mark, next to which is situ a­ ted the National Bank (Chap­ ter 8). Holmens K anal ends of llolmens Kirke (Chapter 9) and a bridge leads from here to Slotsholmen. Here we tu rn back and con­ tinue our way past the monu­ mental building of The East- Asiatic Company on the cor­ ner of Holbergsgade and Niels Juelsgade. Holbergsgade is the main thoroughfare of the Gammel- liolm quarter and ends at Ny- liavn. This quarter consists of a number of straig h t and somewhat tedious looking streets, chiefly containing dwelling-houses.

Holmens Kanal runs in a curve around the old quarter of Holmensgade, which mainly consists of old buildings and soon, it is to be hoped, will be replaced by a'm odern quarter, as lias been the case with the old streets on the other side of 0stergade, now the modern C ity-quarter. Passing Vingaardsstrsede, the first, building is Handels- banken (see Chapter 8) and a little further the line pro­ perty of Landmandsbanken (Chapter 8). In front of the last mentioned bank is the Statue of Niels duel (sculptor Th. Stein) and opposite, on the corner of Niels Juelsgade the Hotel Kongcn af Dan­
