The lied in 1875 by the brewer J. C. Jacobsen, forming the s ta r­ ting point for the Carlsberg Foundation (see above), in­ stituted in 1876 and being the Department A. of the Founda­ tion. The board of directors consists of three n atural scien­ tists of the management of the Foundation and one or two membres, versed in the science of brewing. The founder of the Carls­ berg Laboratory lias plainly stated his intention with the object and ways of working of the laboratory by sa y in g : »No theoretical or practical result of work of the in sti­ tution must be kept seeret«.
