Returnin g to this year's team are 30 lettermen including most of the defensive team and key re- turnees from the running and re - ceiving corps. Williams also did a fine job of recruiting , since many of this year's newcomers are ready to fill open positions. He was named to the All-Rookie team. Wil li ams previously had been named to the All -Mid America De- fensive Team as a strong safety at Central Missouri State College. In 1973, the young coach m igrated to USO, where he was the offensi ve backfield coach and special teams coord inator. Wil li ams assumed the role of Defensive Coordinator at USO for the 1974 and 1975 seasons. Bil l became the head coach of the Toreros in 1976 and by 1978, a 7-4-0 season earned him the honor of being named the NCAA Division 111 , District IX Footbal l Coach of t he Year. 1979 saw Wil liams' Toreros off to their best start si nce 1973 w ith fi ve wins in their first six games, on ly to see the record dip to 5-6 with key injuries com ing late in the season . The campus is named Alcala Park after the Spanish university town where St. Didacus (i.e. , Diego) spent much of his time. Complementing its splendid natural setting is the University's location just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego - conven- iently close to the major business, cultural, residential, and rec- reational areas, as well as the rail, bus and air terminals. Founded in 1949, USD is presently experiencing record attend- ance. Undergraduate enrollment stands at 2526, graduate stu- dents bring the overall campus enrollment to 4300. The University includes a College of Arts and Sciences, and Schools of Business Administration , Education , Nursing, and Law. Each is characterized by high academic standards, small classes, and excellent student-faculty relations. Though the majority of students come from the West Coast, every region of the United States is well-represented on campus. Students also attend USD from 24 foreign countries. Recreation and Athletic activities are expanding rapidly and include: sailing, crew, yoga, karate, surfing, modern dance, back-packing , and ballet. USD's intercollegiate sports for men include baseball, football, basketball, cross -country, crew, golf, and tennis. The Toreros will be out to avenge a 39-0 set- The Toreros then travel to the University of Redlands for a September 13th matchup. Last season the Toreros overcame a 14-3 deficit to defeat Redlands 23-14 and put a damper on any Redlands pl ayoff hopes. The Toreros return to USD Stadium on September 20th to meet Claremont-Mudd College. USD is hoping to improve on last performance against the Stags which began a string of five consecutive year' Pamona-Pitzer is USD's next opponent. Last year's 35-16 win over the Sagehens was one of USD's most convincing wins as they ran up 429 total offensive yards. Re- turning halfback Joe Henry ran for 103 On October 4th, Occidental College will be the host of the Toreros. USD dominated the meeting last year, 27-2, holding the Tigers to -41 yards on the ground. USD returns home on October 11th to host the Poets of Whittier College. The Toreros defeated the Poets last year, 21-14, for the first time in five meetings. The Toreros then travel to Laverne Col- lege for the first of two straight road games. Last season USD dominated almost the en- tire game only to have two interceptions and a blocked punt converted into a 21-12 The Cougars of Azusa-Pacific then host the Toreros on October 25th. Last year's 16-14 Cougar win was a tight one as Azusa- Pacific overcame a late 14-10 USD lead to USD's Homecoming football game is Saturday, November 1 at 2:00 PM against Sonoma State College. It will be the first meeting between these two teams. USD then hosts Edwards Air Force Base on November 8th. The Toreros opened the 1979 season with a 38-16 win over the ser- vicemen. The Toreros close out the 1980 football season at home against St. Mary's College, Moraga. USO FOOTBALL STADIUM The USO Football Stadium was built in 1955, to provide students the opportunity to play inter- collegiate lootball and other outdoor sports. Set in a natural bowl. the Stadium has 4.000 per- manent seats located behind the home side of the field. The seats are set in cement and consist of wooclen bleachers, painted Torero blue. There is a lour-foot wall surroundinf the playing surface that was built in 1976, in order to keep the field free from potential mud slides. At the open end of the stadium is the scoreboard, which was generously donated by the Pepsi Bottling Company ol San Diego. Located above the stands are restrooms. aconces- sion stand and the press box. The concession stand is run by the USO Gridiron Club, with all proceeds donated to the USO football program. The press box, which is completely enclosed by glass, houses the oflicial timer, statsmen. the USO coaches and members of the local and visiting media.
