Uncertain Manifesto 3

I knew poverty as well. I couldn’t pay my rent. I went hungry. I begged for food. I knew injustice, brutality. I’m not complaining. If I consider my life with detachment, I see no grandeur in it, none of the grandeur History is brimming with when it tends towards the sublime or the dramatic. Not that everything in my earlier life was cramped or miserable, but History played no part. Or rather: it played a role without actors on an empty set. I’m talking about those cities or rural areas I’ve lived in, within the limits of the western world. I’m talking about my generation.
