Rich Memorial Beach In cooperation with the Portland Water District and The Town of Standish, this municipal facility offers a beautiful sandy beach, picnic area and lots of parking. Access is available to Standish residents only who have purchased a seasonal beach membership. In the fall and winter, there is still plenty of opportunity to get out and enjoy the beach. Launch a kayak to take advantage of the fall foliage or ice fish in the winter.

Standish Community Dog Park The Standish Community Dog Park Interest Group is charged with collaborating with the Parks & Recreation Department to help plan and fundraise for a new community dog park at Memorial Park on Rt. 25.

Registering for Programs & Activities Pre-registration and payment are required for all programs unless otherwise noted. Deadlines are generally one week prior to the first class. How to Register Go to www.standishrec.com and log in to your account. If you do not have an account, you will need to create one first. See below ♦ Go to www.standishrec.com and click on the New Account icon on the home page or go to the Account tab at the top right of the page and then select Create Account . ♦ Enter the primary household member and billing information. You must provide an email for billing purposes. This email will be used to send registration confirmation and billing receipts as well as updates or cancellation information for programs. Refund & Cancellation Policies

G eneral I nformation

Refunds If we cancel a program or event, we will refund or credit you 100% of the fee. If you withdraw 3 business days (excluding weekends and holidays) before the start of the program or one-time event, we will issue you a refund, unless otherwise noted. If you withdraw fewer than 3 business days before the start of the program or one- time event, we will issue you a 50% refund, unless otherwise noted. Refunds will be provided in the form of a credit to your account. If you would like a refund to your credit card or via check, please notify us in writing and allow up to 14 days to process. Cancellation Policies We reserve the right to cancel any program which fails to meet minimum enrollment requirements, so please register early! If you

snooze, we all lose! Inclement Weather

When schools are canceled due to inclement weather or an emergency, all programs will be canceled. Notification of cancellation will be sent via email and posted on our website and

Facebook page. Confirmation

We do not send program confirmations or reminders of enrollment. If you register for a program and you have provided us with your email address, you will receive an email receipt that is automatically generated at the time of registration. If you have a question, please call us. Late Pick-Up Policy Because we require staff to remain with program participants until they are released to parents/guardians, it is important that your children be picked up promptly. Therefore, a ten minute grace period will be allowed as long as it is not a regular occurrence. A fee of $5 will be charged for each ten minute increment thereafter. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated. Inclusion We provide reasonable accommodations to qualified individuals with disabilities. In order to accommodate your needs, a request must be made at least 10 days prior to the first day of the program. Please fill out and send us the “Child Concern Form” that can be found on our website.

Before & After School Program We strive to offer children a program that is affordable, fun and safe. One of the key elements of this program is “play!” Through play , children increase their social competence and emotional maturity. Each day quiet time will be offered for participants to complete daily homework. Youth Programs

Who: Children in grades K-5 who attend Edna Libby, Steep Falls and George E. Jack Elementary Schools. Location: George E. Jack Elementary School. Before School Program (BSP): Monday-Friday 7:00 – 8:30 am Excludes all school vacations, holidays, or school cancellations due to inclement weather. The nine late arrival school days are included for participants in this program. After School Program (ASP): Monday-Friday 3:00 – 6:00 pm Excludes all school vacations, holidays, or snow days at George E. Jack Elementary School. Late Arrival Package: The Before School Program WILL be held on the district’s nine scheduled late arrival days. Children enrolled in the After School Program can register for care during these late arrival days for an additional fee. Please call the office if you would like this option added to your account. Fees: Before School Program: $6 per day (paid monthly with auto-pay) After School Program: $10 per day (paid monthly with auto-pay) Cancellation Policy: Written notice is required two weeks prior to the desired withdrawal date. A refund will be issued at a pro-rated amount for the remainder of the program, beginning on the first day of the next monthly billing cycle. Any days remaining in the month of withdrawal will not be refunded.

School Vacation Camps Join Standish Recreation during February and April school vacation weeks for lots of fun and games, both inside and out! Your child will stay busy with field trips, scheduled activities, and themed adventures! Field trips often include bowling, trampoline parks, swimming, sledding and skating, and local parks (weather permitting). Whether interested in sports, crafts, or just chilling with friends, your child will have lots of fun at Vacation Camp! Dates: Tuesday - Friday (no camp on Mondays due to holidays) February Vacation Camp: Tuesday, 2/19/19 - Friday, 2/22/19 April Vacation Camp: Tuesday, 4/16/19 - Friday, 4/19/19 Time: 7:00 am – 6:00 pm Grades: K-6 Cost: Early Bird Registration $125/week of camp (one week prior to start of camp). Late Registration $135/week (if space permits). Location: George E. Jack Elementary School (Tuesday-Thursday), Standish Town Hall (Friday only) Scheduled activities are between 9:00 am - 4:00 pmdaily. Supervised, unstructured play between 7:00 - 9:00 am and 4:00 - 6:00 pm. Please bring a lunch and healthy snacks, a water bottle and come dressed for outdoor play. We have plenty of activities to keep your child busy, and ask that you leave electronics and other toys at home!

Youth Sports Basketball Skills Clinic (co-ed)

Do you want to get ready for this upcoming basketball season? Join us for an introductory program focusing mostly on dribbling and passing skills. We will play different types of games that will include these skill sets. Help develop skills, exercise, make friends, and mostly - have fun! Date: Thursday, 11/8/18 – Thursday 12/13/18 Time: 3:30 – 4:30 pm Grades: K - 3 Cost: $35 Location: Edna Libby Elementary School Gym Girls Basketball This program focuses on instruction and recreational play along with an element of competition through the games that are played against other teams in neighboring communities. Commitment is usually one practice and one game per week. We offer either 2 nd through 4 th grade or 5 th and 6 th grade. The schedule will be released closer to the start of the season. Date: Mondays/Wednesdays/Fridays: December - March Time: Evenings Grades: 2 - 6 Cost: $60 Location: George E. Jack Elementary School & Surrounding Communities Gymnastics In partnership with Maine Academy of Gymnastics students will be introduced to the Olympic sport of gymnastics by using the tumble mats, bars, balance beam, vault and the trampoline. Students will be taught about the fundamentals of strength and flexibility in every class. Gymnastics is a great way to become more physically fit and agile. Football season is never over. Join us for an introductory program focusing on exercise, having fun and sportsmanship. We will teach and review basic football rules and skills through drills and games. We will divide into teams each week and play a fun relaxed game of flag football. Date: Thursdays, 3/14/19 – 4/4/19 Time: 3:30 – 4:30 pm Grades: 3-5 Cost: $30 Location: Edna Libby Elementary School Gym Ski & Snowboarding Program Join us for a skiing /snowboarding adventure at Shawnee Peak. This program will promote exploring the outdoors and being active in nature. You may sign-up for only a lift ticket, a ticket and lesson, or a ticket/lesson and rental. This program offers minimal adult supervision once at the mountain. Please call us with specific questions about the program. Participants will be informed by email and via our website in case of cancellations due to inclement weather and unsafe conditions. Transportation is provided via rec vans and is included in the fee. Helmets required. Please call us if you would like to chaperone. Date: Tuesdays, 1/15/19 – 2/12/19 Time: 3:00 – 7:45 pm Grades: 4 & 5 Lift Ticket Only: $135 Lift & Lesson: $230 Lift, Lesson, Rental: $325 Helmet Rental: $35 Depart/Return Location: George E. Jack Elementary School/ Standish Municipal Center Golf Ready to work on your swing? We will be partnering with Field of Dreams Golf Driving to help develop your golf skills. The program will start off with calisthenics, working on your half swing, and finishing with the full swing. Kids will do drills with both irons and drivers. Each day participants will receive a snack and a drink. Each participant will have their own station, which has been built for safety. Youth Sports Indoor Tennis

In partnership with Grand Slam Tennis we are offering an indoor tennis program this winter. Using the Red Ball, Orange Ball and Green Ball format, gives kids the chance to play the first time out and keep playing without waiting in lines. This format allows kids to rally constantly and gets the coach more engaged. The techniques and skills taught will serve them for the rest of their lives. Start them out with the right-sized gear on the right-sized courts, and they will develop better technique earlier. With low compression balls and smaller courts, kids have a chance to get to the ball, think about their shot and cover the whole court. The lighter, smaller rackets, with grips appropriate for smaller hands, allow kids to develop proper swing patterns. Three sessions available. Nerf Night Who’s ready to have some Nerf wars? Each participant will need to bring their own eye protection and Nerf toy. There will be a variety of individual and group challenges/obstacles to participate in. Please note that Standish Recreation is not responsible for any lost or broken Nerf toys. Please mark your child’s toy with their name. Standish Recreation will supply all of the darts - please do not bring darts from home. Eye protection is required. Pillow/Floor Hockey Join us for some hockey after school. Pillo hockey is played similarly to floor hockey, but the equipment includes sticks with foam padded ends and a large 7” gator skinned ball. Teams will be divided each week, we will focus on sportsmanship, exercise, and having fun. Date: Wednesdays, 3/13/19 – 4/3/19 Time: 3:15 – 4:15 pm Grades: K-3 Cost: $25 Mother/Son Sportsfest Calling all mothers! Would you like to play with your son/s and have the chance to beat them? We will play a variety of games including dodgeball, pillow/floor hockey, obstacle course relays and tag games. This activity will promote playing with your kids along with learning new games to play at home. It will be a fun relaxed environment filled with lots of laughs and being active. This program is designed to bring together a community to help kids learn, grow and harvest food for the local food pantry. Once kids arrive they will harvest the crops grown this summer, have a story read by the librarian, create a craft, make a snack and have the garden harvest presented by a master gardener. Marvels of Science Have you ever wondered what clouds are made of? Or what goes on underneath the surface of the earth or how toys work? Join Mad Science after school to discover these countless wonders of science! Neither rain, nor snow will disrupt our hands-on exploration into the world of meteorology and voyages to the center of the Earth! Classes include: Movie Effects, Earthworks, Living in Space, Science of Toys, Sonic Sounds, Walloping Weather, Life in the Sea, and Mix It Up. Radical Robotics Robotics has never been this exciting! The applications of robotics are all around us and we invite girls and boys to discover first-hand the design, construction, and application of modern- day robotics. Through the integration of exciting modular robotics learning systems and various types of robots, children will discover how robotic devices use sensors to learn about their environment and how people use robots to get work done. Classes include: Robot Challenge, Gear it up, Robot Building (TableTop Robot), Robots In Action, Shocking Isn’t It?, Real Life Robots, Get Your Code On, & Sensory Overload. Movie Night This one is for you, parents! Would you like a night out on the town or a couple free hours? If so, drop your kids off with us for the evening. We will play in the gym, watch a movie, and have pizza (up to 2 slices) and popcorn. Home Alone Class Is your child becoming the age where they can stay home alone? This class is designed to build confidence, emphasize safety issues, and prepare them for the challenges associated with staying home alone. Participants will find solutions to issues including safe internet and phone usage, stranger danger, and food preparation. Participants will prepare a snack as part of the class. Basic first aid skills, identifying potential hazards, and what to do in an emergency will also be discussed. Date: Thursday, 11/1/18 Grades: 4-6 Time: 4:00 – 5:30 pm Cost: $20 Location: Standish Municipal Center Instructor: Gail Platts Babysitter Training Would you like to learn about the responsibilities of becoming a certified babysitter? This class includes the business of babysitting, emergency procedures and basic first aid, child care, amusement of children and more. Upon completion of this course, participants will receive an American Red Cross Babysitting certification. Full attendance is mandatory to obtain certificate. Limited to 14. We are partnering with the Westbrook Animal Refuge League to promote volunteering in the community. During their time at the shelter, kids will get a chance to learn how to interact with all different kinds of animals and perform volunteering tasks such as; cleaning, sorting donations, making food or toys for the animals, and helping with any other tasks needed.

Pumpkin Decorating Celebrate Halloween with us by decorating your own pumpkin. All materials (including the pumpkins!) will be supplied. Pumpkins will be “decorated” and not carved. We invite you to bring your decorated pumpkin to our Standish Spooktacular on 10/27 to be judged for fun prizes! Gingerbread House Decorating

Get in the Christmas spirit and join us for gingerbread house decorating. The houses will be constructed before you arrive. Spirited Painting Class Spirited Paints is a fun night out - a chance to paint. You remember when you were a kid? Even if you draw stick figures, this is a fun time of relaxing creativity! All equipment and supplies are provided by our talented local artist/instructor. She will help guide you through step by step to create your own beautiful masterpiece. And the best part; you get to take home something that you created! So, come grab some goodies and drinks (non-alcoholic but still fancy!) and let’s have a fun evening! Necklace & Earrings- Learn about beading supplies, tools, wires, thread, clasps, etc., and learn to make your own jewelry. Design and create a unique necklace and if time allows a pair of earrings to match. Students will also learn to make a “pendant” focal point for the necklace as well as how to bend wire to make earrings. All materials and tools will all be provided by instructor. The Joy of Uke! Aloha! The humble and indomitable ukulele is currently going through its third renaissance of popularity. Ukulele clubs and societies are springing up all around the world. Maine is no dif- ferent. It’s time you learned the joy of uke for yourself! In this eight-week course you will learn the basics of the ukulele. No prior musical knowledge required! Within the first three weeks you’ll acquire a foundational knowledge to play and sing thou- sands of songs. Individual units will introduce you to the history and development of the ukulele and explore the growing sub-cul- ture of ukulele enthusiasts. Later units will cover an easily acces- sible understanding of music theory. Instructor, Dana Reed is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachu- setts. A talented multi-instrumentalist, for over 40 years Dana has shared his joy of music with thousands of individuals around the world. In collaboration with Saint Joseph’s College, we are offering a comprehensive fitness program geared toward functional exercises which promote strength, balance and coordination. Zach Chase is a licensed athletic trainer working with athletes at Saint Joseph’s College and has experience working with all ages and fitness levels. This program will be in six-week sessions and will include a 30-minute evaluation at the beginning of the session. Evaluations take place before the program starts and consist of: movement screening, medical history and biometrics. Re-evaluations can be done every three months (for an additional fee) to track progress. Date: Mondays and Wednesdays 10/1/18 - 11/2/18 Time: 10:30 – 11:30 am Ages: Adults and Seniors Cost: Full Session (includes one evaluation): $160 Drop-in fee: $12 per class (for those who have had an evaluation) 30-minute evaluation: $40 Location: Saint Joseph’s College in the dance room. Active Senior Citizens of Standish This group is open to all seniors of the Standish community. No invitation is necessary, but reservations are required. Each month brings a new educational topic or entertainment for the group to share. Lunch, social and sometimes a brief business meeting are included. New members are always welcome! Mah Jongg Mah Jongg is a Chinese game played, usually by four people, using rectangular tile pieces. The object is to collect winning sets of these tiles, as in card games such as gin rummy. This game is meant for players who already know the game and are familiar with the Official Mah Jongg rules. If you snooze we all lose...so please register early!Aminimumnumber of participants is required in order to offer trips and classes. Early registration will ensure that your seat is reserved and that you won’t miss out due to low registration. Programs and trips take coordination and planning. The sooner we know how many to expect, the better the planning. Deadlines are generally one week prior to the first class/trip unless otherwise noted, however, more notice is preferred. Most trips depart from the Standish Municipal Center upper parking lot, unless otherwise stated. Please arrive 10-15 minutes early to board the bus. Times listed are “pull out of the parking lot” times. Shopping Trips Sometimes getting out to shopping areas and finding a parking space nearby can be a struggle. We’ll provide transportation from the Municipal Center and you can choose from a variety of shopping trip options below. We’ll provide door-to-door service whenever possible. FALL CHAIRLIFT RIDE AT SHAWNEE PEAK Enjoy the panoramic views of the lakes and mountains of Western Maine and the Presidential Range of NH including Mount Washington from the top of Shawnee Peak. After our chairlift ride and taking in the views towering 1,300 feet above Moose Pond, we’ll continue to Bridgton for lunch at a local restaurant. This trip is in cooperation with local recreation departments and will provide transportation from each community to our meeting place to board the motor coach in Gray. Ricker Hill Orchards Ricker Hill Orchards, founded in 1803, has been growing Maine apples for over 9 generations in the small town of Turner, Maine and now has over 400 acres of apples, 15 acres of cranberries, pumpkins, a bakery, store and more. Join us on a guided tour of the packing facilities, the cider press, the cranberry bogs and the maple syrup boiler. Lunch at a local restaurant will complete our trip. Day two we will make our way to King Arthur Flour’s flagship campus in Norwich, VT, where we will enjoy a history tour of the Baker’s Store and watch bakers at work in the busy bakery. Plus, enjoy lunch on your own or simply a pastry and coffee at their popular café. This trip is co-sponsored with area recreation departments and travel will be in 15 passenger mini-busses.
