TOREROS HOPEFUL

1993 promises to be another successful year for the University of San Diego men's tennis team . With talent and experience throughout the lineup, the Toreros are eager and optimistic. The Toreros will surely miss the services of '92 graduate Jose Luis Noriega, USO's first 4-time NCAA All-American. To compensate for Norlega's loss, and to improve on last year's 13-8record, 15th year Coach Ed Collins can count on greater depth in both singles and doubles. "If not at the top, we should be stronger in the middle and bottom of the lineup, plus we'll be stronger In doubles," said Collins. To break into the national rankings, the Toreros will count heavily on the talented returning trio of Fredrik Axsater. Kevin Brad– ley and Ignacio Martinez.

Axsater. a junior from Taby, Sweden, compiled a record of 19-9 at #2 in '92 and was ranked nationally at #67. In the fall he won the Consolation title of the West Coast Collegiate Championships. he reached the semis of the ASU Invitational and he was a finalist at the San Diego All-College Tournament. Bradley, a senior from Las Vegas, Nevada, was 20-7 at #2 in '92. This fall he reached the quarters at the Rice/America West Tennis Classic and he won the San Diego All-College. Martinez, a sophomore from Tijuana, Mexico, was 23-3 at #3 in '92. He only played one tournament this fall, where he qualified for the West Coast then lost to #1 seed Lazio Markovitz in the first round. Providing experience in the middle of the lineup will be returnees Philippe Hofmann. a senior from Mannedort, Switzerland and J.J. Shobar, a junior from San Anselmo, California. Last year Hofmann was 17-7 at #5; in the fall he qualified for the West Coast and upset #2 seed Charles Auffray of Pepperdine. Shobar, who sat out last year with an arm injury, was 16-14 at #4 as a freshman. In the fall he qualified at the West Coast and was a consolation finalist at the ASU Invitational. "We missed J.J. last year." said Coach Collins. "He's a solid player who competes as well as anyone on this team." The four-man freshman class is headed by Emmanuel Udozorh, a veteran of international junior tennis who hails from Lagos, Nigeria, yet graduated from New Braunfels High School in Texas. In 1991 Emmanuel earned an (ITF) world junior ranking of #27 in singles and #5 in doubles. A natural serve-and-vollier, Emmanuel will add depth to the singles and doubles lineup. Other freshmen include Darren Potkey, who prepped at Ventura High School, where he won the ·91 Los Angeles CIF Doubles title; Tod Oissly, a 3-time MVP on his Leland High Team in San Jose, California; and Tim Truebenbach, #11 in Pacific Northwest in ·91 and #1 in doubles. Competing for singles spots in the lineup are sophmores Mark Huarte (Tempe. Arizona) and Olla Pierrou (Saltsjobaden, Sweden) and junior Robbie Seward (Colo– rado Springs. Colorado). "All three are fine players who give us needed depth." said Collins. On paper this Torero squad looks good; how it pertorms on the court remains to be seen. "It'll depend on how everyone plays their position and how we compete in doubles,· said Collins. "One thing I know for sure - this is a group of fighters - they don't quit." Collins added. The Torero natters will test their skills with the nation's very best teams. On the '93 schedule are dual matches with '92 NCAA Champ Stanford and preseason #1 ranked USC, along with preseason top-25 teams from Notre Dame, Duke, Miami, Minnesota, New Mexico and Arizona State. USO will also be challenged at the Ice Vollies, hosted by the U of Minnesota, the San Diego lntercollegiates, the USO Invitational, and the West Coast Conference Championships. l'I' MN DIEGO .. In 1989 and 1990, Mike, a USPTA member, coached the boys' and girls' teams at Helix High, in addition to directing a NJTL program. USO HOSTS COLLEGE TEAM EVENTS

On February 5-7 USO hosts the 22nd Annual San Diego lntercollegiates, one of the west coast's longest running men's college tennis events. Sanctioned by the ITA, and under the sponsorship of the San Diego Union, the tournament's format involves three separate elimination events for singles and three for doubles. Participating in '93 will be players from Rice, Texas, UC Irvine, USC, Pepperdine, Redlands, New Mexico State, UC Davis, Sacramento State, Point Loma Nazarene, Boise State, UOP, BYU, UC Santa Barbara, Cal Baptist, Port– land, San Diego State, UC San Diego and USO. On March 12-14 USO will host the 7th Annual USO Invitational, an 8-team playoff tournament, involving Yale, Penn, Iowa State, Indiana State, U of Pacific, Nebraska, Wichita State and USO.

Injuries to two key players made 1992 a year of 'What ifs.' As it was, Iha Toreros posted a record of 13-8, earned a mid-season national ranking, won Iha 21st San Diego lntercollegiatas, claimed the

team title at Iha BNP Collegiate Classic and fin– ished second al Iha West Coast Conference Cham– pionships. A sore elbow kept sophomore J.J. Shobar on the sideline throughout the year, and senior All– American Jose Luis Noriega missed the last third of the season because of tendinitis in his shoulder. Texas, Austin, Mashaka and Martinez lost in the 2nd round of praqua\ies, Hofmann lost in the 3rd; Bradley lost in the 2nd rd. of qualifying and Axsater in the 3rd. In Iha main draw, Noriega lost in Iha first round to Courcal of Miss. St. Al the Rice/America Wast Classic, Bradley upset TCU's Ruette before losing in the quarters to Peppardine's Lothringer. Al the November Rolex SoCa\ Regionals, Martinez defeated Pepperdine's Nathan before losing in the 3rd round to Santa Barbara's Markovitz. Al the December San Diego All-College Tournament Axsatar defeated Martinez for the singles title. Noriega and Martinez lost in the doubles final to SDsu·s Numbers and Belloli. The Spring season opened with a win over UC Riverside and then a successful trip lo NorCal, where the Toreros pushed Stanford to the limit, losing in the last doubles match. Noriega beat O'Brien, Axsater defeated Flanagan and Martinez beat Devens. The next day, against then #12 Cal, USD won four of six sirgles (Noriega, Bradley, Martinez and Hofmann won), before the #3 team o\ Axsaler and Huarte clinched the win. With a 6-1 record, along with a 5-1 on-the-road win over Arizona, USD broke into the rankings al #21 . Al Iha Rolex National Indoors, Noriega won Iha singles title by defeating Zurcher, Schattner, Flanagan, Zaalini and Campbell. Attar each match ha iced what was incorrectly diagnosed as a strained deltoid muscle. Al the San Diego lntercollegialas Noriega defeated Axsater for the #t -2 title. Without losing a set, Martinez won the #3-4 division, and in Iha 5-6 division; Seward upset SDSU's Hanson to reach the semis. In doubles Axsater and Huarte won the #3 title. USD won the team title. For Iha 5th consecutive time, the Toreros take the title at the BNP Collegiate Classic, beating Nebraska, Vala and Pacific. In Montgomery, Alabama, al the Blue-Gray Classic, with Noriega sidelined with tendinitis of the rotator cuff, the Toreros lost three at the hands of Drake, UCSB and Minnesota. Atter losses lo USC and Irvine, Iha Noriega-lass Toreros found a way to win over Santa Barbara and San Diego State. Against SDSU Axsater beat McDonough, Bradley defeated Numbers, Martinez beat Sass and Hofmann won over Safdie. At Iha WCCs Martinez and Bradley made the quarters, Huarte upset St. Mary's Noel, Seward reached the rd of 16, and the doubles team of Bradley-Hofmann made the semis. For the second year in a row USD finished second lo Pepperdine. Attar two mcnths of intense physical therapy, Noriega put in his best showing al the NCAAs. After having been stopped at Iha quartertinals in his two previous attempts, Noreiga made ii to the semis

where he lost lo eventual winner Alex O'Brien of Stanford. The Toreros final overall dual match record was 13-8. Final rankings included Noriega al #3 and Axsater at #67.

Al Iha year-end awards banquet, Noriega walked away with most of Iha honors: he led the team in overall wA % with a 21-1 record in singles and a 5-2 mark in doubles; he was elected Team Captain and voted Most Inspirational. Mark Huarte was voted Best Sportsmanship and Kevin Bradley received Iha Most Improved Award.

NORIEGA WINS ROLEX INDOORS

USD's Jose Luis Noriega captured the singles title at the Rolex National Indoor Championships, held in Eden Prairie, Min– nesota February 7-9, by defeating Rice's Steve Campbell, 6-3, 6-7, 7-5. Noriega, seeded 4th, earned his second Collegiate Grand Slam Championship (he won the National Clay Court title in 1989) and improved his record to 30-9 in grand slam competition, the best among active college players.

The final was similar to the other four matches he played leading up to the cham– pionship. He struggled at times in each match, going three sets each time and dropping the first set in the first four matches. For his undefeated play in February, Tato was chosen the ITA Volvo Player of the Month and was ranked #1 nationally.

BRADLEY WINS SAN DIEGO ALL-COLLEGE

In a battle between USO teammates, Kevin Bradley edged Fredrik Axsater 7-5, 6- 4 to garner the 15th San Diego All-College Tennnis Tournament. Held the week of December 5th, Bradley won the 32-player draw without losing a set. In the semifinals he defeated SDSU's Kerry Safdie 6-4, 6-0. For Bradley, a senior from Las Vegas, it was his fourth and last attempt at the title and his first appearance in the final. "I'm happy to win and add my name to the list of winners," said Bradley. Axsater, a junior from Taby, Sweden, who held down the #2 position on last year's team, was trying to defend the title he won

in '91 . At the beginning of the match it appeared that he would do just that, as he jumped off to a 5-2 first-set lead. But Bradley, behind his big left-handed serve, fought back to win five straight games and the first set. With partner Ignacio Martinez, Bradley made it a clean sweep, winning the doubles title. In the semifinals the USO duo defeated SDSU's Jeff Belloli and Mike Bucon and in the final they beat teammates Axsater and Mark Huarte. 9

TOREROS RUNNER- UP AT wees Battling without top-ranked Jose Luis Noriega, USO finished second to Pepperdine for the second straight year. In the final team standings the Waves compiled 111 points, well above the 60 posted by the Toreros. All four semifi– nalists were from Pepperdine, as were the two doubles finalists. Five of six Torero singles entrants advanced to the third round. Only Olle Pierrou, who, in the first round defeated Ryan Blair of Santa Clara 6-1, 6-4, lost in the second round. In the round of 16 Bradley defeated Dave Matisons of Santa Clara 6-0, 6-3; Martinez defeated St. Mary's Chris Sindel 6-0, 6-2; Charles Auffray of Pepperdine defeated Seward 6-0, 6-4; Ashley Naumann of Pepperdine defeated Huarte 6-1, 6-1; and Vince Mackey of Pepperdine defeated Axsater 6-1, 7-5. In the quarters Bradley fell to Pep's Howard Joffe 6-1, 6-4 and Martinez lost to Auflray 7-5, 7-5 In doubles the team of Bradley-Hofmann made it to the semifinals before losing to Pepperdine's Mackey and Joffe. Final team standings: Pepperdine 111 , San Diego 60, St. Mary's 35, Portland 28, Santa Clara 23, USF 20, LMU 13 and Gonzaga 5.

JOSE LUIS NORIEGA - USD'S 4-TIME NCAA ALL-AMERICAN

This past spring, University of San Diego's Jose Luis Noriega accomplished what few college ath– letes can even dream about - he became a four– time NCAA All-American. It marked the first time a USO student-athlete has been so honored. Although he fell short of his goal of winning this past May's NCAA championship, Noriega accom– plished just about everything else possible in col– lege tennis.

Despite missing almost two months of competi– tion with a shoulder injury, Noriega reached the semifinals of the NCAAs before losing to eventual champion Alex O'Brien of Stanford. "I was surprized he was able to go as far as he did," said USO Coach Ed Collins. "Even though his goal was to win it, he went further than he ever has." Born and raised in Lima, Peru, Jose Luis was one of his country's best junior players. When he arrived in San Diego four years ago, he promised himself and his family that he would finish what he started at USO - getting his degree and fulfilling his commitment to Collins. "He's brought a lot of recognition to USO," Collins says. In addition to being a four-time All American, he's been a good student, an extremely hard worker and a model of good sportsmanship." (Noriega won the Rafael Osuna National Sportsmanship Award in '91.) Noriega, who received his B.A. in business in May, did so in four years. "Finishing my education and getting my degree was important to me and my family," he says. "If my pro career doesn't work out, I know I will be able to use my education in the business field."

UNIVERSITY PROFILE

The University of San Diego is an independent, Catholic university located on a 180-acre mesa overlooking Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor, and the Pacific Ocean. The campus is named Alcala Park after the Spanish university town where St. Didacus (i.e., Diego) spent much of his time. Complementing its splendid natural setting is the University's location just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego - conveniently close to the major business, cultural, residential. and recreational areas, as well as the rail, bus and air termi– nals. Founded in 1949, USO is presently experiencing record attendance. Under– graduate enrollment stands at 3,900, graduate students bring the overall campus enrollment to 6,000. The University includes a College of Arts and Sciences, and Schools of Busi– ness Administration, Education, Nursing, and Law. Each is characterized by high academic standards, small classes, and excellent student-faculty relations. Though the majority of students come from the West Coast, every region of the United States is well-represented on campus. Students also attend USO from 24 foreign countries.

Recreation, intramural and athletic activities are expanding rapidly. Among the many recreation and intramural programs offered, some of the favorites include: Mission Bay Aquatic Center activities (water skiing, surfing, sailing, crew), modern dance, aerobics, bowling, karate, back packing, softball, floor hockey, volleyball and tennis. USO intercollegiate sports for men include football, soccer, cross country, basketball, baseball, crew, golf and tennis. In women's intercollegiate sports, USO fields programs in volleyball, cross country, swimming, basketball, softball, crew, soccer and tennis.

A WINNING TRADITION

TENNIS AT USO

USO is proud of its men's tennis program. Twice the team won NCAA Divi- • sion II titles (74,75). In 1979 the team finished second and in 1980 the program moved up to Division I. This winning tradition was started by Andrew Rae, a native of Melbourne, Australia, who won NCAA Division II singles and doubles titles in '74 and '75. In 1978 USD's Rick Goldberg and Par Svensson won the NCAA Doubles Champi• onship. From 1980 through 1982 the natters were regularly ranked among the nation's top 20 Division I teams. In '80 and '81 the Toreros won Ojai team titles. During that time the team was led by Scott Lipton (San Jose, CA), '80 NCAA Div. I All· American), Terry Ward (St. Louis, MO), '81 WCC Singles Champ and '81 Ojai Champ) and Peter Herrmann (San Diego, '82 Ojai Champ). The Toreros were back in the national rankings in '87, on the strength of their 24·9 record and dual match wins over Stanford and Pepperdine. Senior Jim McNamee (Seattle, WA) was WCC Singles Finalist and the team of David Stewart (Saratoga, CA) and Scott Patridge (La Jolla, CA) won the WCC Doubles Championship. Led by four-time NCAA All-American, Jose Luis Noriega, USO won WCC Team Championships in '89 and '90 and earned Volvo/lTA National • Rankings of #14 in '89 and #12 in '90. USO annually competes at the nation's highest level of intercollegiate play. The '93 schedule includes a number of the nation's top ranked teams and several prestigious tournaments. In addition to the 16-team San Diego lntercollegiates and the Pacific Coast Doubles Chps, the Toreros will participate in the BNP Collegiate Classic, the Ice Vollies at U Minnesota.and the West Coast Confer• ence Chps (WCC), of which USO is a member. Fall semester tennis schedule is almost as active as the Spring. USO annually hosts the San Diego All-College Tournament. They participate in the West Coast Fall Men's Tennis Championships, the Volvo Tennis Collegiate Chps., and tho Rolex SoCal Chps at UC Irvine. In addition to intercollegiate tennis, USO offers advanced recreation tennis classes and year 'round intramural tennis events. The Toreros practice and play at USD's West Courts, an 8-court facility located in a park-like setting on the west end of campus. The setting, courts and cool ocean breeze create a perfect tennis environment.
