In the second section of the training sessions, the managers were introduced to the principles of nudge management and provided a set of nearly 200 nudge management tools, varied types of impulses, tricks or interventions, so-called ‘nudges’, applicable in managerial contexts. Four main categories (Figure 1) of nudges were identified for the purpose of more effective team management in the VW Group and further demonstrated in the training on typical situations brought up by the participants from their practice. The first category were self-nudges (e.g., shadowing the work of a colleague, defining professional goals, etc.) aimed at helping the managers foster personal or professional development of their employees. Likewise, leadership nudges (e.g., walking meetings, meetings in a park, company breakfasts, etc.) were tools aimed at helping the managers advance their leadership skills. Environmental nudges (e.g., relaxation areas, team boards, flowers, fragrances, etc.) then were aimed at improving the working environment of the employees, reflecting their varied personal needs and desires. Process nudges (e.g., blind recruitment, positive meetings, floor to speak for young, etc.) finally targeted the company processes affected by biased decisions or behaviours.
