Katherine Boxall-Moon Garden 2026

KATHERINE BOXALL Moon Garden

Moon Garden Katherine Boxall’s abstract paintings layer acrylic, spray paint, pastel, oil, and household paint to construct bold compositions that feel both immediate and considered. Her colorful works carry a strong physical presence. Marks are laid down with urgency, yet held in careful balance by veils of color built up over time. Color and material accumulate, erode, and reassert themselves, creating surfaces that feel lived-in rather than resolved, as if the paintings are records of sustained negotiation rather than singular moments of expression. Her work invites contemplation, encouraging reflection on how we experience material, color, and texture. One of the defining characteristics of Boxall’s work is her ability to create atmosphere, emphasizing mood and sensation. The surfaces often appear softened or partially obscured, as though filtered through memory or emotion. This approach allows the work to resonate on a personal level, leaving space for viewers to project their own experiences onto the imagery. Boxall frequently draws inspiration from natural environments and urban spaces. Her paintings might suggest a hazy horizon or a fleeting moment of light passing through a window. These are not presented as fixed scenes, but as shifting impressions. Through layered applications and subtle tonal variation, she creates a sense of depth that feels both physical and perceptual, resulting in work that is at once intimate and expansive.

Color plays a central role in her practice, shaping the emotional tone of each painting. In some works, muted palettes are punctuated by moments of brightness, guiding the viewer’s eye while maintaining a sense of calm and control. In others, more saturated and vibrant colors create a heightened sense of energy and optimism. This balance between restraint and intensity reflects her sensitivity to how color directs experience. Time is also embedded in the surface of Boxall’s paintings. Built up through layers that range from thin washes to thick, tactile passages, the work reveals the sequence of her decisions in the studio. Quick, gestural marks in pastel are set against slower, more deliberate pours of paint, while drips record movement and gravity as active participants in the process. Together, these elements—material, color, and time— form the foundation of Boxall’s practice. Her paintings do not seek a fixed image, but instead hold the viewer within an ongoing process of looking. They reward close attention, offering a space where perception can shift and deepen over time.

Katherine’s abstract expressionist paintings are bold, beautiful and intelligent. They exude conviction, energy and knowledgeable composition while making, I believe, a significant contribution to the understanding of contemporary works of art. Jerald Melberg
