Pipe for green power generation Radius Systems has supplied Dong Energy with over 11km of black polyethylene recycled pipe in sizes 63mm and 225mm, used as protective ducting for the electrical cabling system leading to the onshore substations for the Westermost wind farm project in Yorkshire, UK. Radius Systems worked closely with Fusion Provida and Eco Drill to ensure the timely manufacture, delivery and installation of the pipe as it was crucial for the scheme that delays were kept to a minimum at the start of construction.

to adapt and bring solutions to the challenges faced during this installation, has been of particular benefit to this scheme.” The offshore construction of the wind farm at Westermost Rough will begin in the first half of 2014 and is expected to be fully commissioned in the first half of 2015. Once operational, the turbines will supply electricity for around 200,000 UK households and the project will contribute to the UK’s commitment to reducing CO 2 emissions and its target of power generation from renewable energy schemes.

Andy Rodgers, regional sales manager for Radius Systems, explained: “This is the first wind farm project we’ve been involved in with Dong Energy, but the team consisting of Radius Systems, Fusion Provida and Eco Drill has previously worked together on similar schemes. This experience has been invaluable for this project and the combination of Radius’s reputation for manufacturing and supplying high performance quality PE ducting, and Fusion Provida/Eco Drill’s ability

35 next-generation Siemens 6MW tur- bines, with an estimated total capacity of 210MW, are to be installed 8km off the Yorkshire coast. Contractor Eco Drill was appointed to lay the pipe, which was butt-welded into long strings of 60m to 120m and installed using the directional drilling technique. The pipe will be used to protect electrical cables from the substations that will be located in the Burton Pidsea area of Humberside.
