Olympic medalist and member of the famous Australian Mean Machine swim relay team. Upstairs on The 2 nd Floor, we welcome Arjen, our new Restaurant Manager. A Dutch who has called Singapore home for the past 19 years, Arjen joins us from the Montreaux Jazz Club at the Pan Pacific Hotel. He is a seasoned restaurant manager and wine connoisseur with an eye for improving service and incorporating great new ideas for The 2 nd Floor. While many of you kick back and relax into the lazy days of summer, the Management, redevelopment committees and construction teams will be working hard to tackle some of the thornier issues that have surfaced during the redevelopment. We will be working to enhance the pool deck space – Management is currently reviewing alternative fabrics for the retractable awning to rain- proof the Grillhouse dining area. Once that is sorted, the removable planters can be moved. A solution has also been designed to tackle the rainwater drainage issues and the contractors are set to make those fixes. Our recently formed Pool Area Working Group will be meeting to brainstorm both short- and long-term solutions to further enhance the area. Know that the General Committee and I are fully committed to making this a Club you can be proud of. We will continue to work on the areas under construction, including the Lobby and all-day dining (previously Eagle’s Nest), the latter of which will emerge with a new look, concept and name later this year. We will be fine-tuning the Central and Grillhouse menus and operations until we reach the level of service that we at The American Club are known for. If you‘ve not had a meal at Grillhouse yet, I would highly encourage you to do so – the food is spectacular. Chefs Mailk, Paul and Michael and the Grillhouse kitchen team have truly outdone themselves. The smoked beef brisket, mean green protein salad, fish tacos and bite-size mac and cheese balls are already favorites with my family.

FROM THE President

Dear Members,

The moment I hit “send”, an e-version of this message will be disseminated to phones and desktops across the globe, where many of you are enjoying your holidays or home leave in the company of loved ones. Safe travels to all on hiatus from Singapore. For those of you who stayed behind, and are perhaps reading this in print, there’s also joy to be had. Tennis courts and dining reservations will be easier to book, and coffee lines will be pleasantly short. Summer is, indeed, a welcome respite for all. As I imagine the number of countries this message will travel to, I’m reminded of just how large and diverse we are as a club. I’m proud that The American Club has a dedicated and passionate membership that generates a groundswell of ideas and suggestions. We make an earnest attempt to hear all Members, listen to their suggestions and complaints, and take action where we can. Indeed, we acknowledge that the redevelopment has been a challenging period. As we open new facilities, Members have come up with ideas for modifications, and we are taking all input into consideration to ensure that The Club will meet everyone’s needs. The Club, of course, represents different things to different Members, and it’s important we acknowledge that by respecting everyone’s views. This is a core tenet of our club culture, and is also stressed in our by-laws – which calls for Members to “at all times (be) courteous and respectful of the rights of other members and families to enjoy The Club and (to be) respectful of the dignity of staff members.” We appreciate your patience and understanding during the redevelopment and ask that you continue to provide your inputs while respecting fellow Members and our staff. Speaking of the staff, our annual Staff Dinner and Dance will take place on July 30. The Club will be closing early to give our team members time to get ready for this special night of bonding. They deserve it. Many of them have spent the past months in different roles and learning new skills as outlets closed and new ones opened. Their willingness to learn, adapt and continue to serve all of us with a smile is admirable. Some of you may have noticed a few new faces around The Club. Please join me in welcoming Greg Fasala, our new Aquatics Manager & Head Coach, who brings a wealth of experience to the Aquatics program having coached for 35 years. A native Australian, Greg is a former

We’re working as hard as possible to make this a great club for everyone – Members, management and staff – and our commitment to that hasn’t wavered. We’re in this together, and we appreciate your support, ideas and commitment to positive change in the months ahead.

Have a great summer everyone!

Kristen

THE AMERICAN CLUB JUL / AUG 2018

FROM THE General Manager

Dear Members,

During this time of redevelopment, when there’s noise and dust, and parts of the new clubhouse just aren’t yet working the way we expected them to, it’s easy for us to focus attention on the “hardware”. Please, though, keep in mind that The Club isn’t just a building or collection of spaces. It’s the people working in it who make it a truly special place. Whatever frustrations our Members may encounter, know that our team members are doing their level best to keep operations running smoothly in spite of the many difficulties of working in what is basically still a construction zone. They’ve been sent to work offsite at locations like the Bukit Merah pool, had to contend with switching job roles or outlets, deal with the inconvenience and noise of demolition, and then confront the challenges of operating in temporary, unfamiliar, or new spaces. While it has been trying to keep The Club open as it is being rebuilt, a real benefit of this has been our ability to retain a very high-quality group of people who work day in and out to know and serve our Members’ needs. Singapore presents a very difficult labor market, with virtually no unemployment and a bias against hiring foreigners, so The Club’s ability to provide a thriving workplace is a big key to its success. So when the frustrations of hoardings, temporary locker rooms, closed facilities, and flooded walkways get you down, do remember that there are close to 300 people working to the best of their abilities to greet Members with a smile, work through the difficulties, serve our Members’ needs, and ultimately create a space that provides more than just a set of services and facilities, but a real community.

Summer is a slow time of year at The Club. Many of our Members make extended trips back to the US or Canada to visit family and friends, or simply to see the sights and renew their acquaintance with “home”. During June both local and international schools are in recess, making it a great time for the entire family to get away, perhaps to somewhere new, or to revisit favorite places. Sadly, summer is also when expats tend to relocate either because it is prior to the start of a new school year, or due to myriad other reasons that make these months opportune to take on a new role, or even retire and resettle into a new home. In fact, the General Committee will be losing three of its stalwart members this year as circumstances lead them to relocate after long stints in Singapore. Summer is also when The Club’s staff get to recharge their batteries. June 18 was Staff Fun Day – which took on an “Amazing Race”-style competition at Sentosa complete with team names, banners and lots of prizes. Our Members have generously made it possible for every one of our staff to participate in this special event by allowing the clubhouse to be closed for the day – thank you for your support. Later on July 30, our staff gala dinner and awards presentation takes place. This year it will be held on New York Street at Universal Studios, and several of our team members will be recognized for making outstanding service contributions to The American Club. Among the event’s highlights will also be the presentation of long service awards (the list includes one staff who has been with The Club for an incredible 50 years – well done Betty! Read about her on page 28.) This group of individuals has shown extraordinary dedication to The Club, and if you’ve been long-time Members, as my family has been, then they have watched your little ones grow up – from taking swimming and dance lessons and going to camp, to perhaps having a beer at the Union Bar now.

JUL / AUG 2018 THE AMERICAN CLUB

FROM THE General Committee

Dear fellow Members,

Thank you for your continued support during our Club’s redevelopment. As we started moving into new facilities and giving up some beloved old ones, there has been much talk about what everyone likes, and what people feel could be better. After listening to Members’ feedback, we realize that the pool deck area has fallen short of some expectations. We are sorry for the frustration this has caused, and want you to know that we are committed to ensuring that The Club remains one that our Members are proud of and enjoy using. We are taking steps to address your concerns going forward, and would like to give you a high-level overview of where we are in the project. Part of The American Club’s philosophy is to be responsive to Member feedback. Although we have now entered the most challenging phase of the redevelopment, we stand by that commitment. That means listening to your suggestions and acting quickly where possible. Because we are in an active construction zone, we cannot trigger all changes immediately; however, we are listening in earnest and determining what can be done, when, and at what cost. To help us do this, we are re-forming the House Committee. This committee was dormant during the redevelopment period as other committees (initially the Design Review Committee and subsequently, the Project Stakeholder Group (PSG)) handled this committee’s functions as part of the redevelopment process. Now that our new spaces are opening, the House Committee will begin working with Members to identify and act on improvement ideas. While House focuses on the facilities that are operational, the Project Control Group (PCG) is charged with overseeing the remainder of construction. Feedback indicates that Members are particularly interested in improving the pool area. To facilitate this, the General Committee (GC) recently established the Pool Area Working Group (PAWG) which will work under the House committee. The PAWG will identify short- and mid- term opportunities to enhance the pool, the deck, and surrounding areas. Members have already participated in a brainstorming session, and the PAWG will take these ideas forward and scope the solutions. These solutions will be raised through the committee structure for action – we will keep you posted on progress and on opportunities to provide further input as the PAWG moves forward.

In the meantime, the GC and Management have taken inputs from the PAWG, PSG and PCG to plan some immediate short-term improvements. These include: • Removing some of the wooden planters on the pool deck to open up the space • Improving the deck awning to allow for more rain coverage and drainage • Enhancing Member experience around the clubhouse (e.g. pool movie nights and other events) To keep you up-to-date on these and other developments, we will increase communication and share floor plans, design features and videos of the construction site. Most recently, Members provided inputs on the gym design, and some changes have been made based on their feedback. Communication on the gym went out recently, and we will update you on The Union Bar and the Youth area in the coming weeks. Please keep in mind that we are an active construction site. The Club has made contractual agreements with multiple partners to complete this project, and our redevelopment budget is fully committed. We are in the final phase of the project and are not able to halt or delay the project now without incurring additional cost and loss of revenue. If Members and committees raise ideas that require additional investment, these will need to be brought to our membership for approval. Despite the challenges of redevelopment, as of April 2018, The Club has maintained a membership level of 3,318 (+28% compared to the original financial model) and reserves of $58M (+18% compared to the original financial model). Additionally, the open market price for a transferable membership is at a record high of $150,500. A lot will happen at The Club in the next 6 – 12 months. We will see multiple new outlets come on line, and we will be making enhancements to our new facilities. All redevelopment projects require a settling in period where modifications and refinements are made. We hope that you will provide input during this period and, where your schedule permits, volunteer time to be involved.

FINTECH FORUM & THE ENTREPRENEURS SERIES

Our regular information and networking events The Entrepreneurs Series and FinTech Forum have gained good traction within our community since launching in January 2017. Over 12 sessions, we’ve met up close and personal with inspirational risk-takers and trend-setters, and gained insights on topics including startup challenges, digital, marketing and service innovation, data analytics, crypto- currency, blockchain and financial technology. To keep our momentum going, we would like to form a Member group to contribute towards the programming and line-up of guest speakers for the coming year. This will entail 2 meetings over two months. If you have the interest and/or network, we invite you to join us via events@amclub.org.sg. 3D LATTE ART

If latte art is hard, 3D latte art is a feat! In collaboration with Chock Full of Beans, Members were invited to 2 complimentary 3D Latte Art sessions at The Club in May and June, where three-dimensional foam bears, cats, dogs and even a unicorn worked up a visual treat as basic latte art skills were imparted.

POOL OPENING & MOTHER’S DAY CELEBRATION There were indeed plenty of reasons to celebrate as our new pools launched in tandem with Mother’s Day celebration at The Club on May 13! Members were treated to free Prosecco, cookies, chocolate, and a fun photobooth that made this celebratory day extra special. Thank you to all who took part in our photo contest and congratulations to our 5 winners!

GRILLHOUSE LAUNCH Built on the concept of casual, poolside barbeque for families and friends, our new Grillhouse restaurant made its anticipated debut on June 4. Chefs Malik, Paul and Michael flew to Texas last year to learn authentic barbeque techniques, and these valuable skills were conveyed to our Grillhouse chefs who carefully conceived the outlet’s new menu, brimming with delicious creations. With several new faces on board, our team also underwent extensive service and operational training in time for the launch, which saw Members sampling smokey barbeque goodness while kids had splashing fun in the pools. What a great way to kickstart the summer season!

We receive hundreds of valuable feedback from our Members each month. Positive or constructive, your comments are important in helping us assess our services and offerings, and enable us to identify ways to Rant Rave &

better meet your needs. Read on for a selection of our most recent

Member feedback.

I frequent the spa and have many concerns over inability to get appointments and confusion over the bookings. Please look into it.

Thank you for your feedback and we are sorry to hear of your unsatisfactory experience. To ensure our spa maintains a high level of customer service, our reception team strives to provide their undivided attention to every Member who visits. This process inevitably leads to occasional missed calls when Members phone in to book an appointment. If you are unable to reach our team on the phone, you can make your reservations via our 24/7 online booking system (http://amclub.org.sg) to get your preferred slots.

I want to thank the Youth team for doing a great job in coordinating my daughter’s birthday party this morning. They were so easy to work with, very professional and efficient. The planning process was so easy for me, especially since I couldn’t do much having given birth only 2 weeks ago. Special shout out to Youth Assistant Manager Venice and the host Asraf! The rest of the team who were present during the party also made sure it was a success! The kids had fun and so did the adults.

We’re so happy that we managed to make your child’s birthday party a memorable one! Did you know that with our pools now open again, we can also organize poolside parties at The Club? Kids can expect lots of fun water play complete with inflatables and pool games, nibbles and a beautiful birthday cake. Get in touch with our Youth Party team at youthparty@amclub.org.sg.

We want to hear from you! Email your feedback to info@amclub.org.sg. Your comments may be published in subsequent issues of our magazine.

With this milestone transformation, the birth of new outlet concepts and a revitalized direction for The Club, we are excited to announce that our Club logo will also be undergoing its own refresh.

REDEVELOPMENT UPDATES

GYM TOWN HALL

As you may know, we held a gym-focused town hall a few weeks ago to review the gym design and to share with Members the issues that were found as part of the structural investigations. We'd like to share with you the information and outcomes from that town hall.

GENERAL GYM INFORMAT ION

The gym design was created together with the input of gym focus groups, the Gym Subcommittee, management, Member volunteers, the architects, and the interior design team who have had experience designing the Pure Fitness and Fitness Republic gyms. Based on the feedback received over many months, the following priorities were set for the new gym, forming the basis for the gym design.

STRUCTURAL ISSUES

Three key issues were found as part of the structural investigations.

The structural floor in the gym is uneven.

1

There is a structural wall that separates the old changing rooms from where the sports desk used to be that cannot be removed.

2

There is an “h-shaped” structural element in what used to be the cardio area that cannot be removed.

3

11

THE AMERICAN CLUB JUL / AUG 2018

FINAL

GYM DESIGN

The architectural team as well as the Gym subcommittee were able to work around these issues to create the new gym design. The following is the gym design that has been approved and will be built. (The red marks denote structural elements that cannot be moved)

The following is a list of the Member raised issues from the gym-focused town hall in no particular order. SALIENT POINTS FROM THE TOWN HALL

The new gym should be all on one level. This has been achieved; there are internal ramps in the space for handicapped access.

1

12

JUL / AUG 2018 THE AMERICAN CLUB

The following is a list of the Member raised issues from the gym-focused town hall in no particular order. SALIENT POINTS FROM THE TOWN HALL (CON’T)

The Club should hire a gym specialist to design the gym. Aedas ID, our interior design contractor, has designed the Pure Fitness and Fitness Republic gyms.

The studio storage area should have a door that retracts more. This has been achieved and reviewed by one of our fitness class instructors to ensure it meets the needs of the classes.

2

3

The female changing rooms should be less "boxy" and have fewer internal walls. There should be more open spaces. Based on feedback from the town hall, the designers have relaid out the female changing area to be more open with two benches for seating, a communal "clothes hanger" area for hanging dresses/pants, and two private changing areas. The vanity area is now a long counter with space for 5 hairdryer/makeup spots. The prior "cubicles" have been removed.

4

The location of the studio and cardio areas should be flipped. The studio and cardio areas were positioned intentionally, as there has been a significant callout for natural light and windows in the gym. By swapping the location of these two components, the natural light would be confined to a closed studio and not be enjoyed by everyone. In addition, there is a small space outside of the studio that allows people to wait for classes to begin. The below graphic shows the expanded windows in the cardio area that will help us maximize natural light. (The structural "h" that cannot be removed is on the left of the image. Note that the ceiling in this area is solid.)

5

The men's locker room should have 5 showers. This has been achieved.

There should be a Jacuzzi in the gym. As shared previously, a Jacuzzi was not incorporated into the gym design as new regulations require separate male and female Jacuzzis. Through prior feedback, Members prioritized steam rooms for both men and women instead. Space has been future- pr oofed on t he second f l oo r of Grillhouse restaurant to add a Jacuzzi if this is identified as a need by membership in the future; however, it is currently designated for F&B space. Management will monitor this callout going forward.

7

6

13

THE AMERICAN CLUB JUL / AUG 2018

The cardio and weights areas feel "divided" from each other. There is a structural wall between these two areas that cannot be removed. Please refer to the plan below; the walls (lines in red) are immovable structural walls. We are working with the structural engineers to maximize the opening between the cardio and gym fitness areas to make it as open as possible. (The two red dashes on the right are the structural "h" that cannot be removed from the cardio area.)

The Member callout for shower sizing has been incorporated into the design. The shower stalls in the new gym are larger than the old gym shower stalls.

8

10

Will we have the same equipment in the gym. You can get a list at the Gym counter. In addition, The Club is ordering a new gym rack system that will allow TRX as well as other functional training. 9
