could get! The following weekend, we brought out our sophisticated side with an afternoon of wine tasting along with exceptional hors d'oeuvres. Later, we tried our Lady Luck at the Euchre Party. If the above mentioned did not get your blood flowing, the next weekend was the Labor Day General Membership Meeting followed by the Past Commodores serving up the traditional P/C Beer Bust, capping off the weekend was the First Mates Southern Hospitality dinner. And last, but certainly not least, with great thanks to our Fleet Captains, we headed to Lexington for a fun filled weekend at the Lexington Harbor. Once again, the event champions and their teams did not disappoint. The season end is fast approaching, but the fun is not over yet. We still have the Commodores Fishing Derby, Smoke on the Water and the final Haul out Party!!

Just a reminder to everyone to please read and follow the instructions for the voting ballots. Unfortunately, year after year, we have unqualified ballots. Please make sure that your vote counts! Excerpt from the By-Laws; Two envelopes will be sent with each official ballot; (a) a plain, inner envelope with no identifying marks, and (b) an outer envelope pre-addressed to the Secretary with a place for the member’s name and roll number in the upper left-hand corner. The member must seal his/her ballot in the plain, inner envelope, then enclose it in the official outer envelope, marked with his/her name and number before the start of the election meeting. Following the Haul Out weekend, we will be holding two Saturday work parties to ready our Island Treasure for the coming winter months. Dates are October 12th and October 19th. Please mark your calendars and plan on attending -- this will be your last chance to complete your four-hour work requirement. If you have already fulfilled your four-hour requirement, please consider joining us and lending a hand, there is much to accomplish is two short weekends.

A big thank you goes out to the First Mates, Past Commodores, the OD and crew as well as all the members that helped. You all made the Labor Day weekend another NCYC success. I also want to thank all the members who stepped forward and put their name on the ballot for our election, “A club does not live by dues alone”. More about the United States Naval Sea Cadets Corp. Great Lakes Division. It is the morning of August 10th 0600 hours and we just departed Harbor Beach, on our way to Thunder Bay. We arrived at Thunder Bay Island about 1330 hours. Again, the weather conditions influenced our decision on our dive site. We picked the wreck of the Monohansett. This ship was a wooden bulk freighter that was built in 1872. In November of 1907, the freighter sought refuge on the lee side of the island from bad weather when a fire broke out in the engine room and was burnt down to the water line and sank. All 12 crew members were rescued. This was a fun dive, the 4-foot diameter boiler still stands on the lakes floor and there are a lot of artifacts, wreckage and the ships large propeller to explore. Now the dive is complete, and the North East winds are picking up, it is time to head into Alpena.

Four years ago, we had the honor of having Governor Rick Schneider as our guest aboard the Pride of Michigan to take part in a dive at the Monohansett. The Governor was very impressed with our Cadets and interested how they carried out their duties. While in Alpena the Cadets visited the NOAA base and Shipwreck Museum, met with the Underwater archeologist Wayne Lazardi and did some more diving. More to come next month.

Hard to believe we are a few short weeks away from Haul Out weekend. The end of the Michigan boating season always seems to arrive much too quickly. The August events were all well organized and well attended. Thanks to all who contributed to making the events successful. Of particular note are a few events new for this year including the Irish Pub Party, restarting of the poker run, the Euchre Tournament and Wine Tasting. It is really exciting to be a part of our Club with so many members finding fun and creative ways to spark participation, enthusiasm and fellowship. No words can express the gratitude of the Club to the members who put in endless hours of extra work to make these events possible. I want to extend special thanks to all of the candidates who stepped forward to commit time and hard work to participate in the governance of our Club. The Club is very healthy in terms of membership and finances. It is vitally important to continually bring new talent with new ideas to sustain our upward momentum and deliver results expected by the greater membership. I hope all members take seriously their responsibility to vote in the upcoming election.

Even though we are approaching the end of the season, we have some of the best events still to come in September including the final Rendezvous at Lexington Harbor, the Commodore's fishing derby and the Rib Cookoff. With addition of prize money donated by P/C Watson, the Rib Cookoff should bring some heavy competition along the usual huge crowd of members and guests. See you all at the Club. Thoughts From Acting NCYC Chaplain Greg Murray

“Remember with me that all our days are one in a lifetime day. Let’s live it, beautifully, gratefully, and passionately. Today I choose Grace over impatience, laughter over worry, and beauty over negativity. I hope you will join me in this thought”

And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men. (Colossians 3:23)

Have you ever seen someone sweep a floor half-heartedly? The result is the opposite of the desired purpose—and it remains half finished. To do something well, you need to put your heart into it. One translation of Colossians 3:23 say’s, “Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord and not for men”. True enthusiasm comes from God. The Lord doesn’t want us sulking around, bored, and languishing at our tasks. He has a plan for every day; and as we tackle the projects before us—whether doing the laundry or building a skyscraper—we should remember we’re doing His will and fulfilling an agenda He designed for us.

Recommended Reading: Colossians 3:22-24 George Matthew Adams wrote, “Enthusiasm is a kind of faith that has been set afire.” If you’re reading this in the morning, go into the day with enthusiasm. If you’re reading it at night, wake up tomorrow with excitement. Say to yourself—“This is the day the Lord has made!” And whatever you do, do it heartily, excitedly, energetically, cheerfully—and with enthusiasm.

When we are given a task for God, we’re to do it heartily with all our might and strength.

North Channel Yacht Club (NCYC) lessee agreement as follows: 1. All leasing fees are due at the beginning of the period stated above. Policing the lessee’s area for trash and bagging of trash and placing in designated containers or area. 7. Mooring of the vessel in a safemanner. 8. Failure to comply with the terms, rules, or regulations of this lease agreement is grounds for termination of lease. 9. Portable toilets are not to be emptied in the canal, marina areas or PortaJohn.

Dear Members,

NCYC will be leasing storage space in the NCYC parking lot from October 20, 2019 to May 3, 2020.

The Board is limiting storage to boats and other watercraft on trailers, camping trailers and other wheeled RV units. A condition of storage is that the unit is not stored in the parking lot BEFORE OCTOBER 20, 2019 and must be removed from the lot BEFORE MAY 3, 2020. NCYC must be able to determine the owner of every vehicle stored in the parking lot. Your name and/or MC or license number must be visible on the front of the unit (facing outward so it can be viewed from the center of the parking lot). Please look at your unit after it’s covered to be sure this information can be seen. Failure to do this will result in your unit being towed at the owner’s expense. Regular inspections of the lot will be done throughout the winter.

Storage fees will be $50 for units up to 20 feet, $75 for units up to 30 feet and $100 for units over 30 feet.

If you are interested in leasing space this winter, please sign the Winter Well Lease Agreement and return it along with your check to the address listed below. The Lease Agreement is available on the NCYC website under the “Documents” tab. The insurance policy number, insurance carrier and MC or vehicle license number must be included in the Lease Agreement.

By-Laws, Board, Policy, and Traditions What are they, what’s the difference, why do we have them? Ron Draper NCYC Director, Publications June 1, 2019 By-Laws The By-Laws of the North Channel Yacht Club are a legal document, and exist primarily to define our Club as a single legal entity so it can relate to various private and government institutions and agencies. Secondarily, By-Laws provide a roadmap for our Club’s government, activities and actions. The By-Laws are a legally binding agreement between the Club and the Members and between the Club and other Institutions and Government agencies. By-Laws provide an outline for how our Club will operate as an organization. Our status as a Not for Profit Organization requires us to keep a record of them and abide by the provisions contained in them. The By-Laws ensure the Club is consistent in its governmental conduct and organization, even though the Officers and Directors change year to year. The By-Laws ensure next year’s Flag and Board will follow the same rules as this year’s Flag and Board. It would be appropriate to think of the By-Laws as compared to the Articles of Incorporation for a Corporation or the Charter of a City, or the Constitution of our Country. By-Laws can be amended; however, it requires a 2/3 Vote of the Membership and the amendment process is burdensome by design. Examples of private and government agencies with interest in our By-Laws: • The IRS is interested in certain aspects of the By-Laws to grant and maintain our Not for Profit tax status, see ARTICLE II. last phrase, among others. • The State of Michigan is interested in our organization’s By-Laws as it relates to the lease of Bottom Land to maintain our East Harbor. • The State of Michigan is interested in our organization’s By-Laws as it relates to the Michigan Liquor Control Commission to maintain our MLCC Club License to sell alcohol. • Our Bank and Insurance Company are interested in our By-Laws as it relates to our ability to maintain bank accounts and insure our property. • St. Clair County Health Department is interested in our By-Laws as it relates to our maintaining a commercial kitchen and serving food for recompence. Without good By-Laws we couldn’t have any of these things. Interestingly, the largest part of our By-Laws is ARTICLE VII. NOMINATIONS, ELECTIONS, BALLOTING AND MEETINGS, with a total of 13 Sections. This is to ensure a fair and equitable Government in the Club and to ensure compliance with standards found in State and Federal election procedures.

What then is the Policy? To understand the Club Policy, it’s important to first understand the Board of Directors. By-Laws ARTICLE VI. GOVERNMENT Section 1 and ARTICLE VIII. DUTIES Section 5. Board of Directors, combined, define the Board of Directors and has vested the BOD with the entire government, control and management of the Club. It is under these By-Law Sections that the Board of Directors has written, maintains, and enforces the Club Policy. The Club Policy is a set of rules that maintain the common enjoyment of the Club and it serves as a basis to avoid conflict in general behavior. The Board of Directors may amend the Club Policy without a vote of the Membership. The Policy is flexible by design, it can be amended quickly as conditions change and as issues arise. Government agencies and other Institutions are generally not interested in our Policy. For instance, no government agency cares if we allow dogs on the Island or how we assign boat wells, sleeping rooms, or how we handle work weekend hours, or other behavioral issues; these are the types of things found in the Policy. It should be noted here that any change in Policy is first reviewed and approved by the Club Policy Committee to ensure it’s in compliance with the By-Laws. No Policy may contradict a By-Law. For the most part, By-Laws relate to duties and responsibilities of the Club as a whole, Policy relates to duties and responsibilities of individual Members. The By-Laws and Policy are equally enforceable and a Member violation of either document is no more or less enforceable than the other. This brings us to Traditions Traditions are things our Club and Members do as a matter of enjoying and passing down to future Members certain customary principles and beliefs that define our Club’s social culture. That’s a fancy way of saying we do certain things because we always have, and we like it that way. In a very real sense though, the North Channel Yacht Club sometimes seems to have more Traditions than By-Laws or Policies, and in some instances may appear to elevate them above the By-Laws or Policy. While not officially recognized or enforceable, it’s the Traditions that make our Club the family-oriented group of people it is. To coin a phrase from the modern lexicon, the Traditions are the glue that hold our Club together. We may fight like cats and dogs over the By-Laws and Policy, but when the Flag raises on the Sunday before Memorial Day, we’re all in agreement and get a lump in our throat and would take to the floor anyone who disagrees.
