MEET THE TOREROS ZUZANA LESENAROVA 5 '8" Jr. - Novy Vicin, Czech Rep.

Zuzana Lesenarova enters her junior year at the University of San Diego ... had a pre-season ranking of No. 6, but this past fall season she earned the ITA's No. 1 ranking for singles on the strength of her two titles at the first two legs of the ITA Collegiate Grand Slam events ... she opened the season in September by winning the singles title at the T. Rowe Price National Clay Court Championships in Baltimore (df. Mirela Vladulesu ofAlabama-Birmingham, 6-0, 6-1 in final) , then followed that up three weeks later with another title at the Riviera Women's All-American Championships in Pacific Pali– sades, California (df. Vanessa Webb in semis, 6-1, 7-6; df. Martina Nedelkova ofVirginia Commonwealth, 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 in final) ... in jumping out to a I0-0 start after the two tourneys, she knocked off five players ranked in the pre-season ITA top-ten, and became only the second women's player to win the opening two legs ... this past February she attempted to make collegiate tennis history at the Rolex National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships -- she was attempting to become the first player ever to win the first three legs of ITA Collegiate Grand Slam ... she c;:ame close, but for the second straight season, lost in the semifinals (fell to Stanford's Marissa Irvin, 6-1 , 6-7, 6-3) ... Lesenarova has consistently done well in Grand Slam Events -- in addition to her two titles this past fa ll, she has reached three semifinals, two quarterfinals and one round of 16 in her eight Grand Slam tournaments ... last season she· earned NCAA All-America honors after reaching the semifinals of the NCAA Individual Championships -- she finished the year with a record of 35-8 and national ranking of No. 9 ... additionally, she was named the West Coast Conference Player of the Year; was selected AII-WCC in singles and doubles (w/Brigid Joyce); and was named to the WCC All– Academic Team ... her freshman year in 1996-97 she earned NCAAAll– America honors after advancing to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Indi– vidual Championships ... she finished with a national ranking of No. 20 and with a singles record of 27-5 ... she enters the 1999 spring season with an overall record of 101-32 (76-14 in singles; 25-18 doubles) ... prior to USO she attended one semester at the University of Ostrava, Czech Republic ... she chose USO for its academics, tennis program and weather/ location of San Diego ... found USO on Internet and contacted coach Stephens ... she prepped at Gymnasium Novy Vicin ... besides tennis, enjoys downhill skiing and snowboarding ... parents are Miroslav and Helena Lesenarova of Novy Vic in, Czech Republic.
