QUIRKYHOMETRENDS While there are many homeowners who still gravitate toward the traditional when it comes to their decor, there’s a growing camp of people who like things just a little bit quirky. If you want to experiment with adding a bit of whimsy to your spaces, or just want to go deeper into the trend, search out unusual accessories.
Vintage posters, colourful coasters, oddly shaped vases and layered area rugs all create texture and interest to a room. Colourful and boldly patterned curtains and throw pillows are another way to make a statement – especially if the patterns are
purposefully mismatched. Finally, funky furniture or furniture used in a way other than originally intended will have your visitors talking. Try using a chair as a side table, a stool as a
coffee table and pillows around a low table for an uber casual dining experience.
Love grilled cheese? Then this is for you! Close to a traditional grilled cheese, with cheese that doesn’t ooze quite as much. The caramel sauce takes it into dessert territory without making it overly sweet.
INGREDIENTS: Unsalted butter 2 slices white bread 1 tablespoon caramel sauce Granny Smith apple slices (about 1/4 apple) 3 to 4 slices mild cheddar cheese
DIRECTIONS: 1. Spread the caramel sauce on one slice of bread. Top with several apple slices. Place the cheddar cheese on the other slice of bread. Close the sandwich and butter both sides of the bread. 2. Place a skillet over medium heat and allow it to get hot. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, or until the bread is nicely toasted and the inside of the sandwich is melted. 3. Enjoy your grilled cheese!

According to dietician Hanlie Jordaan, the answer is yes! Jordaan says the first – and most important rule – is to not restrict any specific foods. Completely cutting out something you enjoy will only lead to uncontrollable cravings and overindulgence. If you love chocolate, have a small piece when a craving hits. Aside from handling the not-so-healthy foods, Jordaan advises that you really do need to eat your fruits and veggies! Try making your veggies the star of your meal. Your body will reward you for it! Plus, then you won’t feel guilt about eating that little piece of chocolate after dinner. CONCRETEARCHITECTURE From infrastructure, to commercial buildings, to retail shops, to homes – concrete architecture is everywhere. And not just as a structural element either. More and more, designers are using concrete to make a statement. Most often, concrete reads as minimalist and somewhat industrial. But that doesn’t mean it can’t also be used on a country home. Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic Fallingwater is the perfect example of using concrete to help a building blend harmoniously with nature rather than fight against it. Website ArchDaily recently released a list of tips for those in the design world who wish to work with concrete, but anyone interested in architecture should find the information interesting. Consider its exposure to the elements to determine the mix of concrete required. Exposed concrete needs to be finished with a resin, varnish and any necessary waterproofing. It’s also essential that the concrete’s interior metalwork remains hidden from the environment as any such exposure can lead to a compromised structure.
ECO-FRIENDLYDOGHOUSE Even man’s best friend can get in on the eco-friendly movement. A California-based design firm has created an eco-conscious doghouse made with sustainable materials. With a carpeted ramp that leads up to a green roof and a motion- activated faucet and irrigation system, the resident gets useable indoor and outdoor space. Plus, when the weather heats up, the canine inhabitant can cool down with a solar powered fan. Whoever

3SIMPLESTEPSTOHELPREACHYOURFINANCIALGOALS Your financial goals are within reach! Following these three simple steps will bring them closer and help you determine what it is you want out of life. 1. Learn what’s behind your financial decisions. How and where we spend our money is strongly tied with what we value in life. Perhaps you enjoy spending money on vacations, but have yet to start that retirement savings plan. Sit down by yourself, with your partner, even with your whole family and talk about what you value in life. Then, write it down and stick it on the fridge or on a post-it on your desk, which will help remind you of these values. That being said, don’t be afraid to change them as time goes on! We are all constantly changing and evolving and our values reflect that. 2. Know where your money comes from – and where it goes. Most of us are pretty good at keeping track of money coming in. But to truly take charge of your finances, you need to know where every penny goes. Jot down everything you think you spent money on last month. Then, login to your online bank account and see what you
actually spent. Are there “spending leaks” – meaning money slipping out that you were unaware of? Spending leaks can include eating out more often than you realized or making impulse purchases. Change your habits to plug these leaks, reminding yourself you are making these changes to create the financial future you want. 3. Set your financial goals. Now that you know what you value in life and where
your money is going, you can set your short and long term financial goals. Just as you did with your values, write your goals down and look at them often to help remind yourself what it is you want out of life. Perhaps you want to go on a nice vacation next year. Or head back to school in five years. Or build your dream home in ten years. Write these goals down, then start working on a plan to move yourself towards them. Make sure you prioritize the most important goals first, and be willing to let your goals change as your values do. It’s your life – you should live it the way you want to.
