The options which have been used successfully that are available are: 1 Bottom tow ‘wet bundle’: This method was undertaken successfully on Girassol It is suitable for bottom towing only Difficulties arise in crossing over obstructions or an uneven seabed – this restricts its use to areas of limited existing infrastructure It needs expensive syntactic buoyancy/insulation 2 Flat-pack: Buoyancy can be provided using kerosene and/or macrospheres in an external carrier This permits controlled-depth tow at reasonable depths Buoyancy can be recovered following installation for possible reuse
