HEAD COACH JOHN MARTIN

1987 USO VOLLEYBALL PROSPECTUS The 1987 University of San Diego volleyball team must have some mix– ed emotions about beginning a new season . True, the Toreras are extremely happy to be starting a new year and to be able to put the 1986 season behind them, as USO posted a 0-21 mark last year. But on the other hand , the Toreras will be playing for the first time in four years without Gina Trapletti , the team's top player the last two seasons. Coach John Martin hopes his 13th season with the USO program proves to be a lucky one. And he should have more than luck on his side. USO has five players on the squad with at least two years experience under Martin. They, along with a pair of second-year players, will pro– vide the Toreras with a good , strong nucleus. The team's lone senior is Kris Mitchell , a 5-10 outside hitter who was third in kills on the team last season. Also back on the outside are juniors Jody Conners and Ruth Bajo. The 5-8 Conners was second on the team in kills and digs in 1986. At setter, the Toreras have another pair of juniors in Leisa Hagen and Teresa Myers. Hagen has been the team's top setter the past two seasons and last year finished 11th in the nation in service ace average. In the middle, USO has a pair of second-year performers who were both slowed by injury a year ago. Cindy Silldorff, a 6-0 sophomore, and Gayle Newman, a 6-0 junior who played one season at Scottsdale Com– munity College, should handle a majority of the middle blocking duties if they can stay healthy. Martin also has a trio of freshmen who will see considerable playing time-Kathy Hayes and Suzanne Le Satz, a pair of 6-1 middle blockers, and 5-11 outside hitter Rachel Cormey.

This will be John Martin's 13th sea– son as the head coach at USO. After a pair of disappointing years, Martin hopes to get the Toreras back on the winning track in 1987.

Martin has been head coach at USO since the school began its volleyball program in 1975. Three times Martin-coached teams have advanced into post-season play. In 1976, the team finished fourth at the AIAW Small College Nationals. In 1977 and 1978, Martin coached the squad to fifth-place finishes at the WAIAW Regionals. Under Martin the USO program has grown from NCAA Divi– sion II status to its present Division I level. The Toreras will once again compete in the West Coast Athletic Conference, which last season sent two teams to the NCAA Tournament. John is a graduate of San Diego State University, earning both a B.A. and Master's degree in History. Martin lives in Encinitas along with his wife Jane, daughter Eliza and son Patrick.
