Fast track for London and New York

A British firm, Global Marine Systems, is laying a transatlantic submarine communications cable on the Atlantic seabed. At a reported cost of $300 million the high speed fiber optic cable, known as the Hibernian Express, will eventually stretch 3,741 miles to connect financial traders in New York and London. Hibernia Atlantic, the company behind the project, said the cable will offer sub-60ms latency, initially lit with 40Gb

technology and could be upgraded to 100Gb technology in the future. Financial traders currently rely on submarine cabling dating from the 1990s. As millisecond delays in trading cost money, the new cable is claimed to be cost-effective for its customers. Predictions set the cost of linking via the Hibernian Express superfast bandwidth to be around 50 times the cost via existing transatlantic cables. The Hibernia cross-Atlantic cable

is Global Crossing’s AC-1 cable, offering transatlantic connection in 65 milliseconds. The Hibernian Express is expected to offer 59 milliseconds. A one millisecond advantage in financial trading could be worth up to $100 million (£63m) a year to a large hedge fund. The new cable will start from New York and follow the circular London-to-New York route used by aircraft, 310 miles shorter than any existing route.
