Moon Garden Katherine Boxall’s abstract paintings layer acrylic, spray paint, pastel, oil, and household paint to construct bold compositions that feel both immediate and considered. Her colorful works carry a strong physical presence. Marks are laid down with urgency, yet held in careful balance by veils of color built up over time. Color and material accumulate, erode, and reassert themselves, creating surfaces that feel lived-in rather than resolved, as if the paintings are records of sustained negotiation rather than singular moments of expression. Her work invites contemplation, encouraging reflection on how we experience material, color, and texture. One of the defining characteristics of Boxall’s work is her ability to create atmosphere, emphasizing mood and sensation. The surfaces often appear softened or partially obscured, as though filtered through memory or emotion. This approach allows the work to resonate on a personal level, leaving space for viewers to project their own experiences onto the imagery. Time is also embedded in the surface of Boxall’s paintings.
