QUITE rightly, IWCS takes center stage in the October issue of wiredInUSA. For 60 years now this symposium has played an important role in the wire and cable calendar and can be justifiably proud of reaching its diamond anniversary. It is, therefore, fitting that the show features heavily in this issue (see page 30). Also of serious note is that nanotube cables can now be developed to carry as much current as copper – despite the fact they can be knotted or woven together and weigh six times less than copper. It is said that money talks. This has never been more true than in the case of the Hibernian Express high speed fiber optic cable being the next transatlantic cable to be laid to connect financial traders in New York and London. At 59milliseconds to deliver data on the other side of the pond, six milliseconds faster than the AC-1 cable, this could be a potential saving of around $350m to a large hedge fund. Now that’s a speedy saving! David Bell Editor
