SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY Antibiotic Use at the Cessation of Milking on Milk Quality RESEARCHERS: Maria L Marco & Heidi Rossow, UC Davis TIMELINE: 2 years (2019 and 2020)

BACKGROUND: Dairy producers are looking for ways to decrease mastitis prevention program costs. There is also increased regulatory pressure to reduce antibiotic use. Common on-farm practices during dry-off include antibiotic applications. OBJECTIVES: To determine whether antibiotic use at dry-off negatively effects mammary immune function and microbiome composition in cows with low somatic cell counts. Identify potentially beneficial bacteria that might be used as future alternatives to antibiotics. INDUSTRY BENEFIT: This study provides proof of concept for targeted use of antibiotic use at dry- off. Dry-cow therapies can be more specifically applied to benefit the cow without increasing antibiotic use. Helps to maintain confidence in milk as a healthy wholesome food while reducing costs due to treating high somatic cell count cows. SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY & CAPABILITY BUILDING California Crisis Drill RESEARCHER: CDRF-CDQAP-CMAB-DMI TIMELINE: 2-day Drill, Early Spring 2019 BACKGROUND: Deliberate milk product adulteration has been identified as a risk for the California dairy industry. Prevention and preparedness for a potential event is paramount to minimize impacts and maintain consumer confidence. OBJECTIVE: Partner with DMI & CMAB to provide a Crisis Preparedness and Readiness Workshop for the California dairy industry. INDUSTRY BENEFIT: Supports improved incident response planning; improved identification and implementation of best practices for food defense and strengthened partnerships among California dairy industry organizations and government agencies. Supports our industry in protecting California ’ s high-quality milk and dairy product reputation and the confidence and reputation of the Real California Dairy Seal.
