Jo-Ann Nester was promoted to Director of Athl eti cs at the University of San Diego on September 25, 2003. Nester, who was in her second year as Associate Director ofAthl eti cs and Seni or Woman Admini strator, will oversee all th e daily operations of th e Torero athletic department th at includes sixteen NCAA Di vision I intercollegiate programs. She replaced Tom Iannacone who announced hi s retirement on July I4th after directing the department for fifteen years. "We are extremely pl eased to announce Jo-Ann Nester as USD 's Director of Athletics," stated Bob Pastoor, USD Vice Pres ident fo r Student Affa irs. "Her years of experi ence as an athletic admini strator have prepared her well for thi s position. She clearly understands her role with thi s department and withi n the mission of the university." In her rol e thi s past year at USD, Nester had direct supervisory responsibili ty for nine varsity sports programs including budget preparation and oversight, superv ision ofall head and assistant coaches, scheduling, trave l and program evaluat ion. Additi onally, she was involved with fu ndra ising fo r women's sports programs; she had di rect supervisory responsibility fo r the areas of Compli ance, Academi c Support, CHAMPS Li fe Skill s, oversight of Student Athl etic Council, New Athlete Orientati on program and the Faculty

Team Advisor Program; she assisted in th e monitoring of gender equity; was the Senior Woman Administrator Liaison to the West Coast Conference and NCAA; event management responsibilites for three teams; and was the department liaison fo r Admi ssions, Drug and Alcohol Education, Dining Services, Housing and Work Study.

Nester is committed to ma intaini ng the University and Athl etic Department commitment to prov iding an outstand ing and successful NCAA Div ision I athletic program w ithi n the rigorous academi c env ironment that is the University of San Diego. In 2002-03, six Torero teams went to the NCAA's and Ash ley Swart became the fi rst USO swimmer to quali fy for the NCAA Championships and was named an Honorabl e Mention All -Ameri can. Academica lly, th irteen athl etes were named to West Coast Conference All – Academ ic teams, nine foot ball players we re named to the Pioneer Football League All-Academic team and two student - ath letes were honored as 2nd Team Verizon Academic All-Americans. Conti nuing this tradition ofexce l– lence in the classroom and competi tive arena whi le providing an exce ll ent athlet ic experience for our student-athl etes will be the priority during Nester's tenure as the USO Director of Athl eti cs. Nester came to USO from Dartmouth Co ll ege where she held the posi ti on of Assoc iate Director of Athlet ics for nine years. Her duti es included overs igh t of compliance, student serv ices, promotions and marketi ng, and numerous sports programs. Prior to her appointment at Dartmouth Coll ege, she was the Director of Athleti cs and Recreation at Saint Mary 's Co ll ege in Notre Dame, Indiana between 1984-93. In addition , she has a coaching background at the high school and college leve ls, and has served on several comm ittees within the NCAA, ECAC and Ivy League. Jo-Ann's ed ucational background includes a B.S. degree in Health and Physica l Education from West Chester State Co ll ege ( 197 1); a Master of Science degree from West Chester ( 1976); an Ed.D Doc tor of Education from Templ e Uni versity ( 1985); and she comp leted the Sports Management Institute in the Exec uti ve Program at th e Univers ity of Notre Dame ( 1992).
