The 1980 football schedule promises to be an exciting one for USD fans as seven of this season's eleven games will be played USD opens the season at home with na- tionally ranked California Lutheran College. The Toreros will be out to avenge a 39-0 set- The Toreros then travel to the University of Redlands for a September 13th matchup. Last season the Toreros overcame a 14-3 deficit to defeat Redlands 23-14 and put a damper on any Redlands pl ayoff hopes. The Toreros return to USD Stadium on September 20th to meet Claremont-Mudd College. USD is hoping to improve on last performance against the Stags which began a string of five consecutive year' Pamona-Pitzer is USD's next opponent. Last year's 35-16 win over the Sagehens was one of USD's most convincing wins as they ran up 429 total offensive yards. Re- turning halfback Joe Henry ran for 103 On October 4th, Occidental College will be the host of the Toreros. USD dominated the meeting last year, 27-2, holding the Tigers to -41 yards on the ground. USD returns home on October 11th to host the Poets of Whittier College. The Toreros defeated the Poets last year, 21-14, for the first time in five meetings. The Toreros then travel to Laverne Col- lege for the first of two straight road games. Last season USD dominated almost the en- tire game only to have two interceptions and a blocked punt converted into a 21-12 The Cougars of Azusa-Pacific then host the Toreros on October 25th. Last year's 16-14 Cougar win was a tight one as Azusa- Pacific overcame a late 14-10 USD lead to USD's Homecoming football game is Saturday, November 1 at 2:00 PM against Sonoma State College. It will be the first meeting between these two teams. USD then hosts Edwards Air Force Base on November 8th. The Toreros opened the 1979 season with a 38-16 win over the ser- vicemen. The Toreros close out the 1980 football season at home against St. Mary's College, Moraga.
