February 2026 Newsletter Chebeague Transportation Company
Ice, Ice, Safety! The past couple of months have been especially slippery. The parking lots at Cousins Island and Route One can become icy, and while SKB Contracting does an excellent job plowing, sanding, and managing snowbanks, winter conditions can still be challenging. A few reminders to help everyone travel safely: Layers: Conditions can change quickly on land and water—warm clothing is always a good idea. Footwear: Boots with good traction help keep you steady. Many passengers bring a change of shoes for the car. Ice Cleats: A real game changer. Having an extra pair on hand can be helpful; they’re available at places like Reny’s and Amazon. Car Accessories: A shovel and ice scraper are winter essentials. Quick tip: a plastic gift card can help remove frost in a pinch. Please plan to arrive a little early and allow extra time when conditions are slick, especially on ramps and floats where tides are constantly changing.
The Islander in the Big City The Islander recently spent some time in Boston while chartered by Outward Bound, a fellow nonprofit that helps young people build character and teamwork skills through outdoor experiences. This charter helped generate additional revenue that supports CTC’s goal of keeping transportation costs as low as possible for the Chebeague community, while also allowing Outward Bound to continue their programs while their own vessel was in the shipyard. We were pleased to support their mission in this way.
Planes, trains and ferries Thank you Tracy for taking a picture of the Islander in Boston, from an airplane!
Please Don’t Feed Russell (or His Squirrel Friends) Feeding wildlife can unintentionally cause problems—from squirrels finding their way into the parking office to Russell the raccoon getting stuck in dumpsters or buildings. For everyone’s safety (including the animals’), please avoid feeding wildlife and remember to close dumpster lids and doors behind you.
Boarding the Ferry To keep things running smoothly and safely, please wait for the deckhand’s announcement before boarding . The crew has important work to complete between trips, and Coast Guard regulations require both crew members to be present before passengers board. We appreciate your patience and cooperation.
Updated CTC Office Hours Monday, Tuesday, Thursday: 9am–3:30pm Wednesday: 9am–12:30pm (Closed Fridays)
