PRIMARY METALS

We started a journey more than a decade ago. A group of hardworking people with a new technology that no one had ever seen. One that had the potential to change the way people viewed safety gloves. One that could change the lives of workers across the world. We started with one industry and one glove. We changed, altered, tested, and trialed until we began eliminating hand injuries for a few large companies. Eliminated – as in zero – none. That’s when we knew we were changing the landscape of safety forever. We grew and expanded from hand protection to arm, leg, and body protection solving century-old safety problems. We did this by working side-by-side with our customers, creating solutions where others couldn’t. When our customers started asking how we could solve other safety problems, we began to seek an innovative partner who shares our values, leads the market globally, and has changed the safety industry in the same way we changed hand, arm, and body protection. Today we’re proud to say we’ve achieved just that. With the help of an innovative German PPE partner – a global leader with over 90 years’ experience – HexArmor ® is expanding our PPE portfolio to immediately include safety eyewear. This joint venture has allowed us to combine resources and address unsolved issues in safety eyewear through manufacturing, engineering, design, and technical expertise, creating the most advanced line of safety eyewear in the industry. Eyewear is just the beginning of what’s to come in a long line of PPE advancements from HexArmor. ® We look forward to continuing working alongside you, our customers, and bringing you groundbreaking PPE solutions that give workers the protection they deserve.

Because in the end, we aren’t just PPE. We’re the confidence, safety, and livelihood of those we protect.

Keeping safety eyewear clean and scratch free not only keeps workers seeing clearly, but it extends the life of the product as well - resulting in significant cost savings for companies. Our proprietary coatings are chemically formulated to perform differently than any other coating on the market – using standard,* alcohol-based cleaner on them can cause damage. For this reason, we’ve created specific cleaning supplies to ensure our TruShield ® coatings continuously perform to the highest standard.

Steel is the most widely used metal on earth– and one of the most difficult and dangerous to produce and handle. While much of today’s steel production is automated, recycling and handling of scrap, maintenance of production lines, and unique steel finishing tasks continually put workers at risk of severe lacerations to hands, arms, and legs. In 2010, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) found that steel-manufacturing plants averaged 6.3 recordable injuries per 100 employees during that year. 1 Data showed that 25 percent of recordable injuries were lacerations to hands, and 3 percent of recordable injuries were lacerations to arms. Recordable injuries can cost PPE for the Hard-Edged World of

organizations anywhere from $32,000 in both direct and indirect costs (no lost time/workdays) to upwards of $1 million per incident (direct plus indirect costs, including lost days). To put this into perspective, some of the largest steel plants in the world employ more than one thousand people in varying capacities. If we were to use the BLS statistic, that would mean that these large plants experience approximately 18 recordable lacerations to hands and arms per year and pay out over $500,000 in injury costs (direct and indirect). The cost burden

associated with recordable injuries can impact revenues, as lost time and payouts must be reconciled by increasing production volumes to offset cost. The cost per injury issue has caused steel companies to push their safety departments to mitigate hand and arm injury risk with improved procedures and proper equipment. Maximum Protection From Cuts and Punctures At HexArmor ® , we know that the hand is one of the most complex parts of your body—the movement of the tendons, bones, tissues, and nerves allows you to grip and do a wide variety of complex jobs. HexArmor ® designers have worked hand-in-hand with safety experts from the leaders in steel production, processing, and fabrication to engineer gloves and body protection with the capability to deliver the perfect balance of exceptional protection, dexterity, and grip. While competitive work gloves provide some protection against mechanical hazards, you will see in the following pages that there are certain areas of vulnerability in products that use technologies like leather, Kevlar ® , and Dyneema ® . HexArmor ® products with SuperFabric ® take key performance attributes like cut, puncture, abrasion, and impact protection to a higher level. Your workers are responsible for producing one of the most widely used products on the planet– are they armed with the best protective tools?

Steel Maintenance and Production Hazards and risks are everywhere in steel mills and production facilities: maintenance of conveyors and equipment, recycling scrap, clearing snarls during rolling, and even walking through coil fields. The right PPE for hands, legs and arms is a critical piece of equipment for every maintenance and production line worker today.

“Our industry can be extremely hazardous. HexArmor ® helped us equip our workers with the products that would maximize our worker’s safety in every phase of our production process.” John C., Facility Safety Director

Protection Comes In Many Forms HexArmor ® has worked with some of the largest primary metal manufacturers in the world to custom engineer safety solutions that address their various hazards. Our hand and arm/body products provide industry-leading protection against punctures, cuts, and abrasions while maintaining the essential grip and dexterity required to work safely and efficiently. SuperFabric ® Is a Cut Above

Standard Synthetic Leather Gloves

HexArmor ® is an exclusive licensee of SuperFabric ® brand material. SuperFabric ® technology is designed to prevent lacerations and slashes from reaching the skin. SuperFabric ® provides Industry-leading cut protection from jagged product edges and the sharpest saw blades. The addition of SuperFabric ® in our glove designs offers the primary metal industry more options for high-performance hand and arm/body protection than everyone else in the industry combined. When you want superior cut protection, you need HexArmor ® gloves with SuperFabric ® . The Puncture Stops Here Punctures from saw blade teeth or metal edges vary greatly in size and shape often entering the hand and arm at angles that make it difficult to prevent injury. Common glove materials such as Dyneema ® or Kevlar ® can be easily pierced because of the knit properties of the material. HexArmor ® relies on advanced fabric technology to stop puncture hazards and prevent injuries.

Rough Around The Edges (Abrasion) Steel rolls are held together by metal banding like you see in the picture above. The banding is cut to free the coil which is then put on a roll machine. This process leaves the banding with a sharp, often jagged edge. Metal banding is a frequent cause of injury on steel sites across the world. Get a Grip When recycling and handling steel scraps, doing maintenance on production lines, or performing steel finishing tasks in mills, hand slippage hazards are everywhere and can result in severe punctures or lacerations. Having gloves with a solid grip is crucial for accomplishing safer, more efficient work. HexArmor ® has a variety of grip styles designed for the tasks that workers in the steel industry tackle every day.

$1.8 Million Injury Cost Reduction One of the largest steel producers in the world was experiencing a dangerous amount of laceration injuries per year. Sharp edges, corners and burrs on flat rolled product, scrap, metal bending, and threaded pipe were ripping through existing PPE. Safety professionals at the company tried a variety of PPE technologies to combat the high rate of lacerations. They were unable to find a solution to reduce injuries and lower costs associated with these hand and arm lacerations until HexArmor ® was brought in.

HexArmor ® Saves Worker From Injury This steel producer trialed a variety of HexArmor ® products in multiple production areas in an attempt to reduce their laceration injuries. Products like the AS019S arm guard, 5030, 5033, and others were put into trial. Within two weeks our advanced PPE technology had saved one worker from a serious injury. “Two weeks into the trial, an employee who was in the pipe shop caught a burr on the threaded end of a pipe…it cut through the leather of the 5033 but was stopped by our advanced cut and puncture resistant technology inside. The worker was not injured. They had seen this scenario many times before and it usually resulted in a cut. It was then that this client realized that many of their lacerations actually began with a puncture.” –Dave G., HexArmor ® VP Global Accounts After seeing proof of HexArmor ® product’s ability to save a worker from an injury, the company expanded the trial. After three months, the steel producer had seen no injuries. After 12 months, still no injuries. By the end of the year, the plant had implemented HexArmor ® products in most departments. The company’s safety records read: • 160+ lacerations per year average, reduced to ZERO • $1.8 million saved in injury costs • Safer employees, better workplace, higher productivity

The Technology Behind Staying Cool We’re bringing cool to a whole new level. With this cooling technology, high-performance fabric is moisture activated so that as water evaporates, fast drying microfibers and natural minerals accelerate the cooling process. When the sun’s rays reflect off the minerals, thermal energy is thrown away from the body. Workers are cooler faster – and for longer. Odor and fiber deterioration won’t be an issue with Bact-Out ® , a proprietary antimicrobial technology that provides resistance and control against 99.9% of bacteria – even after 50 washes! ColdRush products also offer 30+ UPF UV protection to help workers stay safe in the sun. Heat Statistics/Importance of PPE We surveyed 100 workers and found that 93 percent regularly experience heat stress while on the job. According to the CDC, extreme heat causes an average of 658 work and non work-related deaths a year in the United States. If you’re working out in the heat, or managing employees in high-heat environments, be sure to take proper precautions, including checking the heat index, setting up effective water and rest breaks, and using high-quality cooling personal protective equipment (PPE).

ColdRush ® with eVapora ™ Technology HexArmor ® eVapora™ fabric technology quickly absorbs moisture up to six times its weight, retains it, and allows it to slowly and naturally evaporate, which produces a cooling effect on the skin for hours. Once in contact with the skin, ColdRush ® continually wicks perspiration away and stores it in microcavity moisture reservoirs, which provide up to four hours of active cooling. When the fabric dries out, simply wetten to reactivate the cooling effect. At the end of the day, throw ColdRush ® in the washer and reuse.

The Importance of a Glove Trial

A glove trial is the process of field-testing different models of safety gloves, either from a single source or several manufacturers, in order to identify the best glove for a particular job. When done correctly, the benefits of a glove trial include: • Improved hand safety program and equipment and reduced rate of hand injuries • Increased awareness of hand safety issues among workers • Higher rates of compliance with hand safety PPE requirements • Reduction in costs related to hand protection, through increased efficiency and durability of work gloves, or reduced insurance rates, medical costs, and workers’ comp claims Work conditions vary from one job to another. There is no way to tell how effective a particular safety glove will be without testing it in the field to see how it holds up and protects against the actual hazards encountered in the workplace. Although a glove may have tested well in laboratory settings and been granted a high cut rating, it may lack abrasion resistance and break down quickly in the field. If a glove doesn’t offer the same level of protection at the end of the work day as it does at the beginning, then you need to consider another option.

To ensure you avoid wasting time and energy on a poorly-run glove trial, we have outlined a set of proven steps you can take in the glove trial process. These tips and recommendations come from over a decade of experience working with large industrial companies.

How to Properly Care for Your Gloves

Cleaning + Care Most gloves and arm and body PPE are machine washable. Please see hexarmor.com for product specific washing instructions. Increase Your Glove Lifespan by Up To 300% Laundering removes harmful chemicals, perspiration, and everyday grit and grime that can weaken protective fibers and seams. Our team of HexArmor ® solutions specialists are here to help you with this process, and they are more than happy to provide you with all the information you need.

Improper glove care can shorten the life of your PPE. It can also lead to dermatitis, decreased dexterity, loss of protective abilities, and odor. Glove care refers not only to laundering but also proper storage, routine glove checks, and knowledge of materials and their particular strengths and weaknesses. Because there are so many different work gloves on the market, experienced safety managers should be aware of what workers’ gloves are made of and how they will stand up to the applications they’re being used for. Common glove materials include nylon, spandex, leather, cotton, SuperFabric ® *, Kevlar ® , and knit fibers. Each of these materials has a certain way it needs to be cared for. Often there is a blending of the materials, making proper care even more crucial. Proper Storage Gloves should be stored in clean, dry conditions, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Routine Glove Checks Glove life varies depending on the application, environment, and amount of use. It is vital that you perform routine glove checks before beginning work every day. Take note of areas that have begun to wear down, such as loose Velcro ® or a worn-down name tag. If you see holes in the synthetic leather or TP-X ® material on the palm of your glove, this is an indication that its protective qualities may be compromised, putting you at risk of injury. Lingering moisture or a strong odor are also signs that your gloves may need to be replaced. Keeping an eye out for these issues (and others) takes you one step further from a worksite hand injury, which is the ultimate goal of hand protection.
