New products designed especially for us flooded the market from fashionable clothes to culture, not to mention narcotics. Intensive consumption became our lifestyle and the bed of our renunciation. Who could have imagined that one day it would invade all space. We lived in a Land of Cockaigne, and yet it wasn’t enough. We dreamed of another society. What repelled us about the dominant society was neither its mediocrity nor the inequalities: our dissatisfaction lay elsewhere.
