Guidelines - Responsible Exchange and Volunteering 2018

IV. Cabin fever – when the recharge time is still not enough for participants to manage their time on site as a 24/7 commitment, they may begin to suffer from “cabin fever”. This will have to be managed by the host organisation and may result in an alternative placement or improved support for recharge. V. Emotional overload – there is a risk that participants will become emotionally overloaded due to the intensity and closeness they are to their project. This is especially the case where projects are working with vulnerable children or in the sector where abuse is common. Host organisations must consider this prior to placements and have support mechanisms, including professional support if necessary, available to participants. Regular check-in conversations and feedback sessions are essential in managing on-project living participants.
