Research shows potential for DAS to enhance pipeline leak detection

concept – one with little documented positive proof. As such, the real-world testing we have conducted is a genuine first.” Operating primarily in the oil and gas and pipeline sectors, Fotech has developed the Helios system, which converts an optical fibre up to 40km long into a solution that is equivalent to tens of thousands of individual vibration sensors. Real-time detection of the vibrations caused by acoustic disturbances along the fibre is translated into information that will aid the oil and gas operator in exploration, production and delivery activities, or a pipeline operator with intrusion detection, leak detection or pig tracking activities.

focusing on leak simulations conducted in an actual pipeline environment and in direct comparison to existing technologies. This testing demonstrated DAS’s efficacy as a pipeline leak detection monitoring technology, with a number of benefits standing out when compared to conventional solutions. Chris Shannon, CEO of Fotech Solutions, commented, “In recent years DAS providers have been successfully deploying DAS monitoring solutions on pipelines around the world. However, to date these deployments have focused on the application of third party intrusion detection as part of operator efforts to enhance the security of their pipeline assets. “Leak detection is just as important as security for pipeline operators, but utilising DAS technology for leak detection remains a relatively new

Fotech Solutions, a linear asset monitoring technology specialist, has published research findings that demonstrate the viability of distributed acoustic sensor (DAS) technology as a pipeline leak detection monitoring tool. The research was presented at the International Pipeline Conference (IPC) 2018 in Calgary, Canada. Historically, pipeline leak detection monitoring has been achieved with the aid of a number of technologies, such as mass balance systems or acoustic pressure wave monitoring systems. While DAS has received interest as an alternative for leak detection monitoring, the only studies into its potential had been conducted in controlled laboratory-based environments. In order to demonstrate DAS’s full potential, Fotech conducted extensive real-world testing of the technology,
