UNIVERSITY PROFILE

SETTING The Univers ity of San D iego is an independent Cathol ic institution of hi gher education. Founded in 1949, USO is located on 180 acres overlook ing Mission Bay, San Diego Harbor and the Pac ifi c Ocean. The campus is named A lca la Park and is located just 10 minutes from downtown San Diego. The campus was named after a Span ish village nea r Madrid - A lcala de Henares. Founded by th e Greeks as Complutum, the vil lage was later renamed A l Kala (the Castl e) by the Mos lems. Christians recaptured the vil lage centuri es later and founded a univers ity whose buildings became the inspiration fo r USD's architectura l style . THE CAMPUS The USO campus is rega rded as one of the most architec turall y uni que institu– tions in the country, featuring 18 major build ings designed in an ornamental 16th century Span ish Renaissa nce sty le. Since 1984, USO has completed eleven major construction and expansion projects. A five-story parking garage (1,100 spaces) was comp leted in 1998. A landscaped founta in plaza was finished in the fa ll of 1995, connecting the entrances of the lmmacul ata and Hughes Adm ini stration Center. In 1992, the university comp leted the 45,000 square foot Loma Hal l, w hi ch includes an expanded bookstore, a larger mail center, classrooms and laboratori es. In 1990, th e renova ted Katherine M. and George M . Pardee Jr . Lega l Research Center opened, a fac ility that offers the latest in information techno logy.

ACADEMICS

USO enro ll smore than 6,600 students who have a cho ice of more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The university's academic units incl ude the Co ll ege of Arts and Sci– ences, and the Schools of Business Administration, Education, Law and Nursing. Class size generall y averages between 18-25 stu– dents with the student to teacher ratio being 18:1. Over 97 per– cent of USD's full-time facu lty hold doctorates. In the annual ratings of the country's co lleges and uni vers i– ties, pub lished by U.S. News & World Report, USO moved from the reg ional to national category in 1994. The university is ranked among the top 100 school s in the nation.

STUDENT LIFE

Student activities include cultural events, dances, boat cruises, beach parties, BBQ's, concerts, comedy nights, symposia and much more. Students participate in a wide range of volunteer proj ects such as adult litera cy tutoring, sen ior citizen outreach, and house

• bui lding in Tiju ana. The intramural program is also an integral part of student life at USO with over two-thirds of th e USO community partak ing in intramural sports.

Did You Know? • The University of San Diego was se– lected by the John Templeton Founda– tion for its 1997-98 Honor Roll of Char– acter-Building Colleges. The honor roll recognizes 135 four-year accredited un– dergraduate institutions that emphasize character building an integral part of the college experience. Foundation officials made special mention of USD's "Ethics Across the Curriculum," a campus-wide initiative funded with a two-year, $138,000 grant from the E.L. Wiegand Foundation. USO is one of eight Cali– fornia colleges and universities named to the honor roll.

ATHLETICS

USO is a member of the West Coast Conference for nea rl y alI sports and com– petes in 16 interco ll egiate sports on the NCAA Division I level. The footba ll team compl eted its sixth season in the Pioneer Footbal l League. Women's sports include: basketba ll , crew, cross country, soccer, softball, swimming, tenni s and vo ll eyba ll. Men' s sports include: basebal l, basketball , crew, cross country, go lf, footbal l, soccer and tennis. Since 1990 USO teams have won 5 conference championsh ips; made 19 post-season appearances; had 16 Conference Coaches of the Year; 10 Conference Players of the Year; 1 O Confe rence Fres hman of the Yea r; 3 WCC Schola r Athletes of th e Year; and 18 NCAA A ll-Amer ica ns. Zuzana Lesenarova, a two-time NCAA Al l– Amer ica n for women 's tennis, already has won the first two legs of the Col legiate Grand Slam this fa ll with wins at the Clay Courts and Rivi era All-America n.
