Botanical Garden (Route 4) belonging to the University of Copenhagen, was laid out in 1871—74 on the ground of the old demolished walls and for tifications and covers 10 hec- atres. The very beautiful and interesting garden is laid out systematically, bu t this, in the meantime, has not pu t any stamp of tediousness on the park, which on the contrary is of an ex traordi nary beautiful landscape-ef fect. The background towards the North is formed by the monumental conservatories, to a p a rt of which there is ad mission for the public (The Palm-house and the Aqua rium ) . In the Palm-house are seve ral tropical palms, many of which have the tru n k s com-

selling outside Scandinavia, and this surplus then, accor ding to the regulations, is used for scientific researches and for the benefit of patients in Scandinavia, suffering from diabetes. By the treatm ent with insu- line it is possible to uphold the working ability of for merly seriously suitering pa tients and thereby keep them as useful members of the so ciety, which for this of course is of the greatest economic importance. The Northern I 11 - suline Laboratory (Nordisk Insulinlaboratorium ) is foun ded by professor August Krogh (Nobel Prize 1920), the chemist A. Kongsted and Dr. med. H. C. Hagedorn, the last mentioned being the di rector of the laboratory.
