WAGNER LEVERAGES THE CATERPILLAR PRODUCTION SYSTEM (CPS)

As part of our Continuous Improvement plan, Wagner Equipment Co. uses the Caterpillar Production System (CPS) at almost all of our earthmoving equipment service shop locations, our two main warehouses in Aurora and Albuquerque, and at all Wagner Rents rental stores. CPS uses “Lean” thinking and tools to help us serve our customers better, and make our operations run more efficiently. Lean is a concept that is part of the Toyota Production System, which has been used for decades to improve the efficiency of Toyota’s factories and those of many other auto makers. Caterpillar adopted it for their factories in the 2000’s, and later created a special version for their dealers, including Wagner. We sell and support the equipment that the Cat factories make, but the main Lean concepts of CPS are nevertheless very appropriate to Wagner’s operations. Chasing Waste One of these Lean concepts is the relentless focus on the elimination of waste. Waste can be hiding anywhere – not only in factories, but also in shops, warehouses, yards and office environments. In the CPS system, there are eight wastes, spelling “DOWNTIME:” Defects – Anything that isn’t done correctly the first customer needs or faster than the customer needs. Waiting – Results from any interruption to the flow that causes a delay; often it is interdepartmental. Non-Utilized Resources & Talents – Not utilizing the creativity or skills of all employees… due to injury or mismanagement. Transport – Long-distance movement of materials or tools; double- or triple-handling. Inventory – Finished goods or work in process that exceeds current demand. time and therefore requires rework or repairs. Over-Production – Producing more than the Motion – Unnecessary, inefficient, or unsafe movement of personnel while doing work. Excess Processing – Process steps that do not add value for the customer. Over-complex processes.

As part of our CPS roll out, our teams are taught how to spot these wastes in their

operations and are also taught some best practices to reduce or eliminate them. These best practices are not rocket science; they are common sense steps that are useful for any business. The 6S Process To help our work areas put some of these best practices in place, we use a process called 6S – Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain and Safety. We have used this process in all of our shops to improve their safety, efficiency and image. The steps are simple: Sort – take everything out of the area and only put back what is needed for the work. Discard every thing else, or put in a storage area. Set in Order – as items are brought back, put them in the best location and arrangement for the work that they will be used for. Shine – make sure all items are clean and in good working order. Shine also applies to the work area itself – clean the area well when all items are removed in the “Sort” step. Standardize – create designated places for storing items and mark or label these places as appropriate. Using a shadow board for commonly used tools is a good idea in this step. Sustain – put a plan in place to keep all this hard work from being wasted. Devote some time on a regular interval (daily, weekly, at end of each job, etc.) to restore cleanliness and order. Safety – safety is a benefit of a clean and organized work space, and it is also a prerequisite when you begin any 6S process. CPS has been a great driver of improvement at Wagner. The program strongly complements our core values of Safety, Teamwork, Communication, Accountability, Excellence and Integrity. We are now using CPS as part of our daily work to help make our operations more efficient and better focused on serving our customers.

CONFIGURING WHEEL LOADERS TO TACKLE YOUR WORKLOAD

To properly size the bucket on your wheel loader, a simple rule of thumb is to use the rated load (FTSTL/2) divided by the material density. This will give you your target bucket size. If your application requires loading a truck or hopper with a tall height, you may want to consider a machine with a high lift linkage option or purchasing a rollout bucket to help increase dump height. Something to keep in mind—a machine with higher horsepower doesn’t translate to a higher FTSTL and vice versa. If the loader is properly designed, horsepower will never translate into higher FTSTL. If your application requires operation of hydro-mechanical attachments, such as brooms, snow blowers, power box rakes or cold planers, it is important to select a machine with the amount of hydraulic horsepower needed to operate that attachment at maximum performance. Features such as high flow hydraulics or four-valve hydraulics may be needed to run specialty tools. Dimensional requirements are also important factors to consider, especially if you are working on jobsites with limited space or if you need to transport the machine to multiple sites. For instance, if the jobsite has a tight turning area, a larger wheel loader may not be an option since

When configuring a wheel loader for purchase or rental, the first thing to consider is the primary applications it will be performing. Will you be utilizing the machine for basic bucket and fork work? If so, how much weight will you be lifting and how high will you need to lift it? In this case, it’s important to take a look at the machine’s full turn static tip load (FTSTL) and lift height. Here’s how these configurations break down: The FTSTL defines the amount of bucket material weight it will take for the machine to tip when the loader arms are level and the machine is fully articulated. The rated load for a bucket is 50 percent of the FTSTL and can be up to 80 percent of the FTSTL for a set of forks. It can guide you as to how much the machine can safely lift while in operation. Depending on the ground condition, you may be able to safely operate the machine at a reduced factor; however, using rated load as a guide is a good starting point. For example, if you need to be able to lift 6,000 pounds of material in the bucket, you want to select a machine with a 12,000 pound FTSTL and 6,000 pound rated load.

they have a larger turning radius. Will you be using a trailer to transport the machine to each jobsite? If so, it’s critical to select a wheel loader that fits within the towing capacity of your truck and trailer.

Cylinder Snubbing – Slows down the implements before you reach the end of the cylinder stroke, creating a smoother operation and improving efficiency with better material retention.

Features That Help Save Time, Reduce Wear and Improve Operator Comfort

Rimpull Control – Helps minimize tire spin by allowing you to adjust the torque to match your underfoot conditions.

So far we have provided tips on configuring the base wheel loader requirements to match the needs of your application. Additionally, many advanced wheel loaders have special features designed to help reduce owning and operating costs, maximize machine performance and improve operator comfort. These technologies include: Ride Control – Uses the lift cylinders as shock absorbers for the payload to take bumps out of the road. This provides a more comfortable ride for the operator if your applications require a considerable amount of roading.

Programmable Kickouts – Allows the operator to save lift and tilt positions and recall them with a simple motion of the joystick. On advanced wheel loaders this can be done inside the cab to provide smooth, predictable loader arm movement. As you can see, there are several base requirements, as well as enhanced features, to consider when configuring a wheel loader that can accomplish the requirements of your workload. NEAR MISSES Story by Liz Wiler, Allegra

Reporting a near miss is difficult.

Employees feel that reporting the near miss is hard to do, too time consuming, or is a convoluted process. Utilizing a short form to collect only the most critical data is a key way to encourage near miss reporting. Think outside of the box and find ways to encourage others to

The fatal injury rate is higher in the construction industry than the national average for ALL other industries. Workplace accidents and injuries resulted in 3,937 Workman’s Compensation Claims and 522 hospitalizations (per 100,000 employees) in a single year. Additionally, there are an average of 112 fatalities annually. One every three to four days.* The need to be attentive, vigilant and deploy well thought out safety practices is critical. A key element to any program should include reporting the “near miss.” The National Safety Council classifies a “near miss” as an unplanned event that did not result in injury, illness, or damage, but had the possibility to do so, but a fortunate break in the event chain prevented the incident.** The “near miss” will often occur prior to and likely multiple times before an accident occurs. Near misses are typically not reported. Clearly, the need for accurate reporting of near miss incidents, subsequent evaluation and process improvement for accident avoidance is critical. The number one reason the “near miss” incident is not reported is fear. Fostering a company culture that supports employee safety as a primary concern can help alleviate the fear of reporting a near miss. Embarrassment is another reason that employees are unlikely to report the near miss. Using a nonjudgmental reporting procedure to collect the near miss data is a great way to create a workplace that values safety. Praising workers who come forward to share near miss incidents is also helpful. Although hard to imagine, sometimes employees don’t recognize that an accident almost happened. Worse yet, that a near miss is so commonplace that it is perceived as a normal part of the work day. Managers can bring awareness to near miss incidents by encouraging workers to review and collaborate on near miss situations and how to avoid them.

provide suggestions for reporting and prevention. An online form through a company portal or text messaging service might encourage more and better communication. In some cases there may be a reporting system in place, but little or no instruction on the process of near miss incident reporting has been given. Incorporating near miss and accident reporting into the employee on boarding process is key. Owning up to a near miss incident may leave an employee feeling that others see them as either weak or accident prone. Fostering an environment of personal accountability and team work improves camaraderie and can help dispel these feelings. In some environments workers feel pressured to keep quiet when the reporting of a near miss will impact compensation. By segregating safety statistics into accidents and near misses and connecting bonuses to accident rates versus near miss reports employers can encourage reporting and provide a complete view of the company’s safety culture. If a report is made, but nothing is done to address or correct the cause of the near miss or no follow-up is communicated, the perception is that reporting a near miss incident is simply not worth the trouble. Always take the near miss report seriously. Thoroughly read each one, document, investigate and create a corrective plan of action. Inclusion of the team is a great way to encourage participation in safety programs and efforts.

the entire team aware of the program and of course encourage participation.***

Most importantly, managers must have a process for employees to report the near miss and all accidents.

Prioritizing jobsite safety is of the utmost importance. It’s never too late to put a great program together.

More workers than you’d suspect find themselves with suggestions for safety improvements but are not sure how to share or talk about a safety concern. Take some time and create a near miss report form and a physical location or process to turn completed forms in. Make

Tillage machines are designed to cut and mix the corn residue with the soil, break up compaction and reduce the size of the soil clods. “You want a small particle size so there is a good balance of air, water and soil for next season because it is all about soil health,” said Larry Kuster, senior marketing specialist for AGCO. Sunflower offers disk rippers with 5, 7, 9, 11 or 13 shanks. Using a disk ripper creates a compaction-free zone for the next crop. “Producing 200-bushel corn is almost becoming a norm, so we’re looking at 5 tons plus of corn residue with a lot of nutrients left in that residue,” Kuster explained. “If that can be sized and incorporated back into the soil a lot can be reclaimed for next year’s crop.” The 4600 Series has a 9-shank folding version disk ripper. “That’s pretty unique and gives you a pretty good size ripper a narrow transport width to make it easy to get down the road,” Kuster explained. Sunflower disks have 24-inch shank spacings. “The narrower spacing for the ripper shanks and wing points take the lift and send it out in a 45-degree angle. So TILLAGE MACHINES

the lift intersects with the lift of the neighboring shanks to shatter the soil,” the marketing specialist explained. “If they’re stretched out to 32 inches or more, you won’t get common shatter.” Farmers can select from straight points, as well as 7- or 10-inch wing points. “Most customers choose the 7-inch wing points because they do an excellent job of getting under the hard pan and lifting,” Kuster noted. A coil tine harrow and reel and a spike tooth harrow attachment are available for the disk ripper. “The popular attachment is the coil tine harrow and reel because farmers like the hydraulic capability of the reel,” the AGCO spokesman said. “When it is wet the reels tend to pick up wet soils so they are able to get the reel up and out of the way if necessary,” Kuster explained. “Also they can dial down the amount of down pressure on the reel when necessary to break up the clods to leave a nice, smooth soil finish.” Wagner Equipment Co. is proud to be an AGCO Sunflower dealer. POWER SOLUTIONS VALUE ADDED TO CUSTOMER Wagner Power Systems offers Infrared Thermography

What is Infrared Thermography? Infrared Thermography is a state of the art method of inspecting and diagnosing electrical systems and components to identify “hot spots” and potential electrical system failures. Increase Uptime » Hospitals, data centers, banking institutions, warehouses, and retail facilities rely heavily on the health of their primary and emergency electrical systems. » Infrared inspection is being successfully used on a regular basis to check for electrical problems preventing downtime and financial impact. Picture parameters: Emissivity: Refl. temp. [°F]: 0.98 69.8 » This is an example of one of the many thermographic applications that both increase uptime and saves money. Reduce Risk » Shutting down electrical systems is by far the last choice and not considered a viable option. Failure of component would be catastrophic and costs could be significant. » Frequent monitoring and thermal imaging will accurately evaluate the situation and take corrective action to manage the problem without failure. VisionLink IN ACTION

Customers like to keep things simple. When asking customers the value of using VisionLink, here’s what they had to say:

1. VisionLink helped us track down a stolen skid steer. The individual was caught not only with this unit but was loading another stolen unit on a trailer. 2. VisionLink prevented the theft of a loader. An alert was sent that a loader was powered on after hours. The loader was being used to open a storage bin which triggered the alarm. The police reported to the scene. The suspects escaped but no equipment was stolen. 3. VisionLink allows us to set up maintenance plans and alert processes that automatically inform our maintenance personnel that services are due.

4. VisionLink speeds up the parts ordering process because VisionLink knows the machine and puts parts ordering functions at our fingertips.

5. VisionLink provides a central location where actual jobsite hours can be compared against what the superintendent is billing on that job.

The value of VisionLink is clear and the results are tangible.

If you’re ready to take your equipment to the next level with technology, VisionLink is where it all begins.

Technology adoption takes time and training. Wagner wants to help you get started and here’s how. Join us for a weekly VisionLink informational session.

Join us for our first session: Wednesday, March 15th from 8:00-9:00am MTN. Agenda - VisionLink Basics Register by email: kbohling@wagnerequipment.com Teleconference and web meeting details will be sent to the email of each registered participant.

Wagner Equipment Co. WAGNER’S TECHNOLOGY SOLUTIONS - BEYOND VisionLink Technology is an investment. It makes sense to understand your options and get the most out of it. Discuss these with your Wagner Sales Representative and select your optimal technology solution. 1. Consider the application and type of tasks you need to accomplish with the machine and technology. What specific challenges are you facing? Does your site have good cell coverage throughout or would a satellite signal work best? 2. Ask us if we have the technology you're looking for in the rental fleet or in the demo area. There's no substitute for some hands-on exposure to the benefits of technology. 3. Ask a Wagner representative to explain how built-in technologies are different than add-on aftermarket technologies. 5. GPS and/or UTS 3D require design file(s) in addition to a GPS/GNSS base station and/or UTS instruments. Ask your Cat rep about support offered in the adoption of 3D technology offerings. 6. Talk to your rep about how long it will take to calibrate a machine and get it ready to work? Can it be done at the worksite? 7. Ask about onsite training and other support for technology the same way you get support for the machine. 8. Set up an evaluation period to measure the advantages you’re getting from the technology. It can take a few months of consistent use with the technology to become proficient. Once your operators are comfortable and taking full advantage of the technology the benefits will become more visible. 4. Ask about the differences between 2D and 3D options where applicable.
