Earlier in my life, when I worked—always with my body, never my brain—I was paid in cash on Friday night, a ridiculous sum. I put a portion aside. When I wasn’t working, I traveled and I only worked so I could travel. Mass tourism hadn’t yet invaded every cranny of the exotic. Travel hadn’t yet completely become an industry.
