RURAL TOURISM IN SPAIN

a a CATALAN FARMHOUSE

The architectural origins for the masías in Catalonia and Valencia lie in the ancient Roman villas. Stone is the es- sential building material, together with sun-dried brick, roof tiles and slate. In the Valencia Region, especially in the area surrounding La Albufera Nature Reserve, you'll also find barracas , build- ings with wide corridors and a tradi- tional triangular roof made of wattle and straw. In Galicia, pazos look out over large are- as of rural countryside. They are usually the place of residence of the regional gentry. They are great stone buildings surrounded by gardens and often have their own chapel for religious services. The quintanas or caserías in Asturias are usually in the hills, in fenced-off land and consist of a main building and other facilities like the hórreo , (raised stone, granary), barns and stables. They are usually surrounded by a vegetable garden and orchards. L L www.pazosdegalicia.com www.casonasasturianas.com
