The Correct Method for Laying a Perfect Floor C licktogether floorboards make installation look easy, but there are several crucial steps that DIYers — and even some nonspecialist installers — often miss. These details are what separate a floor you’ll love from one you’ll simply tolerate. Three critical points to get right 1. Level the subfloor properly A subfloor must be level within 3mm over a 3m span. Cracks or old grout don’t matter, but dips and high spots absolutely do — they’ll affect your floor the same way a leak affects a roof. Finding the low points is simple; fixing them is not. Levelling is a skilled job, and “almost” level isn’t good enough. 2. Allow expansion around every edge Every floating floor needs a proper expansion gap around the entire perimeter. The best approach is to remove and refit (or replace) skirting so the gap is neatly concealed. Where skirting or kickboards aren’t present, scotia or quad may be required. A gap around “most” of the floor isn’t sufficient and will cause issues later. 3. Tackle trims, doors and stairs with care Architraves, doorways and stair edges demand experience and the right tools. Poor cuts and patched gaps stand out immediately. While anyone can cut a 90° angle, very few homes have perfect angles — meaning extra measuring and careful trimming are essential to make everything look seamless. Our professional installers understand these details and focus on delivering a finish that’s a pleasure to live with. The cost of doing it right is small compared to the frustration of living with faults.
Choosing the right type of flooring Laminate: A quality laminate offers excellent scratch resistance, low maintenance, and highly realistic designs. Hybrid: Hybrid flooring is essentially a vinyl plank that can be installed as a floating floor, combining durability with easy installation. Engineered timber: Engineered timber gives you a genuine timber floor that can be sanded back in future years — without the high installation costs of solid timber.
