USD Academic Support Mike Matoso is in hi s first year as Coordinator of Athl etic Academi c Support at the Uni versity o f San Diego. The USO Athl eti c Academi c Support Program is des igned to assist and moti vate student-athletes in the ir j ourney and progress towards their academi c goa ls, and ultimate ly gradu ati on. The primary obj ective is to improve the student-athl etes' study skill s, support them in their academic work , and encourage scholastic achi evement. It is essenti al th at student-athl etes receive the nec– essary academi c ass istance to co ntinue normal prog ress toward a deg ree while partic ipating in athl etics. US O student-athletes rece ive ass istance through advising , progress reports, academi c tutors, campu s learning centers, such as the Logic, Math , and Writing Centers, and the Accelerated Study Prog ram. The Acce lerated Study Program provides a monitored, quiet area open onl y to the student-athl etes to ensure quality study time . These services are avail abl e to all USO student-athletes. "Participating as a Division I athlete requires an enor– mous amount oftime and dedication. Each day, our students face the difficult challenge of balancing their academic and athletic com– mitments. The purpose ofour academic support program is to assist with the university's mission of developing well rounded students. Our program offers students a quiet environment where they can study, seek academic advise, learn about different campus services and receive tutoring." The University o f San Diego athl eti c department recogni zes the need fo r all athletes of all spo rts to engage in a comprehensive strength and conditioning program. The USO strength and cond iti oning program has been designed to deve lop fun cti onal strength , speed , power and endur– ance. The deve lopment of these phys ical attributes is ine ffecti ve if the athl etes are not abl e to carry them over to the pl ay ing fi e ld. Adhering to a properl y designed program o f strength training, conditi oning and nutrition can enabl e our men and women to become the best poss ibl e athletes they can be, whil e simultaneously re– duc ing the inc idence of injury. USO student-athl etes rece ive inten– sive instructi on on proper we ight tra ining tech– nique ; speed. powe r and ag ili ty deve lo pment ; and sport-specific conditi oning . Their stre ngth and cond itio ning programs are spec ifi c to the nature of the ir sport or pos iti on. Eac h athl ete is ind iv iduall y mo nitored th rougho ut the ir pro– gram to ensure the greatest chance o f athl eti c prog ress.
