LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

Fall is one of our favorite times of the year. We begin to see the fruits of all our labors from the Spring and Summer starting to pay off at our deer leases. The heat of Summer is slowly fading away. Cooler temperatures are now lead- ing to the big schools of bull reds showing up and the bass starting to bite shallow again. Since early September, we’ve covered a lot of ground. Bow hunts in Kentucky, muzzleloader hunts in Kansas and handgun hunts in Texas along with a mix of other hunts elsewhere are already in the books. We’ve also been to several great fishing events as we wrapped up the 2019 National Walleye Tour Championship at Devils Lake, North Dakota as well as the IFA Redfish Tour Championships over in Louisiana. On the college fishing front, the 2019- 20 season is well underway with events on Kentucky Lake already completed and one just ahead on Lake Dardanelle. WHEW and Fall is just now kicking off! Still ahead are sev- eral great trips with friends and partners as we head into the field, as well as catch some awesome fishing, too. This E-Magazine is loaded with lots of exciting new prod- ucts from some of the best in the industry – I hope you enjoy this edition as much as we’ve enjoyed putting every- thing to the test!

GARMIN® INTRODUCES THEIR NEW INSTINCT WATCH FOR THE RUGGED OUTDOORS THAT EVERY OUTDOORSMANWILL WANT

Garmin recently announced the Instinct Tactical Edition , a rugged, outdoor GPS smartwatch with tactical function- ality. Building on the proven reliability of the Instinct se- ries, the Instinct Tactical Edition adds enhanced features of Garmin’s tactix® series including night-vision compat- ibility mode, Jumpmaster, dual-position GPS formatting, preloaded tactical activity, and waypoint projection. The Instinct Tactical Edition also includes a new stealth mode for off-grid functionality. “The Instinct series has quickly proven itself to be the watch for individuals who need a piece of equipment as tough as the conditions they face,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice-president of global consumer sales. “Incorporating tactical features from the Garmin tactix series, the Instinct Tactical Edition combines the best of both product lines to provide tactical and multisport features for people who spend their time outdoors and demand a watch they can depend on in even the most challenging terrains.” Packed with features for navigation and training, the In- stinct Tactical Edition includes multiple features specific to tactical operations including Jumpmaster and tactical preloaded activities, projected waypoints, dual-position GPS formatting, and night-vision compatibility. For

airborne operations, use Jumpmaster for three jump types: HAHO, HALO, and Static. Set the watch to dual-positioning mode, and the watch will simultaneously display two sets of coordinate systems, such as MGRS and latitude/longi- tude, on a single data screen. When night vision mode is activated, the backlight settings of the screen will reduce to a level that won’t interfere with the function of night vi- sion goggles. Enabling stealth mode prevents storage and sharing of GPS position and disables wireless comms. When oper- ating in stealth mode, GPS location position is visible on device; however, locations are not saved to device memory or shared.

This allows for training functionality in areas with location security concerns without revealing the location in the event a device is physically captured or if the recorded ac- tivities are shared. Stealth mode also quickly disables all wireless communication to and from the device. The Instinct Tactical Edition is constructed to military standards (MIL-STD-810G) for thermal, shock and water resistance (rated to 100 meters) with a fiber-reinforced polymer case. It’s built with a chemically strengthened and scratch-resistant display that’s easy-to-read, especially in direct sunlight. Plus, the fully vented silicone bands in- clude two independent, removable keeper loops to ensure a secure fit. While in the field, feel confident exploring new paths thanks to the Instinct Tactical, which features multiple GNSS satellite networks to help track a user’s location in more challenging environments than with just GPS alone. Before venturing out, use the Garmin Explore™ app to plan the trip in advance and when it’s time to head back to camp, the TracBack® feature on the watch can navigate the same route back to the original starting point. Whether camping, training or in day-to-day activities, the Instinct Tactical Edition keeps track of heart rate, steps taken, distance traveled, calories burned and more1. Hik- ing, running, biking, swimming, kayaking, and skiing are just a few of the activities supported on the device. When paired with a compatible smartphone, Instinct Tactical Edition users can leave their phone packed away and pro- tected while they receive smart notifications like texts, emails, and other alerts right on the wrist. The Instinct Tactical Edition is also compatible with other Garmin de- vices including inReach Mini and dog devices . The Instinct Tactical Edition features a battery life of up to 14 days in smartwatch mode, up to 16 hours in GPS mode, and up to 40 hours in UltraTrac™ battery saver mode. The Instinct Tactical Edition is the latest solution from Garmin’s expanding outdoor segment, which focuses on developing technologies and innovations to enhance users’ outdoor experiences. Whether hiking, hunting, trail running, mountain biking, golfing, diving or training dogs, Garmin outdoor devices are essential tools for out- door enthusiasts of all levels. For more information about Garmin’s other outdoor products and services, click here .

When you’re ready to train, we’ve got you covered with preloaded activity profiles for running, biking, swimming and more.

Take the guesswork out of your return journey by using the TracBack feature to navigate the same route back to start.

CHECK OUT THE PODCASTS FROM THE LATEST EVENTS! On this episode of the Rapala #WeAreCollegiateBass Pod- cast we talk to Fletcher Nutt and Dustin Reid from Arkan- sas Tech University. They won a recent FLW College Fish- ing event on the Arkansas River. The event took plac out of Little Rock, and anglers took to the Arkansas River to see who could catch the five best bass. Nutt and Reid weighed in five fish for 15 pounds 2 ounces. That total bested sec- ond place by roughly two and a half pounds. While we have these two Arkansas Tech University anglers on the phone, we take a minute to talk with them about the upcoming AF- TCO Collegiate Bass Open. The event will be held on Lake Dardanelle from October 26-27, 2019. ATU is located in Russellville, AR which is near the host site at Lake Darda- nelle. Tune in to hear what these anglers have to say on the latest episode!

The School of the Year standings are set as we enter our first event of the season at Kentucky Lake. Adrian College holds a firm grip on that first place spot. For today’s show we will be talking with anglers from the leading school. They are also preparing to compete in the Bass Pro Shops Big Bass Bash presented by Berkley this weekend. Hear what they have to say about that event and the School of the Year Race.

On this episode of the Rapala #WeAreCollegiateBass Pod- cast, we will be talking with Hunter Schneider from Adrian College. Hunter took home Overall Big Bass honors at the first ACA event of the season with 5.16 pounds. Tune in to hear him talk about that fish catch, and all of the great priz- es he took home. At the start of this episode we will also introduce the top 10 in the most recent update to the Bass Pro Shops School of the Year presented by Abu Garcia. And at the end of this episode, listen to win a Rapala prize pack- age giveaway!

BIG BASS BASH PRESENTED BY

SCHNEIDER TAKES BIG BASS HONORS The Association of Collegiate Anglers held their first event of the 2019-2020 season on the Bass Pro Shops Colle- giate Bass Fishing Series. College anglers from all over the nation competed for two days on Kentucky Lake in the Bass Pro Shops Big Bass Bash presented by Berkley. This Big Bass format event creates an exciting and fast paced tournament setting with four fishing sessions two hours in length, occurring each day. For Adrian College angler Hunter Schneider it was during Day 2 Session 2 presented by Solar Bat that proved to be a memorable one. Hunter, a member of the number 1 ranked Adrian College team, hooked into a largemouth bass weigh- ing 5.16 pounds to claim Overall Big Bass honors. For Overall Big Bass winner Hunter Schneider, his bait of choice was the Berkley Power Swimmer. “Can’t be any more excited you know. I was fortunate enough to get bit on a Berkley Power Swimmer. I just can’t be any more hap- py,” the Adrian College senior stated. Leading up to the event, members of the Adrian College Fishing Team got together and made up a list of various Berkley baits they would like to have for the event. After looking at the products and sizing up the lake condi- tions, Schneider had his eye on the Power Swimmer. “We saw the Berkley swimmer, and we just got like a $1,000 order in last week. We’ve been testing them out, and we came out here to Kentucky Lake and figured those swim- baits would work. They’re chasing shad right now, so it panned out for us,” added Schneider. The Berkley Power Swimmer was one of four products to be featured in The Bash Stash, an online series put together by the ACA that provided an in-depth look at key baits for the Big Bass Bash on Kentucky Lake.

Hunter Schneider from Adrian College holds up his prizes from Day 2 Session 2

When Schneider came to the stage during Session 2 of Day 2, one could tell that he was very excited about the fish he was weighing in. After hearing him tell the story of how he caught the fish, it’s easy to see why he was so pumped up. “I sat into that fish and I was like, ‘Oh boys, if this isn’t a carp…it’s a big one.’ And. Blake’s like, ‘Oh my gosh this is a big one.’ And it comes to the back of the boat and jumps like six foot in the air. Then Blake went and jabbed for it and it dug under the boat. We were all freaking out thinking it was going to break off,” he explained. After struggling to get it into the net on the first attempt, the team of Adrian anglers finally wrestled the five pounder into the boat. “We finally got it in the net. And when it got in the boat, we all just looked at each other and we were like, ‘We just won the tournament. We did what we came here to do.’ I just started tearing up. I’ll never forget it until the day I die,” added Schneider.

The win by Schneider also goes a long way towards Adri- an College’s chase for the Bass Pro Shops School of the Year presented by Abu Garcia. That first-place finish earns Adrian College 1,000 points that will add to their first place leading total. Hunter says that the team’s results at Ken- tucky Lake last week demonstrate the drive and determi- nation this team has. “It just says a lot about program. We were 1,500 points ahead or so before this tournament. We’re not letting off the gas, we’re just getting started,” he said. Staff members are currently working on tallying up School of the Year points from the most recent events. The current updated standings will be released later this week. Making the right decisions on fishing location and bait selection helped Schneider to fulfill a lifelong dream. “This is what I’ve been dreaming of since I was 12 years old you know, since I first casted a bait caster…is being up on a big stage and being able to win a tournament, or win something big,” he said. The college senior went out and claimed Day 2 Session 2 with 5.16 pounds. The victory validates Schneider’s effort and determination to compete at the highest level in college fishing. “I was just able to prove to myself and my family, and everybody that told me I couldn’t do it, I’m here now and I’m living proof. Just one bite and I’m here,” Schneider concluded. BERKLEY BAITS PROVE KEY ON DAY 2

The final day of a major bass fishing tournament is one of the most exhilarating moments of an entire event. Ev- erything is on the line, and the sole goal of each and every angler is to go out and win the whole thing. Day two of the 2019 Bass Pro Shops Big Bass Bash presented by Berkley lived up to that hype. Using only Berkley baits to catch their fish, these college anglers hauled fish after fish across the stage, including the Overall Big Bass of the event. During today’s competition, anglers were permitted to fish with solely Berkley baits. Berkley, a long time sponsor of the ACA and Collegiate Bass Fishing Series, is known for their quality fishing lures and soft plastics. Those Berkley products proved to be a key contributor to anglers who weighed in fish today. Bennet Kudder from 16th ranked Bryan College won Ses- sion 1 presented by Abu Garcia with 4.20 pounds. Entering today with limited expectations, he was not sure that the morning bite would produce a quality fish. “It was a big surprise, I wasn’t really expecting to do well today. Having a good fish early was a surprise,” said Kudder. Following in compliance with the regulations for tourna- ment action on day two of the event, the Bryan College angler caught the session winning fish on a Berkley bait. Bennett was chunking the Berkley Cane Walker to shallow cover when the bass decided to strike.

“We pulled back into a pocket with some rocks in it, and there were some shad there. I threw a Cane Walker, I was reeling the thing in…and it ate my Cane Walker as I was reeling it in,” added Kudder.

Session 1 weights here on the final day resembled those from Session 1 on Day 1. There were a few fish over the four pound mark, numerous fish in the two pound range, and the session was capped off in 10th place with 1.96 pounds. The morning bite out on Kentucky Lake this week proved key. Those anglers that were able to dial in a solid topwater bite left home with a boat load of prizes both yesterday and today.

The second session of Day 2 was the most eventful of the day. Hunter Schneider from 1st place Adrian College weighed in 5.16 pounds to win the session and claim Over- all Big Bass honors. He couldn’t contain his emotions as he talked about the win following weigh-in. “Can’t be anymore excited you know. I was fortunate enough to get bit on a Berkley Power Swimmer. I just can’t be any more happy,” noted Schneider. We will provide a more in-depth look at Schneider’s catch next week when we put together the final overall recap of the 2019 Bass Pro Shops Big Bass Bash presented by Berkley. Here is a look at the complete standings from Day 2 Ses- sion 2 presented by Solar Bat. Similar to Session 1, there were a great deal of two pounders that claimed prizes. And once again, a one pound class fish claimed the 10th and final spot. The top three of this particular session were all awarded a pair of Solar Bat Sunglasses. Also, each angler to place in this session earned an Abu Garcia Ike Series Casting Rod.

Taylor Owens with her 4.79lb bass

Armed with a Berkley topwater bait, Owens had a gut feeling that a big fish just might eat that larger profile lure. “I knew that if I could get one to blow up on a topwater bait it would be pretty big. So I just chose a J-Walker or a Cane Walker, and rotated between them all day,” added Owens. Her intu- ition paid off in the form of a four plus pound largemouth bass. Owens is grateful for that fish, and the opportunity to compete here this week. “We were so excited. That’s the first keeper fish that I’ve caught all week. I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to be here,” she added. The final session ended with a last-minute flurry of anglers rushing to the stage to weigh in their biggest fish. Once the scales closed, this proved to be the best session of the day. It took a minimum of a 3.48 pound fish to place inside the top 10. Bethel University, the 5th place team in School of the Year, freshman Thomas Millraney weighed in with 4.77 pounds to take the top spot. “This is my first college tournament ever. It’s really reward- ing,” said Millraney. With family, friends, and teammates in attendance, Millraney closed out the final session of the week with a first place finish. This was a moment that had been a long time coming for the young angler. “It’s really nice after fishing the same boat docks two days, I fished them Friday too…finally paid off,” he added. At one point today, he was ready to pull up the trolling motor. Yet with one flip of a Berkley bait to the same boat dock he’s fished for two full days, Millraney set into a prize winning fish. This week at Kentucky Lake has been an amazing experi- ence. The best anglers in college fishing conquered a dif- ficult and finicky Kentucky Lake in the fall time to bring in some really nice fish.

Day 2 Session 2 results presented by Solar Bat

At all ACA ran college events, there is always a large crowd of supporters that gather at weigh-in to cheer on these student anglers. In Session 3 presented by Bass Pro Shops and Abu Garcia, that crowd let out the loudest cheer of the event when Taylor Owens from Blue Mountain College came to the stage. She got the crowd ignited with a 4.79 pound Kentucky Lake largemouth. The freshman lady angler was very proud to catch that par- ticular fish. “I’m a freshman, this is my first college tourna- ment. I worked really hard to get here, and I’m really proud of myself,” said Owens. Both Owens, and her fellow Blue Mountain College teammate Ty Cox, struggled to catch a keeper fish all week. That Session 3 winning fish was the first keeper she boated all week.
