OKLAHOMA CITY REGION

Growth The Oklahoma City Region is the only region to have never experienced a year-over-decline in revenues. In 2012 the region generated revenue growth of 5.8%. While the region is home to one of the largest casinos in the world, WinStar World, the region ranks sixth in average revenue per casino. Challenges Market saturation is a growing challenge for the Oklahoma City Region. The region’s northern tribes (Kaw, Tonkawa, Ponca, and Otoe-Missouria) have been challenged with the opening of the Kansas Star commercial casino, located less than 40 miles north of the Oklahoma state line on Interstate 35. Meanwhile, tribes in the southern region continue to compete for overall market share. Opportunities With market saturation becoming a growing challenge, tribes are focusing on opportunities to expand their businesses beyond gaming, providing greater economic diversification, and obtaining market share from competing tribes through aggressive marketing campaigns. Region Specific News The Alabama-Coushatta Tribe is willing to forfeit $270.6 million and land claims to restore the tribe’s right to open a Class II casino on tribal lands near Livingston, Texas (located approximately 60 miles northwest of Houston). In 2003, the federal court recommended Congress pay $270.6 million for oil, gas, and timber harvesting as well as trespassing offenses on Alabama- Coushatta lands. The deal will require congressional approval; currently U.S. Representative Steve Stockman (R-Texas) supports the tribe’s efforts. The Cheyenne and Arapahoe Tribes (federally recognized as a united tribe) became the first tribe to offer online gaming with www.PokerTribes.com. In 2013, the tribe struck a deal with the state of Oklahoma to operate online gaming, agreeing to only accept international customers. After operating for several months, the U.S. Department of Interior shut the website down as the state did not have the authority to negotiate deals involving exclusive access to international markets. In late 2013, the Chickasaw Nation opened three new attractions in Chickasaw Country including the Chickasaw Cultural Center, the ARTesian Gallery, and the Bedre Café. The attractions are the latest development to promote tourism in southern Oklahoma. While the Chickasaw Nation continues to focus on developments outside of gaming, it still generates over 90% of its revenue from gaming.
