The avenue was planted in 1700—1703 at the same time as the Frederiksberg pa­ lace was built and for a long time was the private drive­ way of the K ing, closed at Yesterbrogade by an iron gate, which was only removed in 1802. The avenue is still a beautiful drive and promena­ de, very much used during the summer. R ight to the left in the avenue are the buildings of the Set. Andreas Order and of the Salvation Army. F u r­ ther out is the Betty Nansen Theatre situated, and a t the end of the avenue, forming a roundel, are Frederilcsherg Church, to the left (see Chap­ ter 9), and Phonix Theatret to the rig h t (see Chapter 13).

Gamle KGngevej is parallel with Frederiksberg A116. I t begins a t Axeltorv and conti­ nues to Allegade (see Route 8). H aving passed the viaduct, the Set. dorgens So (lake) is to the right next to the pumps of the water-works. On both sides of the lake, elevated above the street, promenades lead to Gyldenlovesgade (sec Route 0). The promenade on the loft side is called Svineryggen (hogs back), and from here is a beautiful view of the ma­ ny fine towers of the city. To the left is seen, in Ste- nosgade, the catholic Jesu lljccrtc Kirke and on the cor­ ner of Vodroffsvej Kinoiwlceet (moving picture theatre) (see Chapter 13). A little further out is the
