KYLE SMITH 6th Year Ky le Smith begins his sixth yea r at the University of San D iego, and his fourth as a fu ll-time assistant. He is top ass istant to head coach Brad Holland, and bes ides ass isting w ith all aspec ts of the basketba ll program, he is also directly involved w ith the USO Boys Basket– ba ll Camp. A graduate student in the USO Education Department, Kyl e is working towards a Master's degree in Educational Leadership . The 28-year-old Smith is a 1992 graduate of Hami lton Co llege where he ea rned a degree in Engli sh and minor in Soc iology. A fou r-year bas·ketbal l performer on Ham ilton's team, Sm ith helped lead hi s 1990-91 squad to a 26-1 season (2 4-0 regul ar season fini sh) and #1 nationa l ranki ng among NCAA D ivision Ill teams. As a starting po in t gua rd, he aveFaged 10.0 ppg and led the team in ass ists, stea ls, free throw percentage and three-point accuracy. A native of Houston, Texas, Sm ith prepped at Alief Hastings H igh School (1988 graduate).

TERRY BOESEL ~ ~ 1st Year Terry Boesel is in hi s first yea r as assistant men's basketba ll coac h at the Univers ity of San Diego. The 36-yea r-o ld Boesel comes to USO from the Uni versity of La Vern e where he was head coach the past three seasons (1995- 1998). Thi s past season he d irected his squad to an 18-7 overa ll mark and th ird place finish (10-4) in the Southern Ca li fornia Inter– collegiate Athl etic Conference. His squad was also ranked in the NCAA D ivision Ill West Region the last five weeks of the season. Prior to La Verne he was top ass istant basketba ll coach at Chapman Un iversity for three seasons (1992-95); was an admin istrative assistant for UCLA basketba ll fo r one season (1991-92 ); and was ass ista nt at Amherst Co ll ege for one season (1990-91 ). A 1986 graduate of Oregon State Univers ity, Terry earned his B.S. degree in Excercise Physiology. He was a two-year performer on the OSU footba ll team as a defensive back. He went on to earn hi s Master of Science degree in Sport Management in 1991 from the Uni versity of Massachusetts. Terry and his wi fe, Joan, res ide in Yorba Linda with their two chi ldren, Brittany (5) and Mackenzie (6 months).

David Fizdale returns to coach Brad Ho ll and's staff as the re– stricted ea rnings ass istant coac h. Fi zda le was a student assistant for the first half of the 1996-97 season whi le he comp leted his degree in Communications. After graduation he worked fo r the Mi ami Heat of the National Basketball Association as the assistant video coo rdin ator. No stranger to USO basketball , Fizdal e was a four-year player for the Toreros between 1992-96. A two-year capta in and team Most Va luab le Player his sen ior yea r, Fizdale was selected First Team Al l-West Coast Conference after lead ing the West Coast Conference in assists at 7.0 per contest. He set a new USO single season record for assists with 195 and also set a new USO ca reer mark w ith 465. In addition to be ing the team MVP, he was also a two-time rec ipient of the Bugelli Leadershi p Award, and was selected the San Diego Hall of Champions Amateur Star of the Month (February, 1996). He finished hi s USO ca reer w ith 73 starts in 93 games and scored 745 points (8.0 points per game average).

Terry Rya n, in hi s first sea– son as admini st rative ass istant, brings a wea lth of coaching experi– ence and knowledge to the Torero staff this season. Over the past ten years he has been a head coach and assistant at four different programs. He spent

the past three seasons (1995-98) at Col lege of Lake County JC, the last two as head coac h; he spent two years (1993-95) as ass ista nt at Montgomery JC in Maryland with the '93-94 team advanc ing to the JUCO Final Four; he was head coach for two years (1991-93) at Ocean County Col lege in Toms River, New Jersey -- his '92 -93 cl ub fini shed 9th in the nation; and his first three years of coac hing experi ence came at Marymount Uni– vers ity (NCAA Division Ill ) as an ass istant between 1988-9 1. The 34-year-o ld Ryan ea rned his B.A. degree in Eco– nom ics at John Hopkins Un iversity (Ba ltimore, MD) in 1986. He went on to ea rn his M.B.A. from Marymount Un iversity in 1990. Terry and hi s wife, Megan, have two ch il dren, Ca itlin (8) and Timmy (6), and are expecting a third child in February .
