DATE:

President Carter vetoed the Nurse Training Act Amendments which would have

prepared nurses to care for persons who live in remote areas, to design health services for more comprehensive nurse utilization, so that economical, cost– effective care would be available to people to keep them well. The Bill had unanimous Senate approval; the House passed the Bill 393 to 12; HEW Secretary Califano strongly endorsed It, as did other domestic officials and the public. The White House Office of Management and Budget opposed the Bill. Despite his goal to improve health care and reduce costs, President Carter vetoed the Bill because it was inflationary. No Increase fn funds was requested in the bill. By his arbitrary action the President indicates his disdain for a woman 1 s profession, the Congress and domestic officials, and disregards the health needs of the American people.

The elimination of this program poses a very serious threat to the nation's health.
